Hmmm good call, Swami. Could be I was trying to recollect Jesus Jones. Probably was, because one of the songs of that band Fish mentioned does have a "Never Enough" vibe. Then again, with my swiss cheese brain there is a better than 50% chance that I meant Ned's Atomic Dustbin (because another song does sound like "Green Cell Grey"); or Toad the Wet Sprocket; or some other 90's alt band I used to listen to, but an aged and previously dormant synapse misfired and threw me into my "Jesus band" repository. All of this is to say, "Good band, Fish." I'll stop muddying up the thread with babble now.

Well thanks. They just added another single to youtube -- ladder 116, about 9/11/. I've heard it 100 times and it gives me chills every time:

Cool tune and nice album art.

I did. I am loving the album very much. Rolling Stone made a big mistake in bashing it so much; I think they just didn't "get it." The album is about looking at the world and realizing that the only way to fix it is to start over, so the music in the album jumps a wide variety of genres (Dance, R&B, Rock, Synthpop, and even Latin American and Middle Eastern Music) with hints of classical influence, all of which lead up to the powerful ending. The last three tracks are a great attempt at orchestral arrangements, especially for a rock group. It isn't Chopin (whom is quoted earlier in the CD) but it is still really, really good.

Here are some highlights in my opinion:

Unnatural Selection:

I Belong To You (which has sections from a French Opera within it):

Yeah, I gotta read the lyrics first, but I'm going to assume it's down to Wolfmother and Vultures for best rock album of the year. Just some killer, killer riffs in here.

^not trying to rub it in (that much) but they're playing at Austin City Limits (ACL) next month and I'll be there and am looking forward to seeing them live.

I've been working on my itinerary for the ACL festival and I've got a bunch of conflicts with bands I want to see that are playing at the same time on stages clear across the venue. I could definitely use some input from all the music moguls on the board (I've listed the artists I'm leaning towards first based on some of the input I've received here as well as my preference/ limited research/ knowledge):

Avett Bros. or Medeski Martin and Wood
Daniel Johnston or Coheed and Cambria
Thievery Corp or John Legend
Mute Math or !!!
Grizzly Bear or The Airborne Toxic Event
Flogging Molly or Citizen Cope
Mos Def or The Levon Helm Band (this is contingent upon the acts directly above - If I choose Citizen Cope then I'll go with Levon Helm band in this slot)
Bon Iver or ...And you will know us by the trail of dead (this is a no contest for me really cuz Bon Iver wins hands down but I would like to catch the other act too...it's just that Bon Iver is one of the reasons I wanted to go to ACL)
Clutch or B52s
Ben Harper or the Dead Weather
Michael Franti or Dan Auerbach

Please convince me otherwise if you feel strongly about any act listed on the right.

Damn you, Bullet. Well, fer yer thing... ummm... Grizzly Bear or The Airborne Toxic Event. That's the tough one for me. Guess I'd pick The Airborne Toxic Event, because I've seen Grizzly Bear. Daniel Johnston easy. Flogging Molly. Mos Def (though Levon is tempting). Bon Iver. Clutch. Ben Harper or Dead Weather is rough. I'd probably pick Dead Weather because I've seen Ben. And Medeski Martin and Wood would be cool to groove to live. I'm so mobile at this point with work, I can't even plan to go to a show. But, I'm sure to catch a lot of good local bands all across the country.

I'm seeing Grizzly Bear here in Missouri this October. I'm pumped about that. How did you like them live when you saw them, barely?

Grizzly were great live. Great date band. You know, certain bands you HAVE to go with guys to enjoy? Grizzly, Ben Harper, Daniel Johnston, etc... are good date concerts when you're with a cool chick.

In preparation for the "best of the decade" round-up, here's a few of my favorite music related YouTube clips of this decade:

Ok Go - Here It Goes Again

BTW, how great is the line, "It could be ten, but then again, I can't remember half an hour since a quarter to four"? Genius.

Crosby, Stills and Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (Smoke Rings at Burning Man)

Deerhunter - Strange Lights

Thanks for the feedback, BA. Looks like you've confirmed most of my gut feelings.

RE: the tough choices of Ben Harper/ Dead Weather and Grizzly Bear/ Airborne Toxic Event I think it'll come down to proximity/ motivation on my part. Either way, I'm sure I won't be disappointed with whichever set I catch.

Yo BA, add Weezer's Hootenanny concert to this list (if not for the music then do it for Rivers 'stache). Just a ridiculously cool concept to give back to your fans (any one of the below will do):

Say It Ain't So
Island in the Sun
Pork and Beans
Jamie

The Jamie clip is cool b/c it's somewhat of an obscure song that was randomly started by the fans during a lull.

That is very cool. I'm a Weezer fan and didn't know that happened. No idea how I slept on that. Nice video.

Good calls on:
The Allman Brothers Band - The Allman Brothers Band
Blind Faith - Blind Faith

And I never was a Dead fan (though I went to two of their shows). Pick an album you consider their best.

CSN I have lined-up for the 70's.
Déjà Vu – Crosby, Stills & Nash

This is a good list. A couple little preference quibbles:

--I'd take Let it Bleed over Beggar's Banquet and Rubber Soul/Revolver over Abbey Road, Disraeli Gears over Wheels of Fire and Blonde on Blonde over Highway 61, but not by much. Also from the Velvets I think both VU and Loaded are much better than the banana album, though VU wasn't released until 1985 (recorded in 1969) and Loaded wasn't released until 1970.

Some additional:

Live at the Apollo-James Brown (tough because his best work in the 60s was on singles, and his best albums were in the early 70s, but this album really launched his career)

The Stooges-The Stooges (Funhouse, released 1970, is a better album though)

Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul- Otis Redding

Astral Weeks-Van Morrison

The Who Sell Out-The Who (most people would put Tommy, and I think Live at Leeds, released 1970, is their best album)

Good call on Otis. I was thinking of Van and forgot to add. James Brown and Stooges I have for the 70's. And I knew someone would argue the Stones, Beatles and/or Dylan selections. In truth, Sgt Pepper ought to be the selection. I just have an unhealthy love for side B of Abbey Road.
