And nope, don't think I've ever heard that cut, Fish. But, I'll certainly look for it.

CCJ got me hooked to that bassy funk the last few. Matterafact, King Curtis had me shufflin' and bobbin' in an Exxon parking lot at six in the morn on a Saturday. And that takes some serious basswork. Random way back funk rounded off with some house since you're up already...

Great stuff, ba!

Eddie Harris reminds me a lot of TS Monk. Your post led me to play some other You Tube sessions of Harris, including with Les McCann. One of the jams "Compared to What" I recall my dad playing way way way back in the day.

On Miles Davis, thanks to Spike Lee movies his music has gotten serious airplay with the younger set. I'll always recall that back in the day strange looking Miles called Cicely Tyson ugly. That wierd dude should have kissed her "ugly" feet each day they were together.

One of my favorites from back in the day played a little like Miles. Freddy Hubbard

My all-time favorite trumpet player was the man. Maynard Ferguson.

Probably his best mainstream stuff was Gonna Fly Now or he renditions of MacArtur Park and Birdland. I like this clip that shows how he really got into his performances. (That dude almost lived to 80 is remarkable considering he had to be on speed). Maynard performing Gospel John.

Same tune, with a spirited live performance featuring a pretty old Maynard.

ba, I don't have time but will go through each tune and the rest in you later post. This is WAY MORE FUN than thinking about the Wizards or anything hoops related right now. :)

Did you say you like funky bass, barelyawake?

Check out Brothers Johnson, Strawberry Letter 23

From 1:53-2:11 and about the last 30 seconds the bassist carries this song.

That song and type performance is something today's groups can't touch.

Why do you think I spend all my time in this thread and not debating whether Java should play or not?

Of course, I respect Maynard. Friend of mine met him once. But, Freddie is more my speed. Love that clip. I like that smokey jazz room sound more than the big band hall -- though I listen to both.

Think I'm going to depart from the "funky" theme for a sec, and do a little tribute to bass players (some of which are funksters, but many are rock -- which might not be your particular brand of Earl Grey, CCJ.) But please, keep up the posting in this thread. As you said, it's much more enjoyable than the Wizards' section of this board currently.

I also listen to both, but I'm the opposite - I prefer the big band stuff. I could listen to Sinatra all day, every day (with a little Buble mixed in between). Still, folks like Ella and Satch who can pull off both sounds are pretty freakin' awesome.

For folks local to DC, there's a great jazz singer named Sharon Clark who's regularly at the Mandarin hotel with Chris Grasso's trio. She'll be singing at the Sunday brunch after the Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival next month in Rockville. That's a can't-miss for me.

Wow, I never knew Neil Sedaka did a slow version of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". Very nice.

Like friggin clockwork. So, my friend who is mixing the new Jill Scott album just facebooked me. "Hey bro, in the studio with Marcus miller. Laying down the bass for Jill's new single." Of course, if you want to know who Marcus miller is you need only look a couple posts above. Again, Im jealous.

Wow, I just discovered Susannah McCorkle only to find out that she'd dead. And by her own hand, no less. Beautiful voice.

Maynard Ferg - there's a blast from the past for me. My alma matter
had him do a concert which I as a college radio DJ was one of the
roadies for. So I got to meet Maynard. This would have been 78-79,
around that time.

Re -King Curtis, if anyone has his album done around 1969 at
Muscle Shoals that would have had Duane Allman on it, I'd
love to get a listen/tracks off that. The Duane Anthologies
cover 2 cuts from those sessions, Games People Play and
The Weight. But I gotta believe there is more.

Oh snap! She's awesome! Wicked combo of two of my favorite styles of music - hip hop and country. I couldn't stop bobbin' my head.

Missed this when you had it up and it's since been removed but yeah 'Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers' has a purely lovely Beatled remix of C.R.E.A.M on youtube.

In honor of the Olympics (what a strange choice for the big finale of the opening ceremony) and the Wizards, Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah.

[They cut Mike Miller's hair!]

Continuing with the theme, BRMC's Mercy

[...it suits your taste for bitter ends. this ache that holds [me] in leaves no place to begin. im afraid ive lost the fight. you're a fool satisfied. Why can't you see? Why won't you speak? Why can't you dream?]

is that the reason im a bullets fan?

reminds me somewhat of our own late great eva cassidy (but eva had a little bit more nina simone in her. heck, simone is combo of mccorkle and cassidy. mckorkle has the jazz, eva has the feeling and all three of them have the voice). Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

I love the sound of the old gourd banjo. Here the late great Mike Seeger musicologist historian and picker with Roustabout. Here you really get a sense of how the Irish indentured servants and african slaves influenced each others music in old time bluegrass.
