Both good ideas, really.

In 2012 I posted a radical trade-down strategy that got us, I think 7 rookies: I had us trade our #3 to Portland for their #s 6 & 11, then trade their #6 to Houston for their #s 16 & 18, then trade their #16 to Boston for their #s 21 & 22, then trade their #22 to the Mavs for their #s 33 & 34, then trade their #34 to the Blazers for their #s 41 & 42.

This netted us Jeremy Lamb, Jared Sullinger, Miles Plumlee, Jae Crowder (taken w/ our own #32), Draymond Green, Khris Middleton & Will Barton. Not a bad haul as it turned out. :)

(Of course, I didn't think of this as a practical strategy -- just a very cool set of moves that happened to be there to do and also looked quite possible to me)

I made the same suggestion of trading the #3 to the #6 & #11. At 6 I was looking at Drummond, Waiters (ugh) & Lillard in that order. At 11 I would have went with John Henson (meh). I liked Jae Crowder & the young wing from Baylor (i forgot his name) at the top of my list in the 2nd round.

I'll guess Quincy Miller. Jones had such a low BBIQ

Yep, Quincy Miller. Turns out he never was the same from that serious injury in HS. Funny that out of those three, Quincy Acy had the best pro career.

Good game to watch for underrated prospects tomorrow at noon on CBS: Villanova (Josh Hart) vs Notre Dame (Bonzie Colson).

The Hart line: 37 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 turnover. 10/14 from the field, 3/4 from 3, 14/14 FT's. Still listed by draftexpress.com as the 44th pick in the draft. He's no Russell Westbrook. Oh, and Villanova is now the #1 ranked team in the country.

Jeremy Morgan from Northern Iowa is someone I'm going to have to defer to CCJ, Doc, and anyone else who has a feel for the smaller college players. He's a senior having a great season - after doing well as a junior and just okay before then. I'd write him off if he was in the 22/23 year old range, but he's 21 and won't turn 22 till after the season. Dramatic improvement in his steals plus blocks and rebounds. Weird dropoff in his 2 point shooting percentage - from 54% to 44% - he's actually shooting 3's a little better than 2's. Seems like he could be a 3 and D guy.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jeremy-Morgan-72476/

LIKE HIM. http://www.unipanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2750

(Guy facially IMO looks like a morph between Shane Battier and Steph Curry)

He looks as a player, like he lacks strength and probably is WAY TOO UNSELFISH. His strengths are way obvious in the video.
--LOVE his release on his shot. Deadly when he squares up.
--LOVE his step back
--LOVE that he balances out and stuffs the stats sheet (as Dick Vitale would say). Blocks and steals are almost unheard of in a G.
--Like that he's unselfish.
--REALLY LOVE HIS BIO. Both parents played NCAA D-1 Basketball. He's a smart kid from Iowa, which is wrestling (tough guy) country.

My question would be how does he handle adversity? Physical play and guys who are much stronger -- how does Morgan handle that?

Ruzious, just like you have come to like Jawun Evans as a guy I mentioned; YOU get this one. I hadn't heard of him TBH.

Jeremy Morgan is the type that MIGHT make an NBA roster as an undrafted FA. He's my FAVORITE kind of player. Four years. Mature. Low risk, second round pick type.

Got to watch a lot of talented players today.

Malik Monk is a phenomenal scorer. D'Aaron Fox is extremely quick. Lonzo Ball is a terrific passer.

I also liked TJ Leaf, Mark Loving, and Holiday from UCLA.

Watching UCLA I came away liking TJ Leaf the most. Seems like ideal stretch 4. Ball is fun to watch but I wonder about his ability to get into the lane and finish. I see a bit of Jason Williams in his game, good & bad. The flair, the court vision, the willingness to jack up 30 footers with no conscious.

Monk is a legit scorer. He's mix b/w J.R. Smith (without a screw loose) & Brad Beal. Like Beal he needs to work on his ball-handling to be an elite scorer at the NBA level. He's working his way into a top 5 pick.

Fox is a good athlete and solid decision maker. I don't see the Wall comparisons though. The red flag with him is his jumper. He's going to have major issues unless he becomes a much better shooter. He looks like he's behind Wall in that aspect.

doclinkin wrote:Tilting at windmills since we never use our 2nd round picks, I'm always looking for sleepers late. I think I found one of my guys this year. I like seniors who have slipped through the cracks and used their college career to actually, you know, LEARN their trade. You can find a few in the Portsmouth Invitational Tourney at the end of the year, players who quickly adjust to their roles in the NBA.

Draymond Green, Damian Lillard, David Lee, David West, JJ Redick, Chandler Parsons, George Hill, Wes Matthews. You can get great value from 4 year players who come into the NBA with a mature game and no need to sit the bench for a few years while they try to grow into their roles.

