I've nabbed a few new albums. Andrew Bird and St. Vincent. I dig them hardcore. Yeah, they're your prototypical indie faves, but at the same time, they really are trying to make their influences into brand new music.

I dig.

On another note, is anyone using www.last.fm? It is another facebook-esque way of getting to know people, but it uses music. It puts down what you play in your media player (ie: ITunes) and it keeps track of your plays. Are any of you on there?

Have been a bird and vincent fan for awhile. Posted some of their stuff earlier in this thread. Especially bird is a must hear.

So, my exgirlfriend makes this facebook page for me a couple years ago. And I ignore it because, at the time, I was utterly uninterested in it (and texting, and twittering, etc). So, few months ago, I get an email from it. Another one of my exgirlfriends has tracked me down through it. Suddenly, I have 50 friend requests in a week. One of which is a guy I was really tight with until five years ago. He was a great drummer when we were in highschool, and my band would practice in the same house as his.

Last I heard, this cat was climbing poles for verizon -- while playing with a home studio. Come to find out this cat got a buyout from the union five years ago, and used the money to plow full into his recording studio. He grew a rep in the biz, and this mf'er has been mixing kanye west albums and grammy nominated s'. He's currently doing the new Jill scott album. I told him, "ok me and you are doing something for new years together. So, whatever Jill Scott is doing, I want in." Man, like all my friends and exgirlfriends made it. I better get goin' catching up.

Wow that's a hell of a story. It's crazy when a person finds out what everyone from their high school is doing. When I see someone from my high school get offered a 6 figure job, I remind myself sadly I'm here in college to be a school teacher.

And I'm going to make other people earn 6 figure incomes ;)

Playing Rock Band has really opened my eyes to music I would never have listened to before. I created a Nirvanna station on Pandora and a lot of nice tracks are coming up, especially the Pearl Jam stuff.

No doubt that rock band has influenced an artform that died first with mass appeal of hair bands, and then the emoness that grunge became. Check out the Melvins who influenced almost all of grunge. Bands like wolfmother are riding the rebirth of the guitar with rock band and guitar hero.

Thanks for posting these BA.

As you may already know, I started taking guitar lessons a few years ago. But what you probably don't know was that my decision was heavily influenced by Ray LaMontange (and Damien Rice and Elliot Smith and Ryan Adams and Jeff Buckley and Townes Van Zandt and etc).

Oh and after hearing Ray for the first time I made the decision to grow a ridiculously untamed beard for a good 4 months (girlfriend and management didn't think the beard was a good decision).

To this day my favorite Ray song is Jolene. I just relate to those lyrics all to well.

Just can't get enough of the acoustic singer/ songwriter stuff.

Right now I'm entrenched with Bon Iver (still!), Ovkervill River, Nick Drake and Avett Brothers (shout out to daswami).

The guy who you didn't list, 'proof, is Cat Stevens. I think of Ray LaMontagne as this generation's Cat.

My NPR friend re-introduced me to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, by telling me they (not to mention Moby and the Mountain Goats etc etc) played a Tiny Desk concert at her work. Just like your work huh? Overwhelming jealousy on my behalf. Anyway, Clap reminds me of a mix betwix early Talking Heads and Violent Femmes.

question for the group since 'tis the season and all: what are your holiday music faves this time of year? I know Dylan has a new xmas album out, but the samples i listened to were ... meh. I downloaded Weezer's xmas EP after I heard their version of "hark the herald angels" playing at a record store. but don't limit your recommendations to pop/rock versions of xmas songs. I like the classical stuff, too. last weekend, my wife and i went to see/hear the full version of handel's "messiah" at the national catherdral and i enjoyed it. you can't beat the "hallelujah chorus" for pure emotive power, imho.

My holidays are all about Frank, period. And if not Frank, then Ray Charles. And if not Ray, then Elvis. But, my favorite Christmas song of all time is "Father Christmas" by the Kinks. And OK Go did a decent remake of that:
