Good shooter, even off the dribble, and is smart as hell. Butler was one of the smartest college teams I'v seen in a long time, and he was the starting PG. A winner. I had been hoping for a while he would be our pick, and kind of had a feeling he would be selected. Great pick IMO.
Good enough for me. His stats aren't real good, but he's as much a winner as anyone in college basketball. And he looks like a running back - sorta like Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson from the old Pistons. His strength and leaping ability can help make up for some of his lack of height, and he can team with Wall. I see him as an emergency PG and more of a 2 than anything else. Very good guy to have on the roster - though I wouldn't project him ever being a regular rotation player.
I loved what I read about him last night. I I checked out the little scouting reports thing they tossed up on SI yesterday, and there was a small write up on Mack from one of the scouts they interviewed:
"Shelvin Mack, 6-3 junior guard, Butler. I'm a big fan. I just think he's steady. He's a point guard who can get you into the offense and can play off superstars. The team went to back-to-back championship games and he had a lot to do with it. Defensively, he knows how to play right now. He worked out very well for us. He's a career No. 2 point guard, but those guys have value. You have to have a really good backup point guard in this league. He has no B.S. in his game, and if you have B.S. in your game, he's going to take it away and make you wish you didn't see him today. One of my fav things about this is I really feel like we've completed the backcourt. Wall, Mack, Crawford, Young. I think we're set. We've got youth and size and athleticism and now some toughness in the frontcourt too, so there's hope. For a draft bereft of talent we landed the second highest upside size guy, the best defensive player, and the most successful point guard in the draft. And you have to love what they say, and what we saw with Mack. He was a fighter, he was smart, and when he completed arsed up against Pitt with the stupid foul, look at his face (its probably on youtube), he's pretty much the only guy in the gym that believed Butler wouldn't lose, and he did it himself, getting in the head of the guy who was set to win the game for Pitt. I love Butler, he was at the bottom of the list of guys i wanted at 34, but he was still on the list, only Bertans, Honeycutt, and Malcolm Lee were above him on my list, but only Honeycutt strikes me as a genuine lock to be a better player than Mack, and Mack fits are team needs to a tee, we could really use his defensive acumen, attitude, positiviity and dedication.
As others have said, this draft not only injected talent, it injected winners, with upside, and every single one of these guys is a hard worker. It is intriguing, as others have said our last seven draftees have all been players that are winners, workers, and effort guys with great attitudes across the board. Really excited. I have a feeling Blatche will either get it (granted we've all said this for three years), or be gone by the trade deadline in 2013.
