On Both Sides of the Ball, Terps Dominating the Sack Game

Maryland hasn't hit the hard part of its schedule yet, but there's already strong evidence supporting the preseason hype about an improved offensive line.

The Terps (2-1) are one of five FBS teams not to have allowed a sack yet this season after keeping quarterback Caleb Rowe clean in Saturday's 34-17 win. Maryland, which gave up 37 sacks last season -- tied for second-most in the Big Ten -- won't have as easy a time as it enters a challenging stretch of games beginning Saturday at West Virginia. But pass protection has been nearly perfect thus far.

"It's great communication. [The entire offense] recognizes the defenses and knows which way we've got to slide, or turn our protection to, to take advantage of what they're trying to do to us," coach Randy Edsall said. "If you're executing with good technique, you have a less likely chance of getting beat. Between one on one run blocking and one on one pass rush between our O-line and D-line, we might rep that stuff more than anybody."

On the flip side, when Maryland moved talented pass rushers Yannick Ngakoue and Jesse Aniebonam from linebacker to defensive end during the offseason, it was expected to boost the Terps' sack numbers. And it has; Maryland's defense has been as good as its offense statistically, leading Big Ten with 14 sacks in three games and rank second nationally with 4.67 sacks per game, an effort spearheaded by junior defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (4.5 sacks). He's one of four players in the country with more than four sacks.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

Turgeon Gives Progress Report on Diamond Stone, Rasheed Sulaimon

It’s been a busy summer for Maryland freshman center Diamond Stone.

The McDonald’s All-American from Wisconsin was on campus for only three weeks in the summer, but it served as a crash course on the amount of work it takes to succeed at the collegiate level. When he arrived, it was clear the 6-foot-11, 255 pound center would need to improve his body, and so far, that’s been his main focus since returning to College Park less than a month ago to begin school.

“His head was spinning a little bit, but he’s just a terrific scorer and has a great feel for the game so he’s going to be fine,” Turgeon said Monday when he joined Andy Katz and Seth Greenberg on ESPN Radio. “Right now he’s going through getting his body right.”

Even though Stone is the Terps highest-rated recruit in years, he’ll have to continue to show improvement in order to enter the regular season as Maryland’s starting center. Turgeon said Stone can “put the ball in the basket”, but when compared to junior Damonte Dodd and sophomore Michal Cekovsky, he may still be a bit behind them in other areas of the game. The jump from high school to college requires an adjustment period.

“When you’re new it’s very exhausting for him,” Turgeon said. “Classes, college classes, all that kind of stuff. It gets better every day.”

Caleb Rowe eases into his second week as Maryland’s starting QB

There were several throws that Caleb Rowe would like to have back from last week’s win over South Florida, but by Wednesday the junior quarterback had already forced himself to forget about the past. Rowe allows himself one viewing of the previous week’s game film before closing the book. He moved on to this week’s preparation for West Virginia with more confidence than self-doubt after his 297-yard performance last Saturday, which featured four brilliant touchdown throws and three ill-advised interceptions.

“It’s about West Virginia and the week that we have,” Rowe said. “We just have to be ready for everything that they’re going to throw at us.”

What West Virginia will throw at Rowe is a unique 3-3-5 scheme that is predicated upon movement up front and disguising coverages in the secondary. Maryland enters the contest rejuvenated offensively, which comes on the heels of Rowe’s promotion as the starter early last week.

He displayed the kind of arm strength and downfield passing threat that Maryland Coach Randy Edsall envisioned for his offense in making the move, and the team has a collection of young talent on the perimeter that complemented Rowe in the win. That included redshirt freshman wide receiver Taivon Jacobs and true freshman tight end Avery Edwards, who combined to catch three of Rowe’s four touchdown passes.

Parrish: Turgeon Not Apologizing for Under Armour Influence

As Maryland basketball has continued its quick climb back onto the national radar, College Park's become a hot spot for college basketball reporters and the program's Under Armour affiliation has become a frequent conversation topic. CBSSports college basketball columnist Gary Parrish visited recently, and today he expanded on his coverage in a video interview. One of his takeaways: Mark Turgeon isn't shying away from admitting Maryland basketball benefits as the flagship Under Armour-branded college basketball program.

"It's a huge deal, and sometimes coaches try to pretend that they're not in an advantageous position on the recruiting trail because of a shoe company affiliation ... What I found interesting is, while like I said, most coaches try to discount that one some level, Mark Turgeon didn't. He said it's a huge advantage and he'll never apologize for it," Parrish said.

Originally a football-centric brand, Under Armour and its founder -- former Maryland football player Kevin Plank (pictured) -- have steadily gained ground on Nike and Adidas in the grassroots basketball world. The Under Armour Association, its travel basketball circuit, was home to more talented teams than ever before this past summer, when five of the top 10 players in the 2017 class played for Under Amour teams.

