What an ignorant piece of sh*t you are. I know from trying to decipher your posts that you're either a complete idiot, a teenager, or both. But that doesn't excuse this type of garbage.

Lol i have no problem with him being gay. I want him off for his skills. But you know ill be honest you guys open up to players who are in sports or some sort of fame in any way but in reality how many people are gay and you can see it every day.

When guys hold hnd people shake there heads or point fingers or tom boys who dress like guys.

Why not applaud those? I forgot you guys probably dont. My best friends r gay but idc about this because in reality we see it every day.

What maked this different is hes a nba player if he was jist a reg local guy nobody would care. Plz some of you probably mke front of gay people dont lie.

Idc if hes open or not because in the end people will not accept gay male and its sad but please i know you and some have made gay jokes ot had. Friend n made front of some one who talked gay or looked gay.
I want him off cause as a nba player hes fine but plz how mayu people are disgusted about gay people and make front of them

Hypocrits. I know you guys shake your head seeing a gay guy or chuckle for a man dressing like one or have a gf or gitl around and joke about anoyher pdrson being gay. So im a monster:)

I love gay people i work as a hospice and volunteered as a fire fighter and my whole life been loyal:) point is why not clap your hands or cheer when you see gay people on the street? This shouldnt be new .........idk why the praise is coming when this been like this for years and was an ok thing in greek and rome when even he alexander the great was BI.

Society made this thing being gay a bad thing just like ghe race card.

Just gotta wake up like every one here knows some ones gay and they openely show it but get no praize ok lol but whrn a nba player dies it its much different:).

His posts are generally terrible. I just assume he's 12.

No im 21. And my posts are garbage when I don't even post like that any more and when i did it was about.

All I talked about any way was Rudy gay and Josh Smith and another player and thats about it. You wanna bring my thoughts on that its fine but yea im trash lol.

Nobody in here talked about Collins at all and every one in here wanted him gone so don't deny any of that. Just because he opened up and said he was gay doesn't mean its something special. People go trough it every day in the metro on the bus at work or a relative or even your next door neighbor . What i don't understand is this should be a breaking news up how? because an Athlete did it? gotta ask your self why Collins hid it for a while....because alot of people don't like gay people that are male . Im sure you cracked gay jokes bro or did gay comments before don't lie ....we all say it once or twice even tho its wrong so don't play innocent please if you do your lying to your self.

Im glad for Collins but like people act like this is new..........where was a thread for immigration or doctors or surgeons helping people out? I forgot....they weren't famous people involved lol.

IDC about famous people I met Walle he seemed dry and normal I herd about Nicki Manija who is a total jerk and herd Lil Wayne and Bird man are both paranoid A-hoes but guess what people love them ???

Give me a great reason why Collins should be praised?because its on TV? why does TV have to let people know?.

Deivy, replace the word "gay" with "black" and "Jason Collins" with "Jackie Robinson" and maybe you'll begin the understand the thinking of people who think its a big deal.

I highly recommend Bill Simmons podcast with Collins from today.

But the last 5 minutes are absolute MUST-listen for Wizards fans.

Simmons is, of course, asking Collins about the Celtics. The conversation comes to Rondo and how he's apparently an unbeatable savant at Connect Four. Collins then says that Rondo's basketball IQ is similarly off the charts -- the sometimes at the end of practice Doc will let them diagram plays and Rondo was really impressive in that regard.

And then, out of nowhere, Collins volunteers that John Wall is similarly gifted when it comes to the mental aspect of basketball. Simmons is shocked (I think his impression was consistent with lots of people's -- that Wall is a great athlete but that his mental game was far behind).

To me this is huge. Insanely huge. I've been Charlie Brown'd so much by this team that even with Wall's amazing second half, I've still had a bit of doubt about his true ceiling, the sustainability of this production, etc. But to hear from Collins -- unprompted -- that Wall, at 22 is being lauded for his mind the same way the 27 year old Rondo is? Well that's just amazing.

Collins also gives major dap to Okafor for his leadership and intelligence. He and Simmons seem to agree that the organization is headed in the right direction and that the culture change that has taken place was both profound and necessary.

So, that's good stuff.

Actually, truth rarely hurts much at all. In fact, it feels pretty good on a hot summer day. Check it out if your AC is on the blink.

Good find fishercob. Reminds me of Wittman's comments last month when he said John was one of the smartest players he's ever coached.

While I disagree with the lifestyle (person of faith), I respect him for coming out... I believe no-one should need to hide who they are, and should be respected like any other person..

I'm a regular church-goer and I couldn't be happier for Jason. I hope his move encourages other gay players in the four major North American pro sports to come out. [There are plenty.] Person-of-faith isn't a synonym for doesn't like gays.

Anyway, Nate Silver [who is gay, of course] has had a look at whether coming out will affect Collins' NBA career. I'll post a bit of it here, in case someone missed it:
I searched the basketball-reference.com database for players who had a similar season to Mr. Collins’s 2012-13 campaign. Specifically, I looked for players who were between age 33 and 35, who played forward or center, who played in 30 to 50 games, and who started five to 15 times. (Mr. Collins played in 38 games and started nine times for the Wizards and the Celtics last year).

