If I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, it's entirely possible Bertans could be traded to the Hawks for the 6th pick. I have no idea how to feel about this because IMO, it sends the wrong message to Brad about winning, and Bertans would be the best outside shooter Wall has ever had. To rob him of the chance to play with Bertans is...not great.

On the other hand, Kevin O'Connor had the Wizards moving up to 6 in a draft night trade (TBJ, 9th, and 37th for the Hawks' 6th pick) so where there's smoke, there's fire?

Yes, you absolutely make that trade. The #6 pick on a cost-controlled rookie contract is WAY more valuable than Bertans at $15M a year.

I just don't see the Hawks making that trade though. The real deal discussed is probably more like Bertans + #9 for #6. I would NOT do that.

If the Wizards traded TBJ and a second to move up three spots in a crapshoot draft like this, Tommy Shepherd should be fired immediately.

Yeah i would move up to the 6th spot for obi toppin for sure! HIgh shoulders make him bigger than his height. Outstanding first step, decent offensive hip bend, great standing reach. He is perfect for Wall and company, and way better than "undersized" big O . We could contend for years with OBI like no one else in this draft. Beal, wall, and Obi Nasty Defense.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

Bertans for the #6 pick -- of course. But... why would Atlanta do that? Why not just sign him? Then it'd be up to us to propose a sign-and-trade. Obviously they wouldn't give us the #6 pick in that scenario.

I would not give rights to Bertans to move up 3 slots. Nor (even worse) Brown & the #37 -- what an idea!

The only reason I could imagine is that like many teams, w/o doing it via trade, how can it be done (like the Milwaukee situation, nobody chooses Milwaukee, people either get drafted to play there, get traded there, or have no better option)? So maybe Atlanta thinks they can't win a competition to sign him, but they'd be willing to trade down or out to insure they have him? That's my guess (I still find it highly unlikely though).

The one thing I heard last week or the week before on Kevin's podcast w/Bill, and via hoops hype was that w/regards to the Wizards, we really like Okongwu, and that we're basically after that guy/after a guy with like MPJ in his draft scale upside, or we'd just rather trade out or down. We seem to view this as an aim for the fences pick, not a "just get the best usable high floor guy" pick in a sketchy draft.

Definitely interesting, but also scary because if you're trying to pull off a home run, you're also radically upping the chances you swing and miss on that upside, however I'm fine with that, we aren't competing for squat long term w/o getting a home run moment in a draft, this year or in the next few. Getting usable parts is largely meaningless, we'll just continue to be a 30-42 caliber win team w/that kinda move.

What a coup it could be to get that 6th pick - if it meant we could get Okongwu at 6 and Halliburton at 9. I'm thinking we offer Bertans and our 2021 1st for 6 and Atl's 2022 or 2023 1st.

There is no legal way to S&T Bertans for a 2020 pick. It would have to be 2021 or later.

Of course, Atl's got cap space to trade for him without an s&t.

Its not legal, its never been. Bertans is a FA. The Wizards don't have his rights to trade.

Obi Toppin with decent hip bend? Ha! Surely you jest! I've seen more hip bend in a nursing home!

Good point.

The only way it could work would be for Atlanta to draft the guy we want with no guarantee that a trade will take place. If, after the free agency period begins, the Wizards manage to agree to terms with Bertans, then maybe they could work out a sign and trade. But I see no incentive for Atlanta to agree to drafting the player we want, and I don't see much incentive for them to give away their pick for Bertans when they can simply pursue Bertans with their cap room.

Lol, offensively he is actually pretty good. It's defensively that he can't maintain it.
I think we can hide him a lil bit. Offensively just think how Nasty we would be with him. Beal and Wall can take alot of breaks and let him carry the load at times. Just think a much better Jamison Offensively and slight better defensively.

Really an extraordinarily audacious thing to say. He's going to be one of the better offensive power/flex forwards of his generation?

He is basically a longer version of Jamison, which means he is inherently better just because he is longer. But offensively they are on the same level. Obviously not identical, Jamison was not a lob threat. But I doubt he slips all the way to 9.

Come to think of it, you're right. If Atlanta is far enough under the cap to sign him, there's no reason they should do a sign and trade. If Bertans wants to go to Atl or NY, he should just sign with them, and the Wiz get nothing.

The only incentive would be to prevent a bidding war - sort of like what Indiana did with Malcolm Brogdan. But Indiana was trading a future (presumably late) first - not a #6 pick.

Right, but in Brogdon's case, he was a restricted free agent, so Indiana was compensating Milwaukee for not exercising their right to match their offer. With Bertans being a UFA, we don't have that leverage.

I would be surprised if Travis Schlenk is not under a whole lot of pressure to improve -- & quick. He has turned out to be a pretty lousy GM, especially for a guy who came from Golden State & was highly regarded.

I understand you want both those guys, but if we assume that 2021 will be a better draft, why not give this year's #9? I suppose the thinking is that next year's R1 pick won't be as high as #9. But, with at least 2 rookies & no Bertans, maybe not true.

In which case, maybe we could include a right to exchange R1 picks next year or get their R2 pick.
