Re: 2025 Draft Thread
A player I like for us if we can add another top 10-ish pick...
6-10 PF Asa Newell from Georgia. A physical 4 who I like next to Sarr if he's our 5 long term.
NBA DRAFT ROOM: Mock Draft 2025
#10 Spurs Asa Newell PF – Georgia – HT: 6-10 – WT: 220 – WING: NA – Fr – Newell is a hyper-active big forward with springs in his legs. Works hard on the court and does all the dirty work. Is very efficient with his touches and can hit the 3-ball. His stock is moving up.
Draft Notes:
Newell is a big time athlete at the power forward position who immediately passes the eye test when you see him move up and down the floor.
He’s long, explosive, fast and agile and gets off the ground in a hurry. His skills are still developing but he clearly has a NBA level frame.
Like most young bigs he’ll have to continue to expand his offensive game. At this point he lives in the paint and does his damage attacking the rim, on putbacks and scoring in transition.

Big time competition for a top 5 pick -
Utah
Toronto
Charlotte
Everyone else seems clearly a step above us - Detroit, Portland, etc. Utah will be hard to beat for that top spot.

All three teams are better than us. Utah will likely trade markenan and other players to tank better; they are our biggest competition.

Re: 2025 Draft Thread
Rutgers playing Wagner now on Big 10 Network. Ace Bailey out injured in practice. Team did not share details of the injury.
Dylan Harper looks bigger then 6’6”
Summerville listed at 6’10” 275 for Rutgers looks interesting.

He looks like a lottery pick if that's his typical game.

Quite impressive first game…
It seems he is at least a legit 6’5” PG…He and Bub together could be a nice backcourt.

It’s insane Rutgers got both of them, but happy to see a random school with some elite talent. They should be a lot of fun to watch this season.

Re: 2025 Draft Thread
I'm interested to see how Maryland's Derik Queen performs Friday.
He had 22 points and 20 rebounds in his freshman debut, albeit against poor competition.
Queen does not possess NBA athleticism. He reminds me of Alan "Big Sauce" Williams. I think he is a second round pick, eventually.

Coming from BYU, definitely looks like a Jazz guy. They had another Russian, AK47, not too long ago.

Dude is looking legit.
Early, but I like a top 4 right now for the Wizards of Flagg, Ace, Egor, Harper...

Re: 2025 Draft Thread
I thought Shawn Respert would take over the league so I don't really trust my scouting eye, but Harper looks like a future Harden to me.

Yeah Harper looks like a stud. Things can change, season just started, but looks to me like as long as we end up top 4 we're in good shape. They each appear to have top pick talent, and could be fit in well with our current core 4.

Re: 2025 Draft Thread
Another player I like if we can acquire another 1st round pick is Donnie Freeman.
NBA Draft Room currently mocked at 18
6-9 PF Syracuse (Fr)
Draft Notes:
Freeman is fundamentally sound, has a strong, athletic frame and is on an awesome trajectory and improving rapidly. He’s got a smooth mid range game with nice form on his jumper.
Wiry, strong and athletic, Freeman has the physical tools for the NBA game.
He’s a versatile all around forward who defends multiple positions, has good defensive instincts and high basketball IQ.
Plays an efficient offensive game and has good touch on his jumper. Sees the floor well and has good passing vision for a big.
Its still so early... Draft Room has Newell at 10 & Freeman at 18, while Hoops Intellect has them at 21 & 25.

My question, and I almost feel like it deserves its own thread, is what is the appropriate balance
between totally tanking and not tanking at all. You can have the worst record and still not get a
very high pick. Going that route could hurt the development of the players you already have.
Being awful doesn't guarantee anything except being awful. Or as PIF would point out, high
picks are no guarantee of getting good players even as they do give you better opportunities
for the best players. That said, I think 10 years from now, it will probably be the consensus
that in certain years, like last year with Wemby, there is a pretty clear choice. Maybe that
is a more of a rare circumstance than the promoters of tanking would readily concede.
Would Zion still go before Ja in a redo with perfect foresight? Of course, they went 1-2,
so you still had to be bad and have lotto luck to draft either.
I think the very early returns of our 1st year players looks reasonably promising. This hints
that we could do okay without necessarily getting the #1#1.
But It will be interesting to see, after 3-5 years, what order our 3 rookies would rank
among themselves. But this wouldn't tell you which order you would have had to draft
them in in order to get them.

There is virtually no difference in lotto odds whether you are the worst team, the second worst team, or the third worst team. All 3 have the exact same 52% odds of landing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th draft pick.
The worst team cannot fall below the 5th pick. The second-worst team has a 80% chance of picking in the top 5 and a 20% chance of falling to 6. The third-worst team has a 66% chance of picking in the top 5, a 26% chance of picking 6th, and a negligible 7% chance at picking 7th.
So basically, there only real difference between the bottom 3 teams is that the worst team is sure to fall no lower than the 5th pick whereas the other two teams have a fairly small chance of falling to 6.
With those odds, I'm totally fine trying to win some games and boost morale if it means we finish 3rd from last instead of dead last. Even if we move up to 4th from last, it's not really that big of a deal. The lotto odds start getting significantly worse after that.

Re: 2025 Draft Thread
that makes sense. I had given up trying to remember the latest tweaks to the lotto procedure.
So basically if your goal is a high pick, you don't want to rise above 3rd worst.
