I agree with you on Dark Side over The Wall, but for history's sake (like Pepper should be above Abbey Road), I'm keeping the Wall. I'll hook up most of the rest. But, no I was trying to avoid best of and live albums if at all possible. It's sorta cheating. If an artist has a great album on it's own, then forget the best of. Like with Marley I obviously wanted to do Legend, but Natty Dread is a great, great album on it's own. I cheated with At Folsom Prison, only because that was an event. But, I'd like to keep it clean as possible. If you can find a great album that stands alone, let's use that. I've cut some bands who have great best of albums (for instance BTO and ELP), but don't have a great single album. My messed up rules in my head. Hopefully you get the gist of what I'm shooting for. It's all to get to the 2000's to see who people think are the great modern artists.

1970s

You simply cannot leave out Derek and the Dominos, Layla and other love songs

I consider this the greatest rock GUITAR album of all time. But that's due to the
fact that I consider Duane Allman to be the greatest rock guitar player of all time.
That said, I will not quibble with those who say Hendrix. But my personal preference
is Duane. Duane and Eric Clapton, arguably at his best, makes this album a no brainer.

edit to add - pleased to see Lotus on the list but it breaks your 'live' rule as would
ABB, Fillmore East. I think Dire Straits belongs on the this list as well.

also another personal fave - JJ Cale either Troubador or Naturally

LIttle Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now and/or Dixie Chicken, Sailin' Shoes.

The 60's - 90's list will stil be updated, if people have other recomendations. So, the question is now, what are the albums from this decade that measure up to those great albums of the past? I have my rough list, but want to see what other people think. Any suggestions for a list of best of 2000's? I'll start:

Elephant - White Stripes -- though White Stripes - White Stripes (1999) might be better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp6A1KeX ... PL&index=3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0T5y8Uj ... PL&index=1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKJ_w0-a ... re=related

Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough - Black Keys is an album that'll make ya cry it's so good. But, since it isn't their own material, I'll go with:

Thickfreakness - Black Keys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCEO9Jay ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luwp5iZD8wQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpUAcjV0HQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYOF7ysvnno

Want to hear yours. I'm betting I see a Muse selection and an Opeth.

Most of my favorites albums are by bands that have been used in other decades (Radiohead... In Rainbows is amazing) so let me give as much as I can lol.

Muse - Absolution
The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
Grizzly Bear - Veckitamest
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
My Brightest Diamond - Bring Me The Workhorse

I'd post some vids to justify my faves, but I'm pretty busy. I'll get around it in the next few days if people wonder about any of my selections.

Dallas 3/4ths of your list looks like mine. I'll have to checkout the couple albums I haven't heard. I'm holding off on posting my full list. Interested to see what others think are going to be looked back on as the "classics" or "innovators" of this era -- because I continually hear from old timers that this era has no "classic" music. Sure, the 70s is called "classic rock" for a reason. But, I think people tuned out music in the 1990s and didn't realize that innovative rock came back.

Bullet? Gil? Swami? Anyone else want to play?

BTW, speaking of old timers, my boss asked me recently if I knew what Jeff Beck was up to. It caused me to do a lil research and I discovered he put out a pretty kickin' album in 2003 simply called "Jeff." It's sorta industrial meets the 70s. Really makes you wonder what Hendrix would be doing if he lived. Check it:

Jeff Beck - My thing

Jeff Beck - So What
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbYXWtTmtRw

Jeck Beck - Plan B

Jeff Beck - Pork-U-Pine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N2tdZi- ... re=related

Jeff Beck - Pay me no mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F57ovfZbj1E

And if you don't know Beck, besides his work with the Yardbirds, check out Blow by Blow (1975):
Jeff Beck - She's A Woman

Jeff Beck - Thelonius

Some more that came to mind... all released in the past few years. Some good indie stuff.

Fleet Foxes - Self Titled
Bon Iver - For Emma
of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

Death Cab's Transalanticism was also tight.

