Nicely constructed list. I'll add a few when I get the chance. If only because this is the day Randy died, I'd start by adding Crazy Train.

thanks BA - I'd like to think I know a little although I'll be the first to
admit I also have my biases. I posted the list to my FB page and the
first comment I got on an omission was Keith Richards. I'd say he was/is
more of a rock icon than a guitar god. He's not horrible or anything but
he isn't at the level re guitar mastery of most of the guys I listed IMO.

I expected the first comment to say Jimmy Page who almost certainly
ought to be included. I was always partial to Babe I Gonna Leave you
as a Page (LZ) song.

Actually, I would say most notably missing is Eruption by Van Halen. You can hate on Van Halen (and many do), but perhaps two of the songs you listed came close to changing the face of guitar in the last half century as Eruption did. Of course, Page was missing. As is Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Lightin' Hopkins, and most notably Robert Johnson. Personally, in the field of rock, my favorite guitar songs have always been: "Crazy Train," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "Bulls on Parade," "Texas Flood," "Eruption," "Johnny B. Goode," "War Pigs," "Sleep Walk," "Lemon Song," hmmm more to come. In modern times, Andy McKee's "Driftin'" and Hella's "Biblical Violence" would be on my lists... Hmm thinking...

Not a big EVH fan but he would qualify whether I like him or not.

Robert Johnson absolutely should be on the list

also Elmore James

Chuck Berry

Johnny Winter

the songs I chose, again, were not necessarily meant to be their signature
songs - more like personal favs -also when I first started the list, I was looking
for shorter songs thinking of getting as many songs as possible onto a CD,
in a audibly reasonable format (Mp3 ain't audibly reasonably). Otherwise
I would have made some different choices like VoodooChile...

T-Bone is one I should have considered more strongly

good list BA -

I don't have any Segovia or Pass - but they are both worthy.

I should have included Kotke and I thought I did include Atkins
but if not I should have

Tough to pick the signature song for either but in guitar icons you'd have to include neo-folk revival fingerpicker John Fahey, and fretboard tapping magician Stanley Jordan.

Also I think you'd have to put on the list that poncey little punk in his hooker clothes, here upstaging everybody at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison:

Was it Mike Epps who made that joke, "Prince was a little too much for us in Detriot. When he came out in panties singin', 'Maybe I'm just like my mother,' we were screamin' 'Maybe you a little too much like your mother'"? YouTube Kevin Smith talking about Prince. Great stuff (as are his podcasts). But yeah, the guy can play -- which makes you mad knowing he has a vault full of albums he won't release.

Speaking of comedy...

My friend just saw a surprise appearance of Volta in a 200 person venue, in Atlanta. Says it's the greatest show he's ever seen in his life.

Btw, Jim, you seem to keep overlooking Buddy Guy. Buddy created the whole electric blues revival in Chicago. Eric Clapton and SRV both called him the greatest guitarist on the planet (and Clapton played with the Yardbirds). And both indicated their style is a poor imitation of Buddy Guy -- their words, not mine. Check the Junior Wells clip I posted a page or so back -- featuring Buddy Guy. Then, YouTube the songs Stone Crazy; The First Time I Met the Blues; and Buddy's version of Sweet Home Chicago. Ironically, I'm in Chitown and can't post clips.

See, I think I give more credit for innovation than actual playing. For instance, of course Randy Rhodes was better than Iommi, but then without one the other would have never come around. Iommi and Fripp invented heavy metal. So, while Dimebag may have played more complicated versions of iommi's style, it's still his creation. Same with Buddy Guy and SRV. SRV was probably the greatest blues guitarist in history. But, he learned off the back of Buddy Guy. That's why I give greater points to Blind Blake (or Eddie Van Halen) than Steve Vai. Just my take.

A) Volta just did the same surprise show at the 9:30. Sucks to not be home for it.

B) I sold one of Buddy Guy's first guitars (signed by him) today.

Coincidence or is the Matrix broken?

Fleet Foxes new album leaked yesterday. Needless to say, it is amazing. I'd say it is better than the debut.
