Ironically, I chose not to fly in to Memphis today. I had a death in my family and the funeral is in MS, tomorrow.
My sister's probably landing in Memphis right about now.
Not that has to do with anything, but just would have been ironic to be in Memphis the day of the Pau trade. And for Kwame, a guy I've (briefly) met.
Irony.

I'm with those who think this trade is ridiculous. A near-20-10 big just entering the prime of his career for an expiring contract, two late first rounders, and a mediocre prospect at a position where you already have two better young players? I absolutely refuse to believe that they couldn't have gotten something better.
On the plus side, it's too funny that Navarro is all alone in Memphis now.

Wow, this is why the NBA sucks compared to the NFL. The same rich teams get richer. The same big market teams always get all the damn breaks. It sucks to be a fan of one of the non-Golden NBA teams.
Let's just be honest for a minute, do we really think that's the best deal they could have got? The Bulls could have gave them young talent like Deng and Gordon who also has expiring contracts.
Also I think the Lakers are now a real bad team defensively and they won't make it past the second round of the players. Gasol is a know choker and bad defender. Duncan, Dirk, and Boozer always light him up.

I have to assume that's the plan.
Also, I don't think Memphis got that raw of a deal. Philly didn't get much more for Iverson. The KG deal wasn't the boon for Minny that everyone thought it would be. Heck, the only reason why Seattle got as much as they did for Ray Allen was because Ainge was desperate to make a move.
I wonder how this affect Kidd's value on the Market?
Further, could this be a prelude to a Odom+filler for Kidd deal?
Nets trade: Jason Kidd and Jason Collins
Nets receive: Odom, Navarro, and Swift
Grizzlies trade: Gasol, Navarro, and Swift
Grizzlies receive: Collins, Kwame, Crittenton, Ariza, and LA picks
Lakers trade: Odom, Kwame, Crittenton, Ariza and 2 picks
Lakers receive: Pao Gasol and Jason Kidd
TRADE ID 4458185
Bynum/Mihm
Gasol/Turiaf
Walton/Radman
Kobe/Vujacic
Kidd/Fisher/Farmar

nate, I think you're absolutely, positively correct.nate33 wrote:The only rational explaination is that there is an under the table deal going on.
Stern must have promised them the #1 pick in the draft in exchange for this trade. Nothing else makes sense.
Boston/LA finals makes hand over fist money.
Smoking gun points to Stern.
That or as I said in the LAL forum, Dr. Jerry Buss has hooked up Memphis' GM Chris Wallace up with a lifetime pass to the Champagne Room at the Platinum Club. The hoochies belong to him no matter who they're with.
Buss might have secretly offered up Phil Jackson's squeeze, his daughter Jeanie, to pull this deal off.
There's more to this deal than what's being reported.

Iverson was 31 at the time with 33,000 minutes under his belt. KG was 31 with 36000 minutes under his belt.
Gasol is 27 with 17000 minutes under his belt. That's a HUGE difference. Gasol should play at a high level for another 6-8 years. Iverson and KG have 2-3 years left.

*sigh*
I'm not gonna get too much into the merits of the AJ for Gasol thing, which was done to death in other threads and is now a moot point.
But a little part of me wonders if Abe Polin's obsession with loyalty forbade Grunfeld from talking to Memphis about moving AJ, or if EG had a chance to make something happen and didn't get it done.
