Oddly I'm more eagerly anticipating what we do lower down than whatever would fall to us at 9, if we weren't trading up or down.

International player bias. Dudes that don’t defend won’t beat anybody.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Deni Avdija was by far the most talented guy on the board at #9; no matter how bad a guy is going to be, in that situation you have to take him. The fact that we could have traded down (or up -- even sideways) & done better or equally well if not worse will never prevent this guy from being out of the league sooner than any player who has ever turned out to be the steal of the draft (which, barring other outcomes, is what I predict for him).

One thing you know: when you pick a sure thing, you're up for a wild ride. I look for this guy to ascend quickly -- he's a strong candidate for RoY, maybe even Training Camp Player of the Year: he's gonna come on that fast.

Listen, you have to keep in mind that the draft is a crap shoot, & we scored big: Deni Avdija has a very high ceiling. In fact, I'd say he has a cathedral ceiling! No, I mean a synagogue ceiling, of course.

& that's just on the first floor. He has a second floor as well -- tho I don't know how high the ceiling is up there.

It's a sure thing that this guy will provoke a lot of doubt & uncertainty for as long as we don't know what out of his past he can improve in the future -- & vice versa. Above all, it seems that the people who like him are an entirely different crew from those who don't -- very little overlap -- but I think that with coaching we can get past that.

In any case, as all of you have observed so perspicaciously on other occasions, the things he doesn't do on the court, other people can do. But the things he does do will provide a notable extra benefit because of the way the rest of the team does them too. Which should lead to some creative lineups.

Admittedly, until he improves his shooting, he will provide little spacing -- but remember: the timing for his spacing is as yet unknown.

When he gets here & we see him for the first time, we'll have a chance to take another look. Until then, we won't know until then. Leave it at that.

Thank you Perd Hapley
Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

The Consiglieri wrote:I get the Haliburton love, if he can stay healthy there's definitely a lot of evidence that he'll end up being one of the best 3 or 4 guys from the draft 3 years from now and a lot of these guys will be SMH types. Avdija is not a guy you should really be doing that with. He said before the draft if he had a chance to take a big swing, he'd take it. This was a big swing pick. Low floor, high ceiling, projected by seemingly everyone to go top 3-5. We got him at 9. I would've loved Haliburton too (and would love to trade for him still, no reason we can't do that), but in a bad draft, swinging for the fences tends to help more than just trying to fill a role. We'll see.

I also don't care about next year. We aren't contending/winning next year, so I don't really care about trying to get us to say 40 wins, I'm fine w/stinking again for a distinctively better class in '21, and Avdija should help with that since he won't provide a ton of immediate help.

With the Kings taking Haliburton and needing another playmaker after losing Bogy... Guessing a trade won't happen.

Avida is an "interesting" pick for the Wizards. I think he (like Rui) would benefit a rim protector behind him. He is strong but not going to be a lockdown D wing or PF. I think that is who the Wiz should have targeted... But he is a solid positional defensive rebounders and gets his hands on balls.

He has pretty good BBIQ and the ball doesn't stick and he is really crafty off the ball. He can be a playmaker when put in that roll, passes well, rebounds the ball well I was always puzzled why he could well as a spot-up shooter from 3pt land but not from the free throw line. I think his mechanics are pretty good. If he gets his shooting mechanics down - he will be fine on the offensive end.

Lastly, seems like a good person, seems like he works hard.

Any favorites for the second round pick? Azubuike is gone. Any bigs that could be serviceable defenders or rim protectors? Guess we'll need to find one in free agency.

Oturu is not bad. Watched him a lot as a Maryland fan. Pretty decent defender and has three-point range.

Jaden McDaniels too? Seven picks left and Tillman, Oturu and McDaniels.

6 picks til ours, and on ESPN's big board, XT is the 7th best talent listed. I am prepared to be frustrated. A high upside or unknown Euro guy is their usual pick in the 2nd round.

Since Flynn & Bane are gone, Tillman is the guy I want.

I like Tillman.A lot tougher and meaner. I didn't realize he had a 7-1 or 7-2 wingspan. Oturu maybe a little more upside offensively, but yeah, either one is fine in the second round. You aren't getting Anthony Davis, but they could help.

Vernon Carey Jr or Daniel Oturu, also wouldn't mind Tre Jones or Devon Dotson, or Isaiah Joe.

McDaniels was drafted at 28.
