Uncle Ted's folks might want to consider hiring a writer for their official blog.

It's just so strange hearing that Gooden lives in Bethesda. What's the deal with this guy? He's never played for Wizards, in fact completely dissed the team when traded here before. Didn't go to school here. He's a multi-millionaire who can live anywhere in the world, and he lives in Bethesda???

He's a secret hipster:

-- First he take a run on the Capital Crescent Trail.
-- Then, maybe do some shopping (Apple Store, Lululemon for his girl, etc).
-- Grab a Capital Bikeshare two-wheeler while sipping some organic green tea from Zen Tara Tea.
-- Go online on the free wifi in Bethesda and post bad things about WTA under a cool screen name.

It probably isn't a bad place for a young guy with money and free time. If you can just hop on a plane the glamorous cities like New York, Miami and even LA really aren't that far away.

It's quite the endorsement for the "DC is an attractive destination for free agents" discussion.

I don't know of any NBA players hanging out in OKC between contracts :)

A biting comment with truth to it from AusieBuck in the Bucks' forum:
Wall, Beal, Gooden. If there was a championship for long twos these guys would kill it.

Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard both live(d?) in Potomac near Congressional. I saw Charles Oakley at a health club in Bethesda about a decade ago.

I think a lot us on this board underrate the DMV's appeal to pro athletes and others...probably because most of us live here and thus take the area for granted. A large number of former 'Skins and Bullets/Wizards either never leave the area after retiring or return to the DMV after ending their careers elsewhere. The region has a large and stable middle- and upper-class, upscale housing, stores, cultural institutions, etc., and easy access to great cities up and down the East Coast. It also has good-looking people (present company excluded :) ) and ranks among the top areas in the nation for physcially fit and active people.

Black Enterprise magazine has consistently ranked Washington, DC as either the #1 or #2 most desirable region for African-Americans....and NBA free agents. :)

We'll see how it works out, but being able to pick up Gooden off the street this late in the season on a min deal with Nene going down is pretty lucky. He's always been a pretty skilled player and a good rebounder.

He seems to have the right attitude coming in, and certainly has experience. His wide number of teams and systems he's played for over his career should lend to him adapting quickly. A come the playoffs his veteran experience, size, rebounding, and 6 fouls should all come in handy.

As far as adding veteran experience, without impacting our cap flexibility after the season, to essentially add Gooden and Miller in place of Vesely and Maynor is a pretty decent job of tweaking the roster for the playoffs.

Also, I think the Wizards may now be leading the league in players sporting the shaved head with beard look!

Yeah, I'm not a black dude but if were to try to put that hat on for a sec and realize all the areas I might not want to be because there is high racism, then looked around to what this area had to offer, I could see wanting to be here.

Very mixed areas culturally. Beach isn't to far away. Like you said, easy to go to NY, easy to get to Florida. And if you have coin, NVA or Potomac are some damn nice places to live. And easy access to anything you want in DC. If you have some money, you could live in a lot worse places than this.

And now the city has gotten upgraded if you want the city living life.

Yeah, you would have to think Wall and Beal are happy. Gotta be easier for them to have some solid vet around to lean on and learn from.

Gooden, A Miller, AH, Trevor A, Webby, Gortat and Nene when he returns.

Those two have never seen anything like that kind of vet talent on their team.

Tyson's ex wife was a pediatrician at Georgetown. Leonard is from MD. Oakley played for the Wiz about a decade ago. No idea what Gooden's tie to the area is.

OK, he's here for at least 10 days. Who's gonna ask him?

Maybe it's just known that if you're from the neighborhood, Terd n Ernie are more likely to hire you.

I don't know what he's got left to contribute on the court, but at least he's a little different. Funny hairstyles, mom's from Finland, plays piano. Could be interesting.
