Alright. Alright. I'll change um.

BanndNDC wrote:Hi-Bop Ska as good as it is (and it's one of my all time faves) doesnt deserve inclusion since it's all rerecordings no matter how much better the rerecordings sound.

Yeah, I know I couldn't find one album I wanted to include and cheated with them. I'll work on it and play fair.

additions:
Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story (70s) (I'll add)
Operation Ivy - Energy (80s) (I had that)
The Cars - The Cars (80s) (I'll add)
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove (I had Mothership)
Santana - Abraxas (70s) (I had)
Moody Blues - Days of Future Past (60s) (I had)

probables
Anthrax - Persistance of Time (Hmmm I'll think about. I love Anthrax but...)
Slayer - Reign in Blood (I'll add)
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights Camera Revolution (I'll add)
Iron Butterfly? (I'll add)

what about?
Tool (I had them)
Pogues (I had them)
Beasties Considered, but kept off because figured they were rap. But you're right should add)
Alice in Chains (I'll add)

TY for additions, Band.

BTW:

60's I'd add Creedence Clearwater Revival: Bayou Country. Fortunate son, '"it ain't me..."

70's I can't see a list of iconic albums of the era without the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, don't know if collections cheat the rules. That and Yazoo: Upstairs at Erics (early 80's) were probably permanently acid-burned into my grey matter by my sister. (Ditto Eurythmics, and Rod Stewart, though I'm not sure if there's an iconic album by Rod, just a string of singles)

80's I would have gone with Jane's Addiction's 'Nothings Shocking' here instead of 'Ritual de lo Habitual' in the 90's. That album still fuses my brain like a pocketful of warm gummy bears.

(If collections are allowed I'd have the Repo Man soundtrack).

90's on my personal list I'd have Soul Coughing: Irresistible Bliss. Title is the album for me. Never fails to make me happy.

(And another soundtrack: Judgment Night).

Yeah, I don't really have much to add to the 2000's music. You guys are way more able to identify "good" music than me. There are artists you've listed (Bon Iver, the Decemberist, Death Cab, Fleet Foxes, Jack White's various acts, and I'm sure there's plenty more that were listed but I can't recall off the top of my head) that I would throw on my 2000's list.

Anyway, there are bunch of other artists that came about post Y2K that I'm damn grateful for as they've given back to me in ways that I would classify as "good" music (whether it's an album, a song, a specific lyric or even something simple like a guitar lick/ rhythm that I want to learn).

I'm not as knowledgeable as you guys as to what makes a band/ song "great" but in addition to a lot of what's already been listed here are some other acts I like in the new millennium (again this is based on the criteria above (i.e. the artists (and their albums) could suck but there are songs that get constant rotation on my iPod for my own personal satisfaction)):

Damien Rice
The Streets
The Cold War Kids
Ryan Adams (although technically I guess Whiskeytown was in the late 90's)
Kings of Leon
Okkervil River
Athlete
Connor Oberst/ Bright Eyes
Ray LaMontagne
Pela
John Mayer

And doc's 'i'm yours" cover lead me to this Jason Mraz cover:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOVHbSdd ... EC&index=0

As a guitar novice, this clip blew me away, but a co-worker of mine (who is a pretty well established guitarist) nonchalantly dismissed this as 'pretty easy" (which I still don't believe).

Anyway, I thought this John Lennon look alike in his Daniel Johnston-esqe "Hi, How Are You" sweatshirt was worth a post.

Yep, I know. I was going to add just for that song. Actually Green River is probably better IMO. There are certain artists that I have this odd aversion to now (though I used to love them). Boston, CCR, The Who... just don't seem retro-hip anymore through my odd filter. But, you're right I should add.

doclinkin wrote:Yazoo: Upstairs at Erics (early 80's)

If memory serves that's the "inside there will always be, outside there will always be" I before E except after C song? Good song. No clue about the album.

I'll add Jane's Addiction's 'Nothings Shocking' and Soul Coughing: Irresistible Bliss. Judgement Night and Repo Man (though I own and love all of them) are collections. Was trying to list great individual groups/artists based on a full album (not a one hit wonder). We should add the Bee Gees though. And Saturday Night Fever is almost all Bee Gees, so we'll let it side.

I'm in Chitown. I'll finish my list when I get back. And come to think of it I'll just change the old lists to what everyone else wants. Dark Side of the Moon it is.

