I think Wall & Beal do less of the mid-range gunning which makes them far more inefficient than they should be. I think possessions where no one else touches the ball and Wall fires off a 20 ft are limited. Those were in many cases wasted possessions. I think we don't see defense take a back seat to installing a joke of an offense last year thusly our defensive efficiency doesn't fall off a cliff. Charlotte somehow morphed into a small ball team last year, and still focused on defense during training camp last season. I don't think the Wizards quit on Brooks like they did halfway through last season on Wittman because Witt ignored their suggestions on P&R coverages and proved to be a stubborn old man.

I think 4-5 games a year is possible. Not because Brooks is an elite coach but because Wall & Beal are more efficient players (due to coaching philosophy).

Is Rico using your login? I don't know how you figure this has been an upper 40's to 50 wins roster for the last 3 seasons. That would require Ernie Grunfeld to have been a solid GM. You can't have it both ways - at least not outside of the internet.

The players are what they are - and that's not because of Wittman. Beal just hasn't been very good. Wittman hasn't forced him to miss tons and tons of open shots, and he's had significant injuries every year. And Wall just isn't a very good shooter. That's not on Wittman. He's always had a problem shooting. The team has always lacked talent around Wall - Wall has been the single elite talent on the team - and yet they've made the playoffs twice. They haven't done better because of one thing - lack of talent. A GREAT coach could have made a difference. A coach like Brooks... maybe 1 win a year, and maybe he loses 1 more. We'll have to see what he does with a roster that doesn't have Durant and Westbrook. He could very well be a game a season worse than Wittman.

I'm not speaking to the roster. I'm speaking to Wall and to a lesser extent Beal. I saw a stat a while back that showed Wall has consistently led the league or been near the top of the league in terms of mid-range jumpers attempted the last 4-5 years. This only amplifies his poor shooting, the consistent desire to keep shooting shots he doesn't shoot well. And who encouraged this behavior? Wittman and his coaching staff. Doesn't it make sense that if the mid-range shot wasn't such an integral part of his game and he didn't lead the league in mid-range attempts, he might be a more efficient player? Wouldn't that likely lead to a few more wins?

Wall took 4.3 3's a game last season - under Wittman. The way Wall should improve his shot selection is to go to the basket more frequently. I'm 99% sure that Wittman encouraged him to do that - rather than settle for jumpers. Any coach would.

Apparently you've lived under a rock the past few seasons...

But the misses didn’t bother Wittman. The turnovers did. Washington committed 18 of them to 17 assists. Wittman wants that ratio to beat least two to one the other way. The statistics, Wittman explained, were connected.

“A couple times when shots weren’t going all of a sudden we passed up shots,” Wittman said. “I tell these guys every day: ‘You’ve got an open shot, you’ve got to shoot it. You’ve got to shoot it. And they’re going to go in.’ I have faith in them, and they have to have faith in themselves. But you work too hard to get an open shot and if you turn it down, the next shot you’re going to take it is going to be worse or it’s going to be a turnover.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wizards-insider/wp/2015/10/30/to-cut-down-on-turnovers-randy-wittman-wants-wizards-to-shoot-more/

At a time when advanced metrics have infiltrated the NBA, statisticians have concluded “long twos” — outside the paint, inside the three-point arc — are the least efficient shot in basketball. Wittman admits he is not one for numbers.

“We’re going to take open shots,” Wittman emphasized. “If a team wants to give us mid-range open shots, we’re going to take them. I’m going to tell a guy that has a wide-open 15-foot jumper to take three steps back and shoot a three? I’m not going to do that.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/wizards/advanced-nba-metrics-wizards-coach-randy-wittman-do-not-agree/2014/10/27/f72ff8a6-5e1d-11e4-91f7-5d89b5e8c251_story.html

SLAM: You love shooting the midrange jumper, even though that’s an unpopular shot in today’s NBA. Is that something you’re going to keep doing?

Beal: That’s definitely a shot that, even though a lot of people in the NBA don’t like, I’m going to continue to work on it. It’s an open shot and I think you’re probably more open shooting that shot than a lot of other shots. It’s just about being able to get the mechanics down and the rhythm down and being able to knock it down.

SLAM: Has the team ever told you to stop taking them?

Beal: Not really, nah. They just let me play my game. Coach Wittman loves those shots. He wants you to shoot everything possible whenever you have the opportunity to.

I'll leave at this - There's a big difference between OPEN mid-range jumpers and contested ones. Wittman was talking about taking OPEN shots. NBA players should be able to make OPEN mid-range shots. Taking contested mid-range jumpers is a very bad idea, and it's not what Wittman encouraged. Actually, his words in your quotes were "wide open 15 footers".

Oh, thanks for the living under a rock comment. Classy.

Just sayin.

And do those stat freaks keep records of FG% on open 15 footers vs contested 15 footers? :)

I'm sure its a nice contemporary rock tho. :D

And IMO all mid-range shots are bad. Certainly at times, it's a shot you have to take but as Kev once said, it's a sh*t shot.

What's your take on foul shots - Don't take them unless you get paid?

Only if the referee stops play and demands you take 'em.

RIP Kev. By the looks of his twitter, he's too busy marching at BLM rallies to post here.

Kevin's got a good twitter account - with upside. I generally tune in every other day - and there's always something entertaining there - not just politics.

Otto for Covington and Richaun Holmes? Is that crazy? And will PIF verbally eviscerate me for asking?

Remember, Otto's set to get paid next year.

Oubre looks like he worked hard this offseason, I'd happily trade Porter.....or let him be a 6th man.

Too bad we signed Mahinmi.....3 months later it looks even worse.

Same thing with those blasted offensive rebounds -- bad idea, and if you get one you should just give it back to the opposing team. :)

No mostly because I haven't been a fan of either Porter or Mahinmi for their entire careers. They are what they are...

Which tells me you outright ignore the fact Otto was arguably our 3rd best player last season and Mahinmi quarterbacked a very good defense as Indiana's starting C. I didn't like the fact Mahinmi got $16 mil but he's not bad player, in fact he was one of the best defensive C's in the league last year.

I wish. :)

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.
