JOHN CONVERSE TOWNSEND

Otto Porter – F, Georgetown

Imagine you’re at a speed-dating event. You make your rounds, but no one really excites you. There was one girl, however, who did catch your attention. We’ll call her Portia (oddly pronounced “Otto Porter”).

What was it about her? The Georgetown education? Possibly. Maybe it was because you were certain you’d seen her around the city … somewhere, sometime. Most likely it was the fact that her mother, Joan (pronounced “John Thompson III”), was hovering behind her, interjecting into your conversation with things like “Marry her!” and “She’s perfect for you, man” and “Can’t you see that she’s the most eligible bachelerotte here?”

Joan freaked you out a bit, but perhaps she was right. You were lonely and it was summer and it seemed like all of your friends were getting married.

It could work out, you tell yourself. Portia did have long legs and while boring, awkward and homely, she wasn’t a total buzz kill.

So, you swap digits and find out she lives a few block from your place. You date for a bit and, after a few months, you decide to get hitched. Joan finds out—she’s thrilled, of course. Portia is excited. You’re nervous, but in the week leading up to the big day, you successfully convince yourself that marrying Portia is something you need to do.

The wedding goes smoothly. The marriage … well, it has its ups and downs. You don’t have any major complaints, but you just can’t shake the feeling that you made the wrong decision.

Fin.

That's good - but maybe you bring in Paul Harvey to tell you "the rest of the story"?

So a few years down the road, you're still wondering whatever happened to the One That Got Away. You let yourself be talked into the less exciting girl, and find yourself thinking what life would be like with that one girl that caught your eye.

And then you turn on the local news and see a report that she just got arrested for knocking off her old man. And he's her 3rd husband. Oh, and based on the mug shot, she's ballooned up to around 200#.

And you go back to your boring wife, fully content that you avoided the drama, chaos, and pain that could have been yours if you had gone with the "exciting" girl.

:D

Nice but I was waiting for the additional embellishment that when they
started looking at the accidental deaths of her first 2 husbands, things
looked at little fishy (not you Ben).

If Bennett is the pick i think we may have to put Dark Faze and Dat on suicide watch.

#Otto Porter to Wizards says ESPN. They say John Wall lobbying for Bennet. Len of Md to the Suns says ESPN @DMV_Nation @wusa9

I'm not convinced we actually know that. Could be true, or not.

I think the last time we tried to get a good group together to watch the NBA draft at a restaurant/bar was the year they made the trade for Jamison so we just cancelled it. So hopefully we don't have a repeat type thing this year.

If Wall is really lobbying for Bennett, it could tip the decision in Bennett's favor given the Wizards desire to re-sign Wall. Ernie likes to keep owner and stars happy.

Sheridan still says his "source" is confident the Wiz prefer Bennett over Porter. http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2013/06/27 ... no-2-pick/
I don't buy it. I think Sheridan's just trying to get attention.

Illuminaire wrote:Did anyone else watch the Otto Porter "job interview" with Simmons and Rose? Wasn't terribly interesting, except for one thing. Porter talked about how in high school he had always played center. He only transitioned to the wing in college, which is why he only really had a chance to work on his shooting and ball handling over the last year.

That explains why he has a half-decent post-up game - during most of his development, that's what he was asked to work on. I think that also gives credence to the idea that he has more of a ceiling than we might expect, since he's really only starting into training for wing skills.

I watched it and found it interesting. His shot is pretty good though.

If he could progressively get a little bigger, we could play him in some small ball 4 situations down the road.

As drafts approach (NFL, NBA, etc.) general group think get's muddled and things never seem to go according to plan. Sheriff Floyd dropped in the last NFL draft MKG went #2 last year, I could go on. Since the lottery happened Porter seemed to be the group think consensus for Washington, but I have a feeling that a clearer picture will come into focus over the course of the next few hours, in which Bennett will end up being the selection, and Porter will end up dropping to 6-7. I have no basis to substantiate this theory, but that's my gut feeling in the final hours.

Sheridan is the only one saying anything definitive - both about the Wizards and the cavs. He's going to look like an idiot if he's wrong.

It's like going to prom with your 2nd choice and you have to spend the night watching HER dance with someone else. Of course if things... "pan out" you'll still have a pretty good night but it would take a lot for you to stop wondering "what if"

You drafting off of emotional attachment, rather than a combo of talent and need.

I say the Wizards need to get ether Len or Bennett. They have a nice combo of talent and fill a need.

Wizard hasn't had a franchise center in years!!! Len if he builds upper body strength can be a beast.

Bennett if he develops more strength and improves his shooting and handles, he would be Nene 3.0.

I would be happy with those two.
Not an emotional pick like Porter. He doesn't fit the Wiz

Len's going number 1. It's between Bennett or Porter. I guarantee Wall hasn't been lobbying for Bennett. Someone was probably like, "Hey John, would you like Bennett onthis team?" And he was probably like "Yeah, we could use a stretch 4."

Turn that into "Wall wants Bennett".

Wall is going to be happy as long as it someone that helps them win ball games. Who gives us the best chance to do that?

That's the question.

he is a tweener and that he succeeded in college based on physicality
(he does have a pro body, except for length, an important characteristic)
but that he will have much greater difficulty in doing those same things

I certainly won't root for him to fail if he is our pick

but would be somewhat more anxious about what he might end up
doing for us.

This is a generic criticism that applies to every prospect. Every propsect will have to adjust to the jump in competition.

someone else may have already responded but just in case...

sure it applies to everyone, but it doesn't apply to everyone equally.
The folks that question AB @3 are clearly thinking it applies to him more than most.
And I think there are legit reasons for that. Those reasons may not turn out to be true.

But why is Bennett particularly vulnerable to a jump in competition compared to others like, Porter?

He's an NBA caliber athlete with NBA caliber skills after all.
