Toronto has one of the best 4th lines in the league with Martin-Boyle-Kapanen, it's been a huge factor. Plus, they will get Zaitsev back soon, their best defenseman. The caps could actually be in real trouble if they drop the next one in Toronto. They've been outplayed.

If you're watching the Caps vs Leafs game, log into the game thread (link in post, above).

3-1 caps midway thru the second period.

It's remarkable that over thirty five plus years, two owners, three GMs, several coaches, hundreds of players, playing against many different teams, they have consistently underachieved. If you want to not call it choking that's fine, but they don't get it done. Game 4 is a must win now. The series is by no means over, but I'd hate to see what the Penguins would do to them if they get through and they don't play better than this.

Caps are in BIG trouble.

The season just turned on a failed 2 minute 2 man advantage.

The Leafs seemed to have taken our best punches and come back swinging harder.

I've been pretty shocked to see how open we've let the games get, particularly when we had a two goal advantage.

Why are you guys surprised? This is a Ted Leonsis owned team. When has any of his teams achieved anything great? My guess will be never.

Did the Caps really underachieve under Abe Pollin? They made the playoffs a lot and made it to the finals once. It would have been nice to win the cup but those teams showed more mental fortitude than these guys.

I still think the Caps can win, but yeah it is an uphill battle.

The Caps playoff runs should be sponsored by Rolaids. Every series turns your stomach into knots. The nice part of the Caps is their consistency - Their playoff runs never last long, and consistently crush expectations.

The game was ready to be put away and the Caps didn't. I don't understand hockey all that well, but it was clear to me that the Maple leafs had FAR more energy and drive as the game wore on. They simply wanted it more.

And their goalie is playing lots better than ours, surprisingly.

Even with Abe, the Caps have been favored in several series and blown 3-1 leads. This predates Uncle Ted.

And that's what it comes down to basically in most playoff series.

It's not just that the Caps always seem to face the "hot" goalie that "steals" a series. They also help to make them look hot and unbeatable.

Either way, giving up 3 goals in regulation in the playoffs is not great which the Caps have the last 2 games.

I wouldn't say they have underachieved. There's only been 2 notable seasons in the Ovechkin era where you could consider the Caps the odds on favorite (speaking in terms of underlying numbers) heading into the playoffs (They've actually been fairly overrated the past couple of years since the firing of Boudreau). The year they ran into a once in a generation performance by Halak, and this year. TBH I didn't expect this to be an easy series going in. The Caps are still the better team imo, but the Leafs are for real. They would have been a tough out for anyone, and probably would have shredded Ottawa.

IMO a lot is falling on Trotz right now. He can't let a team this stacked get pushed around like they did in the 3rd period. The leafs are gonna find ways to score, but it's unacceptable for this team to struggle to get shots up.

It's hard to blame the coaching when we've seen this song and dance before. You look at their run the last what...5-7 years, the Caps should have won at least 1 cup by now. That's all the fanbase needs, just 1.
