Here's Steve Kyler from Hoopsworld (Florida/Magic guy and not at all a rumor starter)

Will in Orlando:
Whats the latest on the Arenas for Carter trade rumor?

Steve Kyler:
Not likely... from what I hear that call was intiated by Washington trying to get out of Gilbert and Orlando said no.

Just got a call from the Wizards that patched me into this live conference call with EG for season ticket holders. Kinda cool. A question was just asked about Yi and impact on blatche. EG says Yi will have to earn his minutes. EG likes the fact that Yi is going to get some international experinece this summer.

Question about GA playing two-guard. EG says he has discussed with GA and GA "responded very well." EG said Ga is "really looking forward to playing with John" and "not having as much of the ballhandling responsibility."

Question to EG about going after a Boozer or Bosh. Said they are going to "follow what the caps did" building through the draft and youth. Put a core together of "young guys that we can be competitive with for years to come." Wants young guys who can grow together and "save our powder" to get that "one guy" who can put us over the top someday down the road.

Don't overlook the most disturbing thing in that article:
Tony Kornheiser [on ESPN's "free agent summit"]: See, I've got a horse in that race, because now I no longer live in New York, I live in Washington D.C, and Gilbert Arenas will be poisonous for John Wall. So the Wizards must push him somewhere.

Kornhieser is an idiot. He's the same guy who advocated trading Arenas for Iverson numerous times.

WOW!! It's so funny how people can love you and then hate on you so quickly. All of the good things Gil did in DC and people forget so quickly. We ALL makes mistakes and want to be forgiven when we make them. I don't understand because all the good he did really outweigh the bad. I'm going to miss the Gil, who use to throw his jersey out to the crowd after every game. He was approachable and so down to earth. I'm REALLY going to miss those articles in WP about him. Some of the article really had me laughing. That OLD BUZZARD Tony is going to get his one day!! I bet he has alot of skeletons in his closet because the toughest critic usually does! I CAN'T STAND LISTENING TO HIM TALK :(

Kornheiser is an entertainer. If you remember that, you'll appreciate him more. If you insist on thinking of him as an expert in sports, you won't like him very much.

But he's not entertaining. I like my clowns to be funny.

Kornheiser & Wilbon have to be the most clueless sportswriters in the country. Hands down.

I'd also like to add that David Robinson had Dennis Rodman, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, and elite shooters in Chuck Person and Vinny Del Negro when they made it all the way to the conference finals in 1994-95. That team got to the conference finals lost to the Houston Rockets. In all likelihood, Robinson doesn't get a title without Tim Duncan.

Who would you rather have today:

Arenas for 4 yrs, $80M
Joe Johnson for 6 yrs, $119M

I have a feeling that in a few weeks Gil's contract is going to look sane compared to some others out there.

Johnson has never done anything in this league. All he has on Gilbert is a couple inches, he's not near the scorer Gilbert is at all.

He's gotten as far as Gilbert has, and has been to the playoffs as many times.

And just for the record, neither of them come close to being worth the money they're making.

It's an honest question, and I'm not really making an argument either way or saying either of them are "worth it." I'm asking my fellow WizFans which deal they'd rather have today and why.

Nate has posed the question in this thread "would you sign Gil today for 4/$80M. It spawned some good discussion. I'm asking if you had to take one player at the above terms, which would you want and why?

What Gilbert has on him is a pretty frightening injury history. But based on homerism and Johnson's flop last year in the playoffs that totally turned me off to him, I'd still go Gil and his shorter contract.

Some quick numbers for you too:

JJ's career best PER is 19.5, and posted 19.3 last season.

Gil posted a PER close to 19 over his last three troubled years and was well into the low-mid 20's in the preceding 3 seasons. If Gil is healthy, he's the much better player, younger, and on a shorter deal.

I agree. In this climate, somebody might be willing to pay Arenas 4/$80M. I just don't think that somebody is the Washington Wizards. We are not right team, with the right win-now goal, with a the right hole at the PG position.

Ironically, one could argue that Joe Johnson would make more sense on the Wizards roster, and Arenas would make more sense in Atlanta.

It depends on the team.

I think for the Wizards Arenas is the better fit. For a team in complete win-now mode like the Mavs, I think Joe Johnson would make sense. I think for the Hawks ironically Arenas and his contract would be a better fit. They would have an expiring each year for the next 3 years(Crawford, Bibby and Arenas). If they keep Crawford 2011/12, they will have a hard time replacing Bibby at the end of the deal.

Anyone who doesn't say Arenas is nuts, I think. Though his contract isn't any more sane than Johnson's, just shorter. Johnson is pretty much the new Arenas of two years ago.

I don't get it. Who sets the barometer for what player is worth what amount? Surely more than 90% of the players who are paid MAX $$$ don't deserve it. Isn't that more of a problem with the system? I mean, I gather that most of you think only the Top 5 players in the league should get MAX money, and you all seem to think said player should be traded immediately or outright cut (CBA changes permitting) should they incur an injury.

I don't get it. If everybody who gets MAX money is considered overpaid, the only choice a player like Gilbert for instance, has is to turn down the money when it's offered to them and say you know what, I think I'm only worth X amount. Do you really expect that to ever happen?

How is it that every one can be overpaid? If every one is overpaid, isn't that just the average?