Very cool selections, Bullet. A couple I don't know, but many were already going to be on my list. Speaking of Connor Oberst, I also have Monsters of Folk on mine. I'll update mid-next week when I get back.

Love that clip. Kid has another nice song here, a cover of a song I'm not sure I've heard before. Real Late Starter. I can relate.

Grrrr not in album form. Kidding. No, those are some great tunes. But, for instance, I like the Kooks a great deal. I think their Coldplay covers are better than the original. But, do you think their full album will stand the test of a couple decades? That's what I was shooting for. Full albums that will be looked back on as classics. It's all subjective obviously. But, trying to avoid single hit wonders by finding albums where there are several great songs on them, cementing that band as one that will last through the ages. I love the Foo Fighters. But, I wouldn't consider them groundbreaking or have any classic full albums.

this is fun, good stuff barely, hard to find fault with any of your choices, but I do feel inclined to add a couple of thoughts. Miles Davis put out a "rock" record in the early 70s titled A Tribute to Jack Johnson, which, to me, is a classic. It might get over-looked or lumped in as a "jazz" album, but it qualifies as rock to me. It, along with Pink Floyd's Animals, were the pre-eminant discs of my stoner days - great headphone albums.

If you're still open to amending your 70s, how about throwing a KISS (Destroyer, or Love Gun) or AC/DC (Highway to Hell or Back in Black) to appease the proud ex-mullet crowd, like myself. On second thought, I'm not sure if either of those bands have the musicianship to crack such an esteemed list, they did, however, both put know how to out a good albums' worth of music. all killer, no filler.

BA, I totally slept on the Monsters of Folk release. I just downloaded that now and am working my way through it.

Swami - just previewed some of the songs of the new Avett Bros. Definitely gonna download that and listen to it some more on the flight to Austin (I leave Thursday) in preparation for seeing them at ACL.

Dallas - I'm finally getting around to listening to PJ's Backspacer and am loving it. The first 3 tracks are just a freakin adrenaline rush. These old knees might have to get up in the pit and introduce a forearm or two to some kids grill in Austin when/if PJ plays "Got Some".

And if they don't, they'll play 30 other songs that might make you do that! They play awesomely long sets and, from what I hear, have amazing energy live. I think this is a solid, fun, and enjoyable album and I've listened to it straight through like 10 times just yesterday.

Yeah, PJ definitely brings the energy live.

I haven't seen them live since the Yield album (probably 10 or so years ago now, I guess) but am looking forward to seeing them again on Sunday.

I'm listening to the new album again now.

Takes me awhile to get past the first 3 tracks though (I keep hitting repeat), but when I finally do move along I'm hearing "Into the Wild" outtakes on "Just Breathe" and "The End" (don't get me wrong cuz I'm not complaining...I love the"Into the Wild" Soundtrack).

I'm so psyched for the Austin City Limits festival this weekend.

I've got a lot a "good" problems to decide on in terms of which bands to see when there are conflicts.

And to be honest, it really doesn't matter which acts I see because I'll be hanging out with my big brother (who I haven't seen since Thanksgiving 08) and I won't be working.

id agree with you that Back in Black has to be on a list and that Kiss needs to be represented. i tend to agree with you that the key aspect of a great album is the general lack of truly crap filler. kiss may not be "great" musicians but i think we underestimate how hard it is to create a more than one great solid songs that stay in your head (which is why i think the self title Cars album is so good). i guess it all comes down to how one defines a great album.

Guys Back in Black was and has been on the list the entire time. I'll include "destroyer." And Band, Clutch was already on my list.

BTW, I have a gripe with Mr. Zakk Wylde's band (man I butchered his name the first time round). I've been waiting for them to put out an album that I like. I love most of the riffs. But to me every song sounds like Ozzy's guitarist needing a lead singer and song writer. I want to like it but never have. I know they have a cool image. The music doesn't do it for me.

mea culpa. i did it before also. im sure we're just accidently skipping over them when we scan the list. thank you for your continuing patience with our failure to read closely.

i kind of agree and tend to find his albums real hit or miss. although ive always thought Losing Your Mind by his Pride and Glory incarnation to be a pretty good song in which his voice works great.

I suspect looking back long years from now any 90's retrospective of classic music will include Green Day, probably The Offspring also, highlighting the 'punk rock goes mainstream' concept, at least for that decade.
