Terps 2016 basketball commit Anthony Cowan scores a career high 40 points

Against Melo Trimble's former high school Bishop O'Connell, 2016 4-star Maryland point guard commit Anthony Cowan scored a career high 40 points in a 80-70 win for St. John's. Cowan could be a front-runner for WCAC Player of the Year as a junior. Looks like the Terps have another special talent coming soon.

Dwayne Haskins would be huge for Maryland

To compete in the Big Ten East- which promises to be one of the toughest divisions in college football in the coming years- a difference making quarterback is helpful.

So if you are Maryland, you are pretty excited about the recent trending on 247Sports Crystal Ball for four-star quarterback Dwayne Haskins (Potomac, Md./Bullis School).

Including my prediction today, 15 of the last 16 predictive expert votes on the Crystal Ball for Haskins have come in in favor of the Terps.

While there may be other quarterbacks in the class ranked and rated higher- Haskins could make all the difference for the in-state Terrapins. He has a big arm, is athletic enough to make plays with his feet and has good leadership ability in the huddle.

Terps Part Ways with Defensive Coordinator Brian Stewart

The University of Maryland and Brian Stewart have decided to part ways. Stewart spent the last three seasons as the Terrapins defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach.

“We appreciate Brian’s contributions to our program over the past three seasons,” Randy Edsall saidin in a statement. “Brian played an integral role in developing our student-athletes both on and off the field during his time at Maryland. While overseeing the defense he helped elevate our program to compete in one of the nation’s premier conferences. In our conversations, we both felt this was the best of course of action for Brian and his family, and the Maryland football program. I wish Brian the best in his future endeavors.”

Inside linebackers coach Keith Dudzinski has been promoted to the vacant defensive coordinator position in his place. Dudzinski has served as the team's linebacker coach for the last four years and spent eight seasons as a defensive coordinator with UMass-Amherst.

“Keith is an accomplished coach who has a strong history as a defensive coordinator prior to his time at the University of Maryland,” Edsall said. “Over the past four seasons, he has been a great asset to our coaching staff in terms of game planning and developing our inside linebackers. Keith has a good rapport with our student-athletes and a great knowledge of our personnel, which will make for a seamless transition for our defensive unit.”

After last season's horrendous luck and terrible team chemistry, this season has been 100% the opposite.

I think Romelo Trimble could play for the Wizards right now. He's among the nation's leaders in free throws attempted and made. Terps are way up there in free throws. He's possibly more of a too small SG who'll have to convert to be a distributor, but the guy is a tremendous talent. He's the heart and soul IMO.

Looking at that box, the Terps shot 22-25 FTs and the Huskers were only 3-7 for the game. Home cooking tastes real good. :)

If you like Trimble you'll really like 2016 Terp commit Anthony Cowan.

A quick look at the Big Ten standings following Maryland's 69-65 win over Nebraska on Thursday night ...

-- The Terps improved to 10-4 in conference play, keeping pace in the race for second place with Purdue, which used a late surge to win 67-63 at Indiana. The Boilermakers are on fire, winning seven of eight to emerge as Maryland's toughest competition for second place barring an epic Wisconsin collapse to open the door at the top.

-- The Boilermakers' surge isn't such a bad thing for Maryland; it's increasing the value of the Terps' 69-60 win in West Lafayette, which remains Purdue's only home loss in Big Ten play. And with that win comes a Maryland tiebreaker if the two teams continue to race neck and neck.

-- Iowa hammered Rutgers by 34 points tonight, ending a two-game losing streak following the Hawkeyes' blowout win over Maryland. They're only 7-6, but may have the softest remaining schedule of any Big Ten team. Of course, Big Ten standings are the last things on Fran McCaffery's mind. Iowa needs to get hot in order to avoid the NIT.

-- Barring a collapse, the Terps will have a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament. The two-day byes are awarded to the conference's top four teams, and Maryland remains in second with three of its four remaining games coming against bottom-tier teams.

-- Indiana's loss could eliminate the Hoosiers from second seed contention. Now two games off he pace, they've got back-to-back games on the road, where they've struggled, followed by home games against Iowa and Michigan State.

-- Game of note this weekend: Michigan State at Illinois on Sunday night. Illinois (7-6) can jump into the mix for a top-four finishing, while Michigan State needs to keep pace with Maryland and Purdue for second place. The Spartans also may be one small slump from falling outside of the NCAA bubble.

On one hand, it's great that Trimble can put the team on his back and pull out the win - scoring 11 straight points down the stretch. Otoh, it's nervousing that they needed that to beat a .500 team at home. But a win's a win. I'll take it. Just realize they need to play better to keep winning.

Happy to win but at this rate the Terps will be one and done in March.

Hopefully Trimble stays in school. He could really be dominant with another year under his belt. Don't really think he's NBA ready anyway and most mocks don't even have him in the 1st round.

Dez Wells channeled his inner Greivis. Tremendous effort in every phase of the game by Wells - he willed the team to victory - helped by the kind of clutch play Trimble provides on a regular basis. John Wall - take note as to how Melo Trimble finishes games. And that was the most comfortable I've seen Cekovsky. I think he's finally getting it. And as for Jay Bilas and the rest of the anti court storming brigade - shut up! That wasn't a court storming. It was an orderly celebration done well after the teams did all their hand-shaking and showed respect for the Sconsin team. That was a great Maryland crowd.

Hell of a game. I was worried with how we were barely beating mediocre teams but we really came out strong early and sustained their pressure in the 2nd half.

With Wells and Trimble we can do some damage in the tournament but as usual it's gonna come down to matchups.
