Faust and Breunig are also gone.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ ... ments.html

One day after Maryland introduced Mark Turgeon as its new men's basketball coach, the Terps' 2011 recruiting class dwindled from three members to zero.

City shooting guard Nick Faust and Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) point guard Sterling Gibbs both said Thursday that they were granted releases from their letters of intent. Maryland’s third class of 2011 signee, German forward Martin Breunig, requested to be released from his letter of intent Wednesday, according to InsideMDSports.com
.

Thanks, Jordan Williams. Actually, it's on Gary Williams if one big man going pro sinks a whole program. Then again, I like this comment:

At this point I could really care less about Faust or Gibbs... sure, would be nice to have them, but we are already loaded up in the back court. We need Bruenig though, even if he is more of a developmental player, we need his size.

I have faith that Turgeon will get us the recruits we need, it could take a couple years though. I just want this coming season to be less painful then it appears its going to be. There has to be some under the radar or atleast somewhat serviceable big men left, time to take a flyer on one or two of them... its not like we do not have plenty of room for them on the bench if they dont work out.

The Terps already have Stoglin, Howard, and Mosely returning. They need some bigs. I hope there are still some unsigned Juco's or even some freakishly talented D2s or NAIAs that can qualify. Guys over 6'7" with athleticism. That and transfers.

Turgeon needs some ballers.
The Wizards shoukd have drafted Derik Queen

I told you so :banghead:

Faust is expected to recommit once the coaching staff is announced.

He's just waiting to see if his boy Bino Ranson is retained...and he will be.

Edit: And potentially losing Nick Faust would be huge. You could make the argument that he has more natural ability than Howard, Stoglin and Mosley combined.

It's Gibbs that doesn't matter. They definitely need Faust. And just because Faust and Breunig were released from their letters of intent - doesn't mean they're gone - as Wizardpride alluded to.

JTIII and the rest of the poachers who raid DMV just got a little more tense. Ranson and Hill together communicate to area coaches that UM is the top dog in the area. No local school can offer more than Maryland.

This is a huge hire for the Terps. With Hill/Bino/Spinelli that's a three headed recruiting monster, with Turge being pretty good too.

Now if the Wizards can get a good pick tonight, this would be a great day for local hoops!

All depends on who they get though, big schools like Georgetown, Syracuse, other schools who recruit this area hard probably have commitments up through 2012.

They should focus on Nate Britt from Gonzaga (my alma mater). I think he's with team takeover, not sure. Gatorade player of the year and only a sophomore.

:D

His connections with DCA are obvious, and he's also friendly with Keith Stevens, the head man of Team Takeover, who used to coach him. He's a huge name in the area, and would be revolutionary for Maryland's recruiting of DC and PG County if only for the massive change it would signal in philosophy. In reality, Hill will help much more than that; Maryland will be a player for almost any recruit who comes through Assault, and probably most who come through Takeover, too. (If you're wondering who those are: Nate Britt and BeeJay Anya would be good starting spots.)

I still say Gibbs was more important. We have no real PG and the offense really struggled from it last year. Now that Williams is gone, expect a lot of Caner-Medley-esque 30 shot, 12pt loss performances from Stoglin next year.

We also didn't have any consistent outside shooting....and that's something that Faust will provide.

Bottomline: Faust is just flat out more talented than Gibbs...and the rankings reflect it.

I totally disagree with you. Howard is a pure PG and showed a lot of ability and leadership last season. And Stoglin - at his size - is a combo guard. Yes, he's more scorer than distributor, but he can be a scoring PG. Faust is simply a far better rated prospect than Gibbs, and the team needs a scorer like him. Obviously, they have a gigantic hole up front with Williams gone.

Justin Anderson switches commitment to Virginia
Montrose Christian small forward Justin Anderson made official today what had been rumored for weeks, switching his commitment from Maryland to Virginia.

Anderson, a five-star prospect and the No. 23 player in the 2012 class according to Rivals.com, revealed his decision in a news release issued today.

“The Cavaliers were always my second choice behind Maryland,” said Anderson in a statement released by Montrose Christian this morning. “Also, my family lives in Virginia. After the departure of Coach [Gary] Williams and Coach [Robert] Ehsan it just feels like the right fit.”

