So far, Gil's 4 of 16 in the 47 minutes he's played for Memphis - with no foul shots. 8 points and 10 fouls - as he shakes away the rust. Conley seems to be banged up, so there's ample opportunity for him.

7-Day Dray wrote:I only saw him in the 1st half, but he did a good job finding teammates, and played like a pure PG. He's not going to be anywhere close to a "dominant" offensive player though. He still isn't attacking the rim, and while he's lost weight, he's still nowhere near as quick as he was in his prime from what I saw. He'll be a good backup.

Jason Kidd was very successful for years without being lightning fast. Skill and smarts can overcome the lack of lightening speed.

Arenas re-inventing himself as a "defensive ace"?

i was watching that game and was stunned by Gilbert's defense on KD. Absolutely stunned.

It just goes to show you: if you instill a good defensive scheme and preach defense, a la Wittman for us, then the players will react.

Gil was great for us, but he was never a good defender.

In just 15 minutes.

Hopefully he gets his rhythm going again and gives them that kind of production during the postseason. Memphis is one of my picks to get to the WCF.

If he can get his 3 point shooting on track and play D, I think he can help them a lot. I don't think he is more of a boost off the bench player at this point, but I think he could be very useful.

Arenas is definitely finding his rythmn, slowly but surely. He has made a difference 2 games in a row now.

But I am shocked at how much the knee is effecting him. He has a noticeable limp at all times. Seems that a trivial knee injury turned into one of the most devastating knee injuries in NBA history.

I want to see him play but keep missing the game.

They tee up tonight against Dallas. I hope he plays again. Last game I was ready to watch he was sitting out.

The Grizzlies are crazy deep and Lionel Hollins has the weirdest rotations I've ever seen but I'd assume that Arenas is going to be getting regular minutes from here on out.

The organization loves him.

I'm happy for him. It would be classic Arenas to work himself out of the situation he was in. Rooting for Gil the rest of the way!

Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins likened Arenas’ early impact to Shane Battier’s effect on the team last season. Battier provided a calming influence in the Memphis locker room over the last 23 games of last year’s regular season and was the steadying force behind the Grizzlies shocking first round upset over the San Antonio Spurs.

“[Arenas] has helped with his experience,” Hollins told HOOPSWORLD. “Last year, we had Shane Battier down the stretch and it really helped us. We needed a veteran guy who could tell these guys, ‘slow it down, this is the situation,’ and get them talking basketball and understanding the mind of basketball versus just the physical of basketball. That’s how you win.

“If everybody just looked at the physical, there’s other teams that should be winning, but the game of basketball to me is 80 percent mental and 20 percent physical,” Hollins continued. “That’s why a Dallas, that’s why Boston can be on top for as long as they have when you have all of these young, exciting, high jumping teams that still are losing. That’s because you’ve got to play to win… so it’s not how many points you score, it’s when you score them and what you’re doing in other areas – moving the ball and creating stuff for your teammates – that allows you to win games.”

The Wizards need a veteran player just like Gilbert Arenas to mentor John Wall.

Hey, wait a minute! :)

LOL. Yeah... unfortunately, there was too much organizational baggage, and he made too much money to be a backup mentor.

Gil needed the fresh start even more than the Wiz team did.

The Lakers passes on Gil and it appears that he has found a better fit in Memphis. I get the feeling that Memphis is slowly warming-up the hibatchi to unleash during the playoffs.

Having Rudy Gay healthy, Zach Randolph back in shape by the start of the playoffs, and Gilbert having his three-point shot together, Memphis has a pretty good team. They killed Miami in Miami--nobody else has done that in a long, long time.

Tony Allen and Mike Conley are tough defenders. It looks like a pick from last season, Quincy Pondexter, is starting to assert himself. I thought he would have had success in the NBA before now.

Memphis might go far in the playoffs. I thought they got ripped off by a bunch of bad calls in their series with OKC.