Basically, we’re looking for other aging big men who mostly came off the bench, but who were deemed good enough to start on occasion.

The search identified 18 such players before last season; one of those was Mr. Collins after the 2011-12 season. How many of them played at least some minutes in the N.B.A. the following year?

Eleven of eighteen did, or 61 percent. The odds have been slightly in favor of their extending their careers, in other words — but they are also treated as expendable commodities.

In some ways, that makes Mr. Collins’s decision to come out much braver. He would hardly have been guaranteed a job next year, regardless of his sexual orientation. If N.B.A. teams discriminate against him at all for being gay, that could keep him on the sidelines.

I wonder if Nate Silver's list of 18 players included anybody with such staggeringly bad numbers as Collins. I mean, seriously, his PER is 3.0 and his ORtg is 91 despite the lowest usage rate I've ever seen (7.5%). He may have started 9 games, but he played a grand total of just 384 minutes all season.

If Collins doesn't get a job next year, it'll be a HUGE stretch to blame it on his sexual orientation.

My guess is that Collins will get a job. If he does not, I do not think his sexual orientation will have played any role in that fact.

It's really a non-story at this point. Which is a great thing. It's just not particularly relevant for most people in the context of basketball.

He's such a poor player, he likely won't be in the league next year regardless. However, he will be wisely working with a ghost writer to ready his new book in the offseason, for release in November I am sure.

He's already being courted by a few major publishers. Also the speaking circuit seems to be ready and waiting.....guy has a long post-career and should easily make 15 million+ over the next 5 years if he handles the next 12 months correctly. His hourly speaking fees are being estimated at 10-50k/hour. An advance for his book is expected in the 2-5 million dollar range. Should create an NPO to benefit as well from the speaking circuit/publicity/celebrity support, donate 5% of speaking/book revenue, collect tens of millions in donations, create jobs, help society....and take a lifetime salary.

Good timing, well-executed PR plan....and he can simultaneously lift a huge weight off of his shoulders in his personal life. Guy must be on cloud nine right now.

1. Reveal to your twin brother that you're gay.
2. Get traded to the Wizards.
3. Announce to the world that you're gay
4. Get rich.

I'm pretty sure it happened just like that. Great plan!

I'm glad Collins is happy. Glad he felt like he could come out. Don't care one way or the other about his sexuality. I also don't care about any other player's sexuality. It's irrelevant to the job of playing basketball.

I'm not quite as blown away by the courage of making the announcement. Folks are making a big deal of him being an "active" player, but he's been playing on borrowed time for years now, he doesn't have a contract for next year, and he waited until after the season to make the announcement. Whether he's an active player or not is to be determined.

That said, I'm glad he made the announcement and the collective response has largely been to say a) it doesn't matter; and b) it's good that he felt like this was something he could talk about. Whether he turns out to be an openly/publicly homosexual player next season or not, I think his announcement and the conversation happening now will make it easier for the next guy.

One thing in the "media" response has bugged me -- the intimation that Collins might not get a contract next season because he's gay. He's 34 years old and he's been a terrible player for years. If he doesn't get a contract, the biggest reason will likely be that GMs don't think he's going to help them win games.

Collins' big value add at this point is he can give you 6 fouls a game. He may be worth the Vet minimum for a team in Dwight Howard's division for this reason alone. He knows how to foul effectively. You don't really have to worry about him fouling out early, as that would be his role - fouling Bigs who can't hit free throws. I would love to see him in the league next year, but just don't see that need on the Wizards.

I think the Wiz will resign Collins. If he wants a future in advocacy, he can make connections in the politcal arena. Moreover, the coaching staff and management love him, and he'd be a good mentor to a young big we draft with our pick.

Not a very good effort by Silver.

Some of the comps from my similarity system:

- Fabricio Oberto, 34 -- played 9 games the following season and was finished
- Dennis Awtrey, 33 -- last season
- Jamaal Magloire, 33 -- last season
- Oberto, 35 -- last season
- Felton Spencer, 34 -- last season
- Chris Dudley, 34 -- appeared in 3 more seasons (just 3 games his final year)
- Jason Collins, 33 -- he played this year
- Aaron Williams, 34 -- 2 more seasons
- Randy Breuer, 33 -- last season
- Danny Schayes, 34 -- 5 more seasons
- Lasalle Thompson, 35 -- last season
- Greg Dreiling, 34 -- last season
- Juwan Howard, 34 -- still going 5 years later
- Vin Baker, 33 -- 1 more season
- Terry Davis, 33 -- last season
- Dave Robisch, 34 -- last season
- Mark Madsen, 33 -- last season
- Sean Marks, 35 -- last season
- Chris Dudley, 35 -- 2 more seasons
- Tom Gugliotta, 35 -- last season

Including Collins as a similar to himself, that's 8 of the 20 "similars" who played in at least one more season. So, that'd be about a 40% chance of getting a contract next season, not the 61% Silver suggests.

My gut feeling before the announcement was that he had a 50/50 chance of playing next year.
