We just got our Pippen...way to go EG and TEd. Wizardynasty this is how it's done. EG top 3 GM in the league for sure.

The Consiglieri wrote:I'm a little bit irritated that we didnt trade down, with Knight available, I think we could have swung a nice deal, but I think as has been clear for the last few days, the teams board almost certainly read:

1. Williams

2. Kantner
3. Valunciunas
4. Vesely

Or something of that sort, and then a huge tier drop from there. So I suppose the team didn't like the options available if we did a trade down (probably viewed them as similar value to the 18th pick). I'm glad we'll have the 18th pick anyway.

Hopefully by the end of the coming season we'll know exactly who we have in McGee, will he have made another developmental leap forward and negated the need to get a Kantner? If he does, then we did the right thing tonight, and it's very possible that he will, of course we still need Vesely to get the job done for it to be complete, but in the end, I like what the scouts generally think of Vesely, and I'm just going to have to hope with the rest of us, that the scouts are right, and that the metrics people and posters here are underrating him (although at least the Synergy metrics people apparently found that Vesely did, statistically speaking, play quality defense).

Let's hope we don't make a moronic pick at 18, and hell, maybe buy another pick. This draft has 10-12 guys available between 12-28 or so that really look special. I'd love to steal Norris Cole to be Wall's backup with a late first rounder if possible.

Sympathy out to Ruzious from me as well. I came back from the first vacation I've taken in seven years two weeks ago to discover a layoff notice from my school in the mail. They laid off myself and half the rest of the staff, they're cutting costs, hiring first year teachers on the cheap, and keeping the cheapest teachers on staff. Wonderful way to come back from vacation let me tell you, even better, I had Sinus surgery yesterday (part of the reason my posting has been wack).

Cheer up though, we still got two picks, and as another poster mentioned, the second the lottery screwed us, and freaking rewarded the jazz and the clippercavs, that combined with half of the first tier prospects in the draft staying in school totally screwed us. To me anyway, this draft was all about the big 3, as well as Barnes, Sully, and the stud from Baylor that's clueless. Those 3 being in it would have guaranteed a legit player for us. After they begged off, suddenly a hodgepodge of college guys valued as slot 11 to 21 type talents suddenly, guys that I bash like Marcus Morris, guys like Klay Thompson, and yes even Knight, Walker, and freaking Fredette wouldn't be sniffing top 8-10 land. But they are. To me, that's why Vesely, or Valunciunas had to be the pick, the rest of the options screamed, "you can get these guys in any draft between slots 10 and 20" which is where we'll be drafting for another two years anyway, and considering that the past two drafts feature 3 guys taken exactly in that range (Booker, Seraphin, and the 18 slot this year, and possibly even 34 this year), I don't see the point in swinging for shallow right field with a Marcus Morris or Kawhi Leonard type pick (though I'm curious about Leonard, if he could learn to shoot, he could be scary good), I'd rather swing for the fences. This team absolutely has to hit a home run or grand slam to get in position to win titles/contend consistently, we probably only have this draft, and next, possibly 2 more to find that guy. We aren't getting that player in free agency unless we're absolutely special by the end of '12-'13, and we weren't going to be special with a cautious pick at 6.

I'm glad we decided to swing away, hopefully in time we'll see that we launched it into the upper deck (and not in foul territory), if not, hopefully its as good as another pick would have likely been at 6 (which is what I view most of the other players being speculated about).

Consiglieri, like I said to Ruz, I hope you stay close to the people who care the most. My thoughts on getting laid off are ride the unemployment and really have as good of a time while you feign looking for work or actually do find work. Time is the most valuable possesion we have (Sandburg had some long quote about it--don't want to plagiarize). Being unemployed is really being freed to use your time the way you want (while scrambling like heck to learn how to live on a budget). I for one LOVE having time. As an educator, Consiglieri, I would strongly suggest substitute teaching if you can afford the pay cut.

Back to the Wizards, well if the Synergy people love his defense then that's all there is to it. Great pick, Ernie! :)

I'm with you on Norris Cole. Like him a TON.

I still have a good feeling about this draft. Even after Peter Vecsey being the Wizards pick. :(

im disappointed we didnt trade up but it could be worse. vesely is ok and he is definitely 6'11". he's a good companion piece but we still need that number 2 guy (guess we have to watch baylor next year). i guess we wait till next year on that. with vesely and mcgee there should be a lot of lob passes.

hoping for fareid expecting donatas.
Until Grunfeld goes there is no rebuild.

sorry to all my fellow Wiz fans that wanted someone to replace Dray :-)

Seriously though, I think the Wiz wanted this guy pretty much all along. I think they still believe in Dray, McGee, and even like Book & Seraphin. They wanted a 3 and Im totally down wit it

I think it's a perceived trade value issue, 80s. If the Wizards had picked Knight for some other team, there may have been some interesting, mutually beneficial trade pieces involved.

For instance, the Lakers are dangling Odom and are interested a lot in Knight. Perhaps Washington could have tried to come up with an angle for trading Lewis and Blatche along with Knight to get Odom, filler, and a Laker pick.

Why do i have a feeling that Motie is going to fall to 18 and we will pick him...I am hoping Faried.

If we drafted Vesely and Motie this board will blow up.

I am not against the Vesely pick, i will give him a chance. He is a great energy guy and will at least be able to finish in transition and we know J wall will want to get up and go alot.

Yeah. I wanted Kanter, but I kind of didn't want him because I thought if the franchise took, that they would feel inclined to trade Dray. Now, there's no chance of that happening. :D

But I'm not as down on as Vesely as others are on this board. I think he has the potential to be a good 3&D SF.

The collective wisdom of the board hates the Vesely idea. Hmmm.

not true. I dont remember the McGee hate at all when he got picked. the booker hate was because we moved up to get him when he would of been there in the 2nd round

Yeah, this board - in general - knows what it's talking about. Other than CCJ, I thought McGee was overall a well-received pick. And I wouldn't say Booker was hated. He wasn't everyone's favorite, but there wasn't much to pick from, and people mostly realized that. And I seriously doubt he'll go down as a steal. At best, he'll be a backup tweener forward, imo.

Edit - It looks like Nate was right about the Javale reaction.

I don't remember the reaction, I just remember that the board seemed to not like McGee or Young, I remember people being pissed about both and being really confused about it. At the time I remember Young getting an eval of basically (should go around 8-13) and we got him in the late teens if i remember right, but he just screamed "Good pick" to me. He didnt seem like it till this year, not a bust, but nothing special, but this fast year he finally started putting it together.

McGee got bashed a ton too, and as someone whose lived in the Lake Tahoe/Reno area since '04, i just didn't get it. Because of Nick Fazekis (Im never gonna spell it right) he didnt get a ton of minutes till his last year, but it was always clear that he had a ton of raw potential, athletes for parents, who taught him how to play, great size, great athleticism, not the smartest guy, but a load of potential there, to land all that potential in the late teens, which is historically land of the innumerable busts and one contract and done types. McGee was exactly the right pick, just as there are a load of guys here that are good to target at 18, I hope we go after one of the young up and comers, a hungry cat like Singleton or Faried, or a draft and stash euro with superior talent like Mirotic, or if Motiejunas really wants it, even him (though he and Vesely are way too much risk for my taste combined).

Return to Washington Wizards
