Re: Official Wizards Draft Thread: Version 2.0
I'm pleasantly surprised Ernie made this pick. It took guts. He could be a total bust, but you take a chance on a legit 7 footer with a 7'6.5 wingspan who bulked up to 240, has strong legs, tremendous speed for his size. The only physical negative is an ordinary first step.
Now, it's up to the coaches to work on the mental parts.
Good gutsy pick.
I bet he would have taken Speights if he was there.

To be honest the Wizards picked a player who looks like a bust. Maybe they saw something but he looks really weak and unskilled.

Granted, my only knowledge of McGee is from Draft Express, but I don't see this as a particularly bad pick. The guy averaged 20 points, 10 boards and 4 blocks per 40 minutes as a sophomore. His PER was 24. He's freakishly long and reasonably athletic.
Yeah, he's a project, but that's the only way you get big men this late in the draft.

Well I'm sure Javale can team up with Andray and throw some nice parties at H20 and Love nightclub.
That's about all Javale will be good for.

We need immediate impact of every kind. WTF is Ernie doing with all these project players.
Most of all we need solid defenders. Haywood is our only big who can defend and Blatche when he feels like it.
This is lame. We didn't get better.

I would like to take this time to propose that those of you who were on the fence about this organization needing a change, take a step over to the dark side and fire everybody....starting with EFJ.

Wow. People are really negative on this pick. I'm surprised.
If EG decided a long-term PF with star potential was our most important position, then this makes a lot of sense to me.
Arthur could turn into a David West type surprise (I even advocated drafting him recently), you could easily argue he's another tweener like AJ and won't ever be the dominant big man who can defend the league's best PFs when the chips are down. A regular season wonder; a playoff disaster.
That leaves you someone like McGee who is at the position we need most (Chalmers isn't with Gil, Stevenson and AD, Greene isn't with Butler). And he has the most upside.
So what, he can't help us this year. Show me a rookies or even a sophomore who CAN, and who wasn't drafted in the top 5. It's really unusual.
I'm willing to let this guy grow over the next couple years. His mere presence may light a fire under Blatche's ass, since he's no longer the "new guy with high potential". He'll be the "guy who better start producing or in a couple years he could find himself replaced".

I think this pick is traded. McGhee stated that he would not fall past 19. Perhaps some traded up for him?

On one hand, we are trying to become a better playoff team, but on the other hand are we playing for 3-4 years down the road when our window will be closed? EG needs to explain this one. I'm baffled just like I was with Pech, but I didn't know much about him. JavMac seemed like a late first.
Exactly......and Pech is no Dirk Nowitski!! McGee will get ZERO run for the Wizards in 2008-2009. I'm with the poster who said Mario Chalmers would have been a better pick here!!

14 & 7 in a weak conference. Getting abused by 6-7 & 6-8 C's on a regular basis...I'm not impressed.

Saer Sene part deux, only he's not as good.Ruzious wrote:I'm pleasantly surprised Ernie made this pick. It took guts. Ruzious, this guy blows. He will suck in the D-League.
This is easily the worst selection of the night for any team. Jason Thompson's way better.

People aren't feeling this pick because of what some of the websites were saying about him and that Nevada isn't shown on the tube very often. It also sucks that we have to wait 2-3 years to find out if this guy can play. I'm not giving up on this guy. Hell maybe he'll be special, but you usually don't find a special big this late. Patrick O'Bryant anybody?