Anderson, who averaged 14 points for the Mustangs this year, pledged to the Terps in March. The 6-foot-7 junior was also recruited by Duke, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

On the night Williams retired, Anderson told The Baltimore Sun that he was “still committed to the University of Maryland,” but planned to “wait and see” who the school hired before making his final decision. Mustangs coach Stu Vetter said in the school’s statement that “Mark Turgeon wanted to begin recruiting him, [but] Justin and his family decided to conclude the process. We look forward to developing a relationship with the new coaching staff at the University of Maryland.”

Maryland is involved with several other highly ranked small forwards in the 2012 class, including Amile
Jefferson of Philadelphia and Arnaud Moto of Episcopal High in Alexandria, Va.

Andrew Harrison, PG, Houston Defenders- How good is Harrison? Well, he thoroughly dominated Showtyme Elite and led the Defenders to a blowout win in a game that featured plenty of pregame trash talk. The thing is, he did so without needing to score a single bucket. Instead he abused defenders off the dribble getting into the lane at will and setting up teammates for easy buckets. Later in the day, he knocked home some deep jumpers, continued to get into the lane. A physically impressive kid, he creates with or without screens, sees the floor and isn't going to give up his top ranking without a fight.

Aaron Harrison, SG, Houston Defenders- While his brother Andrew is ranked just a little bit higher, Aaron is a five-star prospect himself and was killing it on Sunday. Playing the point himself for stretches, he was much better than expected off the dribble and used his ability to escape defenders to the left or right to free himself and then convert on ridiculous finishes over defenders. A shooter as well, he was canning them from long range. He and his brother both saw head coaches from Maryland, Kansas, Texas A&M, TCU, SMU, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Villanova and many other places in the crowd to see them.

Another Houston Defender having a pretty good day was Shaquille Cleare. Having claimed Maryland as his leader, it wasn't a surprise to see Mark Turgeon. stalking him from the bleachers of Duncanville High

Malone: New Staff A "Game-Changer"

INDIANAPOLIS __ For D.C. Assault director Curtis Malone and his staff, it was strange seeing Dalonte Hill, one of their former players and coaches, wearing a University of Maryland shirt as he sat amongst the thicket of college recruiters in the stands at the Adidas Invitational.

It wasn't the fact that Hill had been a member of Kansas State’s staff for five years before landing at Maryland in May that made it an odd sight; it was foreign, rather, because of the relationship – or lack thereof – between the powerhouse AAU program and Maryland’s basketball program since Assault’s inception in 1993.

Never a fan of the grassroots basketball evolution that shifted a slab of importance from high school programs and coaches to their AAU counterparts, Gary Williams declined to build personal relationships with most AAU coaches – most notably Malone, whose program has produced countless college stars and several NBA players, making him one of the major players in the talent-gorged Washington, D.C.-area basketball scene.

There were years of chatter about a cold war between Williams and Malone, whose program has featured prized recruits like DerMarr Johnson, Keith Bogans, Jeff Green, Michael Beasley, Nolan Smith, Joe Forte and Quinn Cook, among many others. Such talk was over-stated, Malone said, adding that he’s never told a player not to go to Maryland.

“Me and Gary never really had a problem. We just never really knew each other,” he said. “I don’t get as involved in the recruiting as everybody thinks.”

That changed a bit a couple of years ago, when Malone joined then-Assault/DeMatha star Quinn Cook on a visit to College Park and the two sat down and had an extended chat, squashing whatever discomfort existed.

“He’s a great guy,” said Malone, who along with Assault vice president Damon Handon, has built one of the most recognizable names on the ever-growing grassroots basketball circuit.

“I had always respected him as a coach.”

Under Williams, Malone said, Maryland simply hadn’t gone hard after many of those players, and when the Terps did so, they were sometimes late to the party. Arinze Onuaku (Syracuse) and Dante Cunningham (Villanova), for instance, had already become highly sought prospects by the time Maryland’s staff began to pursue them in earnest as rising high school seniors.

The lone players with Assault ties to sign with Maryland – Travis Garrison (2004) and Lonny Baxter (1998) only played for Malone’s program sporadically. The Terps came close to landing DeMatha star Austin Freeman in the Class of 2007, Malone said, but Georgetown won a close battle because Freeman’s family shared a strong bond with Hoyas assistant Kevin Broadus.

“We’ve never really had a player go to Maryland. Maryland’s been involved with a couple kids but none of them ever chose Maryland. I just never thought that the Maryland staff spent a lot of time watching and recruiting our kids,” he said. “And they probably thought that they couldn’t get some of them.”
