I see re-signing everyone to big deals as a major step backwards. I don't see any room for growth outside of Beal/Wall. Otto also has a significant contract. He needs to be able to contribute next year.

Which is why I don't see us re-signing Ariza. I think he is going to be out of our price range with Otto available to step in as the starter. If we re-sign Ariza, as good as he has been for us, I'll be disappointed and I won't like where we are headed.

which is why we'll move Web--that's 20 minutes a night for Otto minimum
Ariza isn't going anywhere at this point. Neither is Gortat.
I think Ariza will be moveable at any point. At worst if his production dips we just throw a first in with him for an expiring if we think we have a shot at a free agent.

Do you take either Jason Thompson or Carl Landry for Webster?

I'm fine with re-signing Gortat to a 3yr deal, but re-signing Ariza would be a mistake.

I just did the canvas of bigs with similar contracts to Webster... just has me a bit worried.

Agree on Gortat, even if there's a 4th year (hopefully only partially guaranteed).
I've gone back and forth on Ariza. First, I wanted him traded last summer for bench help (my favorite idea was Ariza to Minny for DWill and either Ridnour or Barea). Then he blew up this season and I wanted to keep him. And then I looked at the cap numbers again and felt it might still be prudent to let him walk.
But he's a bonafide 3&D guy that can guard any team's best scorer (see how he shut down Augustin after the first couple of games) and he doesn't shrink in big spots (see his playoff shooting). If we can get him to do an oversized 2 year deal, that would be ideal. But I wouldn't be opposed to a 3 year deal for him.
I know folks are worried about 2016, but how many stars actually sign somewhere with pure outright cap space? Boston's Big Three came about through trades. The Lakers got Gasol by trade, as did NYK with Melo and LAC with CP3. Even when the Miami trio came together it was technically by S&T (although for picks, not players). Other than Amare a couple years ago and Dwight this past summer, how many true stars change teams by signing for pure cap space?
My point is this: say we fast-forward to 2016, Durant actually wants to come here, and we have guys like Gortat/Ariza who still have a bit left in the tank and a year left on their deals (assuming they sign 3 year deals this summer). Doing a S&T with OKC where they get something back wouldn't be out of the question IMO. So just because a couple of guys may end up with deals that go beyond 2016 doesn't completely kill our flexibility IMO.

This is what I was trying to argue in the Kevin Durant to Washington thread. If Durant wanted to come here to make a big 3 with Beal and Wall, there would be a way to figure it out. That's how it's always worked with big threes and other transactions that you talked about.
I don't really wanna re-sign Ariza for real big money and I think that's what he is going want, because I want Otto to get minutes. People say okay then trade Webster, but I don't know if anyone is going to take him on that contract. I hope someone does if that's the case. I just want Otto to get the opportunity to get more minutes and show what he's got as the #3 overall pick.

If the Wizards were offered Love and Martin for Beal and Nene, do the Wizards do that?

To be real, I dunno. The Nene for Love part is obviously an easy choice, you're taking Love over Nene every time. I don't know if I'd ever wanna give up either Beal or Wall when we've built such a nice backcourt with the two of them, chemistry and all. At the same time though, if you had asked me if I would include Beal in a trade before his playoff performance I probably would have said yeah...
Martin is a nice player, but he is 31. I can't say I'd be mad if we got Love though.

Draft night bonanza:
OKC trades: Perkins, Adams, Dallas #1 pick
OKC receives: Nene
Thunder sacrifices some future for the massive ugprade from Perkins to Nene. Adams isn't in the playoff rotation and Perkins is getting a whopping 25 mpg. This move is an effort to stabilize an elite franchise that seems to have hit some trouble. Nene strikes me as an excellent fit with this group.
Minnesota trades: Kevin Love
Minnesota receives: Bradley Beal, Kendrick Perkins (exp), Dallas #1
Perhaps with the help of Love and his agent, Minnesota avoids the risk of losing Love for nothing. Beal is the best (i.e. most valuable in NBA circles) player on a rookie contract that Minnesota can hope to land for Love. At 20, they can control him for the next 7 seasons. They get a juicy expiring and a mid-late first.
Wizards trade: Beal, Nene
Wizards receive: Love, Adams
Sell high! Wizards get their a young superstar in Love and a 20-year old center who had a very strong rookie campaign and could end up being a stud rim protector. The Wiz could retain Gortat and bring Adams along slowly as a 15-18 mpg backup. They could also let Gortat and Ariza walk and have a ton of cap room to play with going forward.
Option A:
Gortat/Adams
Love/Gooden?
Ariza/Otto
MLE/Webster
Wall/Miller
Option B
Adams/Gooden
Love/???
Otto/???
Webster/????
Wall/Miller

This I would do. I'm a Steven Adams fan. I also think it works reasonably well for everyone involved.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXVII
Jordan Adams could be better than Beal within a year, imo, and he likely doesn't go till late first/early second. But realistically, the organization seems committed to building around the Wall/Beal combo. If I was running the team, I'd probably trade Beal, because I think his trade value is likely unreasonably high. He could certainly turn out to be a star, but so can a lot of players who have a lot less trade value.

I don't think it works for OKC. They need center, not PF in this simulation. And if they trade Perkins I'm sure Steven Adams stays.
Usually you don't remove 2 guys at the same position at once.

Just took a shower and thought about this trade... I'd do it. lol
PG: Wall
SG: Martin
SF: Ariza
PF: Love
C: Gortat
That's a nice group right there.
