Re: Official Not So Random Thoughts Thread Version 2.2
Cramer, you forget. I am a HHS alum, class of '75. I can still remember
when our team came out for warm-ups under the BIG RED COUNTRY
sign in the gym while CCR was blaring over the PA system, Hey Tonight.
I've no idea why they would have removed the sign. At that time,
Herndon had a redneck rep and the sign probably added to the
intimidation factor. I guess with Herndon all upscale now, that's
a thing of the past.
daughter won't be playing tonight, but thanks for the thoughts anyway.
We'll report here later tonight or tomorrow on how her team did.

Our girls came up big and won the game. Woo-hoo.
My daughter, not there, has a medal for being on
the team. I hope she's justifiably proud even if
she didn't play in the playoffs. The other team
was really good and it was a hard fought and
exciting game. I really enjoy watching girls
hoop.

Jimmy, I coached girls HS hoops for three years after college and it was an utter joy. The kids were a lot more emotionally mature (by and large) than the boys and it was much easier to get complete buy-in and sacrifice for personal agendas for team goals. It amazes me that these kids are now doctors and lawyers, but many still keep in touch. One of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

Good lord, Jeff Hornacek was a hell of a player:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... aje01.html
6'3, 190lb 2-guard. Career PER of nearly 18. Posted 19.3 at the age of 34. Never produced at star levels that Ray Allen did in his prime, but has been much better than Allen in his mid-30's.
Another data point in "how much productivity does Gil have left" discussion.

Hornacek's efficiency was incredible. He consistently managed a TS% in the 58-60 range while turning the ball over at an extremely low rate for a SG. He made the top 10 in offensive rating in each year he was with the Jazz except his final year (when he was 36 years old).
If Arenas can manage that kind of efficiency in his new role at SG, then he would be a nice fit indeed. Of course, Hornacek was never paid 40% of the team's payroll.

Re: Official Not So Random Thoughts Thread Version 2.2
Yes nate, I had the same thought. What Gil has going for him is that he's at lot more athletically gifted than Horny and at least has the potential to be a better defender.
I was struck in looking up guys like Andrew Toney, Sedale Threatt, Dennis Johnson, Joe Dumars, etc., how much better offensively Gil is than guys that I (somewhat vaguely) remember as very good players.
I'm hopeful that Gil-Wall can be a better version of the DJ-Gus Willaims combo in Seattle in the late 70's.
But Gil is going to have to play extremely well -- on both ends of the court -- to approach earning his contract.

Rode the bicycle in to work today. It was glorious
but my thoughts during the ride kept returning to
the person of Carl Henn, someone some of you may
have read about recently. He was struck by lightning
and killed on Sunday. He was 48. He was not someone
I knew well although I had met him a few times. He worked
tirelessly and selflessly for bicycle related causes here
at NIH. He also worked hard to make his community a
better place by working for sustainable, quality living.
He ran for Rockville City council, possibly more than once.
I'm not sure.
It's unbelievable that such a person should be taken from
us in this way.

I'm taking a cooking class this summer and a couple weeks ago we made potato-and-leek soup with pesto on the side to mix in as desired. Absolutely amazing and so easy to make, too.

And it freezes fairly well, as does pesto itself.

Twigs wrapped in a ribbon of earth tones make a nice Autumnal centerpiece.
Yeah, I cook.

20th anniversary today
hardly seems possible but we have a kid who will be 15
soon and we didn't rush to get started on whole kids
thing so I guess it must be.

Re: Official Not So Random Thoughts Thread Version 2.2
Congrats, jim! You and yours did it right.
A buddy of mine from way back was married to his wife for over 5 before they had their first. They then had 4 kids within 6-7 years. The oldest two just finished high school. He and his wife are like you and yours. Also, I remember my friend when he struggled early in his career, but he's done quite well for himself over the years.
I am truly happy for you!
Many more happy years to you and yours, jim.

Re: Official Not So Random Thoughts Thread Version 2.2
thanks CCJ - my much better half and I waited 5 years then were blessed
with no fertility issues and had 2 right on our own schedule. Now they're
rising 8th and 9th graders. Hardly seems possible that they'll be (presumably)
out of the house in another 5 years. Time flies.
we watched our wedding video tonight - bittersweet with shots of
many old friends and relatives, a fair number of whom are no
longer among the living.
carpe diem my friend

Memphis should talk to Eddie Jordan about joining their coaching staff as an offense-only assistant. His offense would a great fit for their personnel. Mayo is a "pure combo guard" that would benefit from the Princeton, and Gasol would be a great Princeton center with his passing/shooting to go along with his physicality down low.

And from the Metaphysics perspective MarcG and Coach Eddie have the same Birthday, so, there's that going for them.
See, now, then Memphis would have the team I wanted: Eddie Coaching offense & player-motivation, a Big Man who can pass & rebound, and Dave Joerger teaching defense-- with somebody other than Eddie in charge of the in-game adjustments.

@scabs - none are into racing and the wife put up the huge road block
to the idea of buying them a helmet so I could use the street bike to
shuttle them around.
The older is into fencing and theater sports/drama (she's really good at the latter)
the younger is an aspiring hoops player - she's got very solid shooting and ball
handling skills but needs to improve her athleticism and floor game.

You are like a 6-years-older version of me. My wife and I just celebrated our 14th anniversary. We were married 5 years before having our first kid. Our oldest is now 9. (We have a 7 year old and a 4 year old as well.) And I even work out a lot. (Though I try to avoid insane things like running 100 miles at one time.)