To the non-hoops junkie, that might be a confusing connection -- high school athlete and major apparel company -- but it's an age when players start to identify themselves with brands. As Under Armour, which this year passed Adidas for the No. 2 spot in the U.S. sportswear market, becomes more popular with teenagers, so will Maryland, which remains the top property in its college hoops fleet.

But while three of the Terps' most recognizable players, Melo Trimble, Robert Carter and Diamond Stone, played for Under Armour grassroots programs in high school, they haven't exclusively recruited Under Armour players; both of its 2016 commitments, Anthony Cowan (Adidas) and Kevin Huerter (Nike), played outside of that umbrella. Two more projected starters this season, Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon, played for Nike programs.

An Edsall wasn't going to cut it in the strongest division in cfb. I'm praying for either Chip Kelly or Jim Tressel... two very diff coaches but two guys who I think could in time give MD a fighting chance.

He's actually done better than I thought he would. The first time I heard him interviewed was after the big win against Miami in his first year. We won the game, and yet while being interviewed on national tv, he harped on our QB (Danny O'Brian - who he turned from the prior year's ACC Rookie of the Year into a guy who couldn't wait to transfer) making what he implied were stupid mistakes. That - and some very unkind words about the supposed lack of discipline under the Fridge regime - had me shaking my head at what at this guy's lack of basic understanding of when to self-edit.

Otoh, I haven't heard stupid comments from him the last couple of years. Either he's learned from his mistakes, or I just haven't been paying attention.

Norm Chow has half the wins in the same amount of time. I wish both he and Edsall to get the boot this week.

Edsall has done much better than Norm Chow, but locals want to keep their native son coach who does not win very often.

Randy likes running QBs.
Norm like stiff robotic QBs.

Maryland President Wallace Loh: "We're in the Big Leagues Now"

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson spoke to reporters already about what he wants in the Terps’ next football -- “an exciting, wide open offense” -- and now president Wallace Loh has given his take on the direction of the program.

“The choice of the next coach is going to be absolutely critical,” Loh said in a meeting with The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board. “The question becomes, what kind of coach do we want? I think [Anderson] said a coach that plays an exciting brand of football -- wide open, that has the personality to relate to the kids, the personality to project himself well (to boosters, media) … You have to have an outsized personality here. It’s not just knowing the X’s and O’s.

“That’s why you have the Jim Harbaugh’s and Urban Meyer’s,” Loh said, referring to two of the biggest names on coaching, who the Terps have to face on a year-to-year basis.

“We’re in the big leagues now. It’s about football; the Big Ten is not about basketball,” Loh continued. “We have significant new revenue stemming in and we’re going to have an indoor facility … We can have a decrepit Byrd Stadium -- you only use Byrd Stadium five times a year or so -- [but] those kids use an indoor facility every single day. What draws them here in the indoor facility, not Byrd Stadium. With the Big Ten Network and that exposure, and of course the connection to Under Armour, I would say that this is one of the most attractive jobs in the country for somebody that’s ambitious and willing to take risks.”

Loh said not all the additional money from the Big Ten will go to athletics -- he already made a commitment to use some of it towards academics -- and didn’t comment specifically on a ballpark salary figure for Maryland’s next coach. There’s other things he needs to factor in before splurging on a coach, including possible ramifications from the appeal of the O’Bannon decision, but he also said Anderson now has the tools to make a big hire. In 2011 when Randy Edsall was hired, he said, that wasn’t the case.

“All I can say is Kevin Anderson is committed to getting the right coach to make us highly competitive in the Big Ten,” Loh said. “We will have to pay a competitive rate. I don’t know what competitive is, but Harbaugh and Urban [Meyer] make seven million dollars a year. And Chip Kelly, who is not doing all that well with the Philadelphia Eagles, made far, far less than that at Oregon.”

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

Four Terps Crack CBSSports.com's Top-100 CBB Player List

Maryland has four players listed among the top-101 college basketball players in the country, according to a list by CBSSports.com.
Topping the list is sophomore point guard Melo Trimble (No. 7). Senior forward Jake Layman cracks the top-50 at No. 49, while both freshman center Diamond Stone (No. 80) and senior shooting guard Rasheed Sulaimon (No. 97) also make the cut.

The Terps are one of just five schools to have four players on the list. Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas -- who barely made the cut with Svi Mykhailiuk at No. 101 -- are the others.

Missing from the list? Robert Carter Jr., who could end up being the second best player on the team this season if he lives up to expectations.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Indiana has three players listed, while Michigan State and Purdue each have two.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.
