The only issue I would have with Arenas faking an injury so Nick could get more minutes is if he actually lied to the coach and the medical team. I'd rather he just tell Flip not to play him so Nick can get more minutes. My guess is that this was a preseason "injury" and that everyone on the team knew it was "fake."

If it was Gil doing this completely on his own, I think it's still incredibly minor. Easily handled by Flip just telling him...talk to me next time, don't tell me you're sore when you're okay.

Sorry for violating the shrine but since it's only being talked about here, I'll add my piece.

I don't know how you can put a positive spin on this. Not saying it was terrible, but it does throw a bit of water on the "Gil is coming back a mature player." He's disrespecting the coaching staff, drawing attention to himself in a way that he really needs not to, and sending out all kinds of mixed signals.

I honestly have no idea how the Gil situation (and this news makes me want to call it a "situation" again) is going to play out this year.

I agree it alone is minor...but should Flip really have to tell a 28 year old man, "Gil, don't lie about your health, mkay? Or if you do, keep it a secret and don't tell the press and make me look bad."

Is this how low the expectations on this board are for professional behavior from Gil?

Haterade in full effect.

GTFO with that BS. You know damn well Gilbert was NOT disrespecting the coaching staff. You are a clown and you are disrespecting this thread with your nonsense, BEAT IT.

Well now that he missed this game, I'm guessing he's playing tomorrow? I'm gonna go be there!

the piece in the post that reported that it was all faked
said he would play tomorrow.

I was actually thinking he was holding out on playing
in front of the home folks until he had to. For reasons
I don't quite understand but am not overly concerned
about.

Glad if it isn't where he lied to the coaches and he didn't sit out so he doesn't play in front of the home fans. I don't think it is the best time to fake an injury and a little annoyed if it was all open in the organization that someone didn't recommend he take the 2nd non home opener off instead of the home opener. Don't know why Gil needed to get him quoted saying hey I faked an injury though....

I like it. He lets Nick Young get some minutes and confidence. He lets Wall have the spotlight to himself for the first home game. And Gil gets himself some rest.

If he didn't come out and say this, all we'd be talking about today, and all the media would be talking about is how his knee is giving out again. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

This worries me for 3 reasons.

1 is that I dont care at all but I know others will use this to paint him as something bad so that sucks.

2 is that its very possible that Flip wouldve started NY yesterday anyways but I guess he would play more without Gil.

3 is that I think Gil had been feeling good and was becoming more aggessive on the court but with how well we played yesterday, I think he will try to fit in again and go back to being a role player which sucks. Again, I dont want Gil chucking and I love us to be an all around unselfish passing team but we need him to score when the season starts and we need him to stay aggressive.

The funniest thing about this is you dont even know whats true. Gil couldve truly just sat out as a vet wanting to miss one Preseason game and said that he did it for NY just to play around but everyone will take it serious. You dont know what to believe with Gil but I think its harmless, atleast in the Preseason. I just fear the media & fans ripping him for undermining the Coach & Orginization which will make Gil go back to playing like a role player again and I dont want that at all

I'm surprised most of you are defending Gilbert, it's like he can do no wrong in the eyes of some of you.

What was so wrong about this? He sat out a meaningless game?

Well, now he's been fined by the team.

From BF, sorry, no link....

Gilbert Arenas' intentions were probably good when he said he "faked" an injury to get Nick Young a chance for more playing time in last night's Wizards preseason win over the Hawks. However, his coach wasn't amused that he lied to him to make it all happen. In a radio appearance on ESPN 980, Flip Saunders said that Arenas has been fined for his comments. He didn't disclose the amount of the fine, saying it was a personnel matter.

Arenas reportedly apologized for his actions, according to SB Nation D.C.'s Sean Fagan, who is at practice. He admitted that he lied to Saunders about the extent of his injury.

Saunders is currently addressing the media out at the Verizon Center.

This is the first time Gil has looked like his old self. He's clearly enjoying his new teammates. A few buzzer beaters and no doubt we'll start seeing the old Hibachi. Can't wait.

We know it's just Gilbert being Gilbert, but that comment makes for yet another distraction that he and the team just don't need - even if it is just a minor distraction.

This is the passage I liked:

TruthAboutIt wrote:“You know one thing I think everyone has to understand some … Gil, in the two years I’ve been here, has been the easiest guy I’ve had to coach. Okay? So people say, ‘Gil, Gil…’ He is receptive and he will do whatever I ask him to do from a coaching standpoint. And I’ve said that from day one,” exclaimed Saunders.

“So whatever role I give him … I think it’s more the opposite where he’ll defer more than he will try to do too much, especially with the group that we have,” the coach continued. “So I think if I ask him to score, he’ll score. If I ask him to set people up, I think he’ll try to do that. And he did that last year and he’s continued to do that through training camp this year. I think that’s one of the reasons that our younger players have been so committed to what we’re trying to do because how he’s gone about his approach to doing things too.”

All Gilbert had to do was ask Flip if he could come off the bench or not play at all. But he has to make things difficult.

Okay, I was wrong when I said Gil was messing with the media. I assumed he'd been given a day off.

willbcocks, I have to acknowledge your points since Gil has been fined by the team. Flip is unhappy and the media will really run with the Gil fine. Who knows how this turns out long term.

What I know is naming Wall and Hinrich captains happened before the game. Wall I can see. Hinrich I cannot. That pretty much disrespects both Gilbert and Andray Blatche for years with the team--even though we know both guys don't have great leadership ability/personalities.

Regardless, I would have made Arenas and Blatche captains. That would have given both motivation to live up to captaincy and it wouldn't have created any waves.

EDITED--just read what Nivek posted. Flip is okay with Gil and that's all that matters.

How Gil still has a job is beyond me. Multiple knee surgeries, the gun thing and now his faking of a knee injury. I guess when you are locked in for that much money means you are stuck with him. I would think people would want him to stay away from that good young talent the Wizards have and would think that people would not want Gil to mentor Wall. To me Gil can only teach Wall to how to not be a PG, hog the ball, and be a knucklehead. Lucky Sam Cassell is there to counteract what Gil teaches Wall.