Also, speaking of new music, the new Pearl Jam CD is a gem. I'm digging it. The last track on the album is beautiful.

interesting stuff barely. loved that black keys album. gonna do a little posting and run so sorry about that ahead of time (it's still the offseason and i got nothing basketball related to say). oh crap there's a lot of good stuff a page back (well since i opened a bottle i might as well finish it)

i'd add to the 2000s

Los Lonely Boys - "Sacred"
oh yeah, it's a little bit country but it's also rock n roll and it definitely aint the Osmonds.
My Way
Diamonds
Outlaws
Texican Style

gotta have

Kings of Leon (i dont care if they are really popular now Youth and Young Manhood is a bad ass album)

id also put down either Howl or the self titled album from B.R.M.C..

and though im probably a bit biased i think Pure Rock Fury from Clutch is worthy of inclusion.

i dont know. gotta say Blood on the Tracks is the defining Dylan album

other quibbles:
Black Sabbath - i wouldnt go with Paronoid for Sabbath i'd go with Master of Reality (or Vol. 4)
Massive Attack - id go with Protection
war - why Can't we Be Friends is great but The World is a Ghetto might be a better choice

Hi-Bop Ska as good as it is (and it's one of my all time faves) doesnt deserve inclusion since it's all rerecordings no matter how much better the rerecordings sound.

additions:
definites
Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story (70s)
Operation Ivy - Energy (80s)
The Cars - The Cars (80s)
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
Santana - Abraxas (70s)
Moody Blues - Days of Future Past (60s)

probables
Anthrax - Persistance of Time
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights Camera Revolution
Iron Butterfly?

what about?
Tool
Pogues
Beasties
Alice in Chains

there's been a lot of good music in the 2000s just not a lot of good pure blues based rock and or roll. the problem is a lot of the good 2kmusic got really played out, like nappy roots and dangerdoom, and there hasnt been any transcendantly great bands like the Stones, Doors, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Beatles, etc.

now excuse me while i pull out the Cee Lo Green album and remember something good i forgot about.

These two kids in Singapore rip nasty-nice melodic punk rock with a clean california-guitar feel.

Check these two:

I'm yours -- Jason Mraz punk rock cover. Waay better version of an already nice song. Happy Ska feel.

TI-- You can do whatever you like... punk rock stylie. Kicks ass. My wife hated this in the TI version but now wifey doc wants to shave her head and jump around the kitchen breaking stuff.

Then check the two and their friends/family with a traditional holiday anthem from their homeland. Here. Can't legally have more fun than that. I love this world, love the internets...

Oh also, similar to the kutiman thruyou editing deally here's a really pleasant remix of that same Mraz tune, backed by audio clips found out in the world.

I'm yours

really liked this song (though now youtube is having troubles with it) but i swear ive heard the song before but i cant quite place it.

edit: argh... what is that freakin song! i know that song (and so do you). im so close... its something famous... covered by some sort of punk band like rancid or dropkick murphys... ahhhhhh!!!!! im gonna be up all night trying to figure it out... a christmas song? originally in spanish? ahhhh!!!!! damn you doc linkin!!!!!! love the 12 year old showing the little kids what to do and then rockin the  ... a traditional (irish/scottish/english) song? what is that melody?!?!?!?!?! i hate you for this i really do... i can hear that gravelly voice and the group chorus so clearly in my head but i can't make out the words... aaarrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!

anyway: happy (late) eid to all our muslim friends and brothers.

which reminds me about one of my all time favorite covers that sounds completely different but at the same time familiar
Wasis Diop - Defaal Lu Wor
http://www.amazon.com/Defaal-Lu-Wor-Onc ... B001IAR42I
(can't find a proper safe clip so have to go with the amazon preview)

while looking for that i found another cover he did.
check out l'ange djibril (if you like those bowie covers from the life aquatic youll like this buckley cover)
