I used to be a Westbrook hater, but his stint here in DC inspired me to reassess.

He is such an unusual player. He is inefficient and has no conscience, so the stat nerds can fairly easily conclude that he is a net negative on offense given his TS% and USG%. But somehow, when I watch him play, I can't help but include that his relentless energy and aggressiveness have positive effects that aren't being counted by the stats. If nothing else, it's just a pleasure to watch him play with so much effort and joy. And it truly is remarkable that, at age 36, he is still one of the best athletes in the NBA.

By the way, Jokic casually posted 35 points (on a .714 TS%), 15 assists, 12 rebounds, 4 steals and only 1 turnover that game, and it's not even the headline. He was +33 in the 38 minutes he played that night. In the 10 minutes he sat, the Nuggets were outscored by 14.

That's the big thing- if Westbrook was with another player like LeBron/Durant (at this stage of their career anyways) - Westbrook would be viewed as a lot worse but as a $4 million player - he's fine. Still remains to be seen though what this means once Denver gets into the playoffs although other than OKC, Denver seems to have as good of a chance as any other team in the West.

Pat Spencer getting meaningful minutes Friday for the Warriors. Scored 17 in 20 minutes on Friday. Season stats look pretty bad, though...

deeply unserious team

I remember many around here were criticizing Butler/Jamison for jacking up shots and not playing any defense on that 2008-09 team that finished with 19 wins. But I don't believe there was a game given that Butler didn't play without Jamison that season.

I think I found the game in the 2007-08 season https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200804050CHI.html.

Spoiler:
Jamison missed only 3 games that season and this was the only one where Butler played and Gilbert Arenas was also out

Thomas Bryant is having a great season as a backup for the Pacers

He is shooting 59% from the field, 69% of 2 pointers, 45% from 3. Averaging 12.8 rebounds per 100 possessions.

He has become a pretty decent back up center .

We have a long history of, young bigs going off to being good roll players and solid back ups.

McGee, Wagnor, Bryant.

Let's pump the brakes here. There isn't any reason for regret in moving on from Bryant. Bryant has been a vet minimum journeyman for 3 years now. He played a grand total of 441 minutes last season, that's not even a backup's minutes; that's garbage time minutes. This season, he has played a total of 322 minutes in half a season. Again, that basically garbage time.

Also, he is 27 years old, so WYSIWYG. The guy can put the ball in the bucket, but he is a terrible defender.

And don't get me started on McGee who was an awful player until he finally figured out how to be a marginally competent backup big after 10 years in the league. There's nothing to regret there. The guy was waived twice and signed 3 vet-minimum contracts after leaving the Wizards. Trading him for Nene was a steal.

Wagner is good. I regret letting him go.

Well, I was Thomas Bryant's biggest promoter on this board, but nate is correct.
OTOH, the kid had an injury that, often enough, is career-ending for a big.

While I'm at it, I was also wrong about Mo Wagner!! :)

there are much better picks for lamentations of guys that have left the wizards to go onto bigger and better things, like 3/5 of Detroit's 2004 championship squad.

Indeed. Fortunately, most of those disasters were quite a while ago.

There really haven't been too many cases in the last 10-15 years or so of us selling low or giving up on guys who then went on to be quality starters elsewhere. There have been a couple of nice role players like Garrison Mathews, and GPII, but they're also getting paid commensurate to their worth and they really don't make sense to retain on a team that is trying to rebuild.

Garrett Temple had a couple of years as a part-time starter in Sacramento at a cost of $8M a year when we let him walk. That ended up being a pretty nice signing by Sacramento, but not really a massive loss for us since we had a pretty expensive roster at the time and probably couldn't afford him without luxtax implications.

We let Oubre go because we couldn't afford to pay him. He had a couple of decent seasons in Phoenix, but didn't really live up to his new contract so there's not much to regret there.

We traded away Sato in a S&T for a couple of SRP's. I didn't really like that, but IIRC, he wanted to move on.

We let Daniel House go, but he was waived 3 more times by other teams before finally figuring things out and finding a home in Houston.

I don't regret Rui, Gafford, Bertans, or Troy Brown Jr. either.

I really liked Mo Wagner and was hoping they would have kept him. Instead they decided to keep Bonga who was absolute garbage.

It probably wasn't realistic to re-sign Wagner after the Westbrook trade when they got Harrell in the Westbrook trade and already Porzingis, Gafford, and Bryant.

the glass half empty interpretation of that is that we pooped the bed in terms of draft picks and none of those guys were good enough to become quality starters elsewhere regardless of situation.

looking at you Johnny Davis.

My favorite comment on the reel was Black Jokic.
