McGee might actually make the cut for Team USA
Wiretap wrote:Team USA will reveal on Wednesday the fifteen players that will be invited to New York for the Aug. 10-16 training camp in preparation for next month's World Championship in Turkey.

There are currently 19 players on the roster and sources close to the situation claim Kings point guard Tyreke Evans, Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo and Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace will be cut.

Another player will have to be cut as well, but officials were still trying to determine who as of Tuesday night.

I hope so! I think he has a great chance, because they actually need size.

Very surprised he wasn't among the 1st group of cuts. We do need size but with Coach K, I have a hard time believing he'll want a low I.Q, center on his squad.

Team USA needs size? Let Earl Boykins patrol the lane on stilts. Might be just as effective.

One of these guys must be cut:
Rose/Rondo/Westbrook
Billups/Curry/Gordon
Durant/Iguodala/Gay
Odom/Love/Green
Lopez/Chandler/McGee

I figure McGee is probably the logical choice. They play a lot of small ball in international play so Love will probably get plenty of minutes at center with Durant playing some PF. It's hard to see McGee beating out Chandler and Lopez.

One other possibility is that they cut one of Rondo/Westbrook. Having guards with no outside shot is a real liability in international play. Of course, by that logic, it's hard to explain why they cut Mayo.

That's the cut to 15, but is that the last cut? I thought they could keep only 12 players when they actually start playing. I'm not a big Mayo fan, but he played really well in the televised scrimmage. And the US could definitely use Wallace's physicality - though his offense is not suited for the international game.

You are right. I believe they're cutting it down to 15 fo rthe New York training camp, but will have to cut it down to 12 when the actual games start. I don't much care if McGee makes it to the final 12, but I'd like for him to have the training and experience of another training camp alongside some of the best players and coaches in basketball.

Surprised to see Danny Granger make that cut. Unfortunately, McGee looks like a logical cut but I wouldn't be surprised if it's Rondo. They have plenty of PGs and Rondo's lack of a shot will limit him in FIBA play.

Oh well. It's not like it wasn't expected. The idea that McGee is among the best 15 players available to represent the U.S. is a frightening prospect. Hopefully it was a good experience for him.

Agreed.

Hopefully being recognized pushes him to work on his game harder.

Granger should make the final team. They need his jump shot (and for him to be healthy). He could end up being the #2 scorer on the team.

This was probably a great experience for Jav. Hopefully, the coaches were honest with him on his deficiencies, and hopefully what they told him sinks in.

Yeah, Granger is a real good fit. He also has the size to play PF in international competition.

Crap... well, the fact that it took so long to make the decision shows they really liked some things he brought to the team. Despite the fact that he would have been by far the least fundamentally sound player perhaps in the history of USA basketball and that includes the under 18's...

Hopefully this will get him mad and get him to be a little more serious about basketball because as soon as he takes a professional approach and becomes (as I think Sam Cassell said) a true student of the game, he will start destroying the NBA like he destroyed summer league.

I'm really happy with the way things worked out this summer with him, as long as he stays healthy he's going to continue growing physically and mentally- it's going to take a few more years, but I am really excited about this kid.

Not with the lack of big men they already have. He could play the 4 next to Dwight Howard or maybe Amare, but not when they need more bulk and phyiscality.

Also, I think Granger is overrated. He can shoot, but so can plenty of the other guys on that roster who do lots more other things. I think they should have kept OJ Mayo instead. Mayo looked really good in that scrimmage.

Too bad, Javale. Hopefully, the experience of "getting cut" will make him hungrier, but this summer has been an unqualified success for Javale so far. I see a big step forward this season.

Granger actually played a lot of PF this year due to injuries to Troy Murphy and Greg Foster. As it turns out, Indy was actually two points better than the competition with Granger at PF (whereas they were 3 points worse than the competition with Granger at SF). Granger also posted a higher PER at PF but yielded a higher PER as well.

If Granger could make it work in the NBA, I think he can do in the international game with even more success.
