I think Jonothan Simmons is going to get paid like any number of Spurs utility players, and he won't be worth the money when he does because it's much easier for him to do what he does when he has a team around him operating like the Spurs do. The Pistons seem to enjoy paying those kinds of contracts, as they did with Baynes and Boban. Cory Joseph has been alright for the Raptors but not exactly an amazing player or a super bargain or anything, and the Spurs only let him go because they were able to sign Aldridge and couldn't keep his cap hold to keep him restricted.
Simmons wouldn't be a Nicholson level signing or anything, but I doubt he works out brilliantly for any team that picks him up. He turns 28 this offseason, so if you give him 4 years, you're getting him until he's 32. He's the kind of guy teams really should be looking to develop for themselves on the cheap rather paying after they prove themselves. The league is littered with buyers remorse on contracts to those kinds of players in restricted free agency. I don't think he'll come cheap. Too many teams aren't going to have cap space and will have their MLE instead, and that MLE seems a likely place for his contract to fall. No disrespect to what he's done, though, because he's a very good player and absolutely representative of why the Spurs just keep on winning.
