Seems like they blew an opportunity - considering the team picking right after them traded down to 27 and got a 5th rounder plus... a 2019 1st round pick. It seemed pretty clear that Payne was a reach at 13. The definition of filling a need over BPA. Gruden's observations were telling - he said NOTHING about taking the best player. He said they picked him because they have to defend Elliot and Barkley for years to come. On the positive side, Payne has upside since he's just 20.

wasn't a fan of that--particularly sense vita vea looks like he'll be able to lock the position down until his wheels fall off, sounds like they didn't do their due diligence to make sure he'd be there for their pick, Vea was probably worth trading up to get

compounded the mistake by getting meh value at the slot too instead of trading back, looked like they had a position of need they were focused on and just went for it, don't think they had BPA in mind

Still, when you're intentionally not going BPA, the smart thing to do is trade down - Ignoring value means that other teams are adding more talent than you are. And the Skins are already average at best in pure talent. Intentionally falling behind in talent is a bad strategy. And when Bruce Allen is making the football decisions, you're already playing from behind.