My guy this year is Jeremy Morgan of Northern Iowa. He's got good stats in the BBIQ measures (defensive boards, ast/to) and shows good improvement profile suggesting he is a grinder willing to learn (improving 3pt%, declining fouls per 40). His game logs show that he plays pretty well in big games against ranked opponents, works hard even when his shot isn't falling, stays active defensively and calls his own number when challenged. (posting numbers in FTs, boards, steals, and blocks even on nights when his FG% is off)

Eye test suggests he's a gamer, not a high flyer or superior ball handler, but knows his angles and teammates. He can hit the high arc of that jumper against defenders of any size. Scrappy and motivated and smart and tough; a low-ego coaches-dream type fighter who runs hard in both directions. His Assist numbers could be better, but that's not his role and his a/to ratio is in the positive and improving yearly.

His 2pt FG% is low as he has become the primary focal point of the offense this year and is adjusting to a freshman PG, but in past years he has shown a high % on the interior and midrange -- in a role more closely aligned to his likely NBA role as a 3&D specialist. Yes we need a back up ball handling 2-guard, more dribble drive threats, but playing next to John, or Saty if he pans out, this kid already would have a role.

A late or undrafted prospect, but the kind I wish we had stockpiled 2nd round picks, to let us take first look at him.

See how easy it is to look past Jeremy Morgan? Btw, last game - against Iowa - he had a bad shooting day going 4 for 13, but he still scored 14, grabbed 9 boards, and had 4 assists to 2 to's. So even when his shot is off, he's contributing.

Thoughts on Terrance Ferguson?
At first glance here are the obvious pros and cons via DX:

Strengths
-Good size for a wing at 6' 7”. Decent length – 6' 9.5” wingspan.
-Big-time leaper in transition. Best off of one foot.
-Can really get going from the perimeter with his feet set. Excellent when he's able to step into it in transition. Catches on the hop. Gets his feet set quickly. Nice elevation. Can run off of screens a little bit. Solid rotation and wrist action.
-Can make a one-dribble pull up.
-Capable of attacking a closeout.
-Outstanding feet on defense. Tremendous on ball defender when he digs in. Does a great job keeping the ball contained. Has the size and length to recover and contest.

Weaknesses
-Doesn't have a great frame – 186 lbs.
-Super bouncy but doesn't quite know how to use his athleticism in the half court. Very rigid ball handler. Offensive game is a little vanilla. Right-hand dominant.
-Can improve his ability to get to his jump shot vs a set defense.
-Dangerous when he gets going but can be very streaky as a shooter.
-Not much of a playmaker.
-Has some lapses as an off ball defender.

Reading the description and looking at his stats made me almost write him off immediately... Run/jump athlete who has limited skills, skipped college to make money in Europe and doesnt get rebounds, assist, steals, or blocks...Yuck Im out

But then I looked a little closer.
Turnovers - dont happen because he freezes out his teammates and then loses it, but because he tries to be to unselfish and make the pass. He actually has very natural vision and his passing will improve as his ball handling does.

Rebounds - 1st off he is a guard, so its not as important. But it should be said that all the video I've seen of the kid shows him fighting for rebounds, but he does play against grown men. I like his willingness to attack the rebound and the angles he takes. I believe he becomes a much better rebounding in time

Defense - He doesnt rack up steals and blocks, but he has great quickness and get in a good posture and will fight through screens. Really strong foundation for getting better there

Skipping college - I thought it was just a money grab, but he wrote this article (See below) stating why he made the decision and I actually think he is truly focused on getting better and working on his craft

http://www.theplayerstribune.com/2016-6-30-terrance-ferguson-arizona-australia-basketball/

We have to remember that he went from being the best shooting, most athletic player in every game he played in HS... to playing against grown men fighting for a paycheck. His frame really reminds of Otto, in that he is weak/frail, but hardworking and physical. I actually think his defense and rebounding will really improve as he gets stronger.
Another issue is his terrible ball handling. Improving that over the next couple years will be great for shooting off the dribble and lowering turnovers.

In conclusion, he has a lot of Otto to him as far as frame and being scrappy, but not as savvy or long. He is more athletic which makes me think he'll be better at getting to the line, one area Otto cant quite seem to overcome.
We've also seen Beal improve at getting to the line, shooting off the dribble, and lower turnovers as his ball handling got better...

My (VERY VERY Early) forecast is Zach Lavine. But he could be better as he seems a little more focused and gritty. I think he is worth a shot around 20-25.

Sounds like Will Barton is a good comp to Ferguson. Seems awfully raw. DX has him as the 18th pick in the 2017 draft - that seems a little high to me.

You might be right, but I think that is his floor. At 18, Barton was 6'5 (No shoes) and 161 lbs while Ferguson is 6'6 and 186 lbs. That 25 lbs makes a difference and he is a better athlete, which is why I said Lavine.

Looking at what this kid does on the floor, it's hard to believe DR ranks him at #44 in their current mock. Even harder to believe he'll stay out of R1. He looks like he'd be a steal just about anywhere you picked him.
