rockymac52, unless there is a plan to use the created cap space from Carters expiring the Wizards would be better off waiting for Arenas's value to increase. Trading somebody of Arenas's talent at 28 for cap relief is trigger happy. I think Arenas is on the way back to being close to what he was. The Wizards front office probably thinks that to. If he's back to where he was and still in his 20's then a lot can get done with that.

Fancy-dancy reason is exactly right. All your BS goes right out the window if John Wall pulls a LeBron on the Wizards because they suck so bad. I'm sure Cleveland's statisticians had that one in the cards for sure!

hey guys ,i am one of the biggest arenas fans , i always liked him and will always will, but maybe its occurring to me that this J-wall/Gil thing is not working out and were not winning this year. That means the only option is to trade him , but not right now , probably until the deadline , hes still not at full shape , but when he is he will be drawing a lot of attractions from championship caliber teams, so as the magic, if they give us gortat/carter or some pick i will do it , well if others teams offer some first round compensation with some young talent,. i will be willing (although hesistant  ) to trade him.

Here's Ken Berger with a quick hit on the Gil talk:

* As we touched on during preseason , Magic GM Otis Smith was presented a trade proposal involving Gilbert Arenas and Vince Carter this past summer, and despite Smith's close relationship with Arenas, he turned it down. Sources have continued to believe that the Wizards would only be able to trade Arenas if and when he proved he was healthy and in a positive place emotionally after the ruinous 50-game suspension he incurred last season. To the Wizards' delight, that has finally happened. Since being reinserted into the starting lineup eight games ago, Arenas has been consistently exceeding 30 minutes a night and has scored at least 20 points in five of those games. While the Magic have let it be known that they're willing to make a big deal if it involves trading anyone except Dwight Howard, sources say there has been no movement on the Arenas front since the aforementioned discussions fell apart.

'Bout what we thought, but worth noting as Berger's a very good source for this sort of thing.

Several "expert" Magic fans are posting how horrible Blatche is at everything including his horrendous passing. He's a black hole, a cancer, worst defender known to man, and without saying it seems to be the worst power-forward in the league. This is coming from a fan base that has Rashard Lewis as their starter.

Then their take on Arenas is just as comical. Same thing- cancer, can't play defense, will chuck every shot he sees, overrated, won't be able to come back from injury etc. etc. I almost decided to call them out for their stupidity but mods itch to pull the trigger on a suspension/ban it seems. Especially them Florida teams

As others have said, I'm sure talks went like this:

Otis: Hey Ernie, I'll give you Shard for Gil! What do you say!?
Ernie: Uhh... Didn't I decline this earlier this year? It's VC for Gil straight up or nothing.
Otis: Can't do that Ernie but I'll compromise; How about a deal based around Gil for Rashard and I'll give you Orton?
Ernie: No.
Otis: Fine, you drive a hard bargain Ernie but I'll give you VC for Gil!.. but small detail, throw in Blatche.
Ernie: *Click*

Seems to me that their opinion of Blatche is spot on.

For teams looking for front court help, is Yi available for an EC and draft picks?

Not gonna happen.

Wall is locked up for four years. We have RFA rights after that. At the very least, he will resign with us on a 3-year contract (like Lebron and Wade did) when his rookie deal expires. Essentially, we've got him for 7 years. In 7 years, his decision to "pull a Lebron" or not will have nothing to do with whether or not we dumped Gilbert Arenas. Arenas will be 36 years old 7 years from now.

Nope, it will have everything to do with how good or bad the team is. History suggest we'll be pretty bad though doesn't it? LeBron left a 60 win team, I doubt Wall will shed too many tears leaving a 30 win one.

I'm concerned enough about the horrendous possibility of Gil being traded for Rashard Lewis that I think this deserves it's own thread and a concentrated e-mail campaign to Leonis begging him not to make that trade. Yes I'm paranoid but how bad would that absolutely suck?? I don't like Gil for Vince but I understand it and I could live with it. Gil for Shard would just suck on so many levels for such a long time that I think we need to take these minor steps of making "Don't Get Rashard Lewis Under Any Circumstances" it's own thread and have some sort of e-mail campaign.

I don't even know why we are still discussing this. Ted already said the rumors are not true.

What if it had been discussed? Do you expect him to say "the rumors are true we are discussing trading some guys with Orlando" at which point both teams are embroiled. EG seems to deny most discussions as well beyond they "we are always willing to listen" type throwaway comments.

Personally, I don't believe Ted for a second as far as the big picture aspects of a Gil trade. I can accept that he's being genuine with a "there's nothing to these specific rumors with a trade right now", but that's as far as I'd go.

All reports are consistent in that, just over five months ago, we called Orlando and made a formal offer. Mike Lee was not the only guy to report this as that was out of the Orlando side too - that kid Alex Kennedy specifically said Otis laughed in Ernie's (or whoever called) face, though that may not be true. That speaks to the 'Zards actual position a lot more directly than the polished sound bites that are making the rounds.

Idle speculation, but, I would also think that the team's overall performance would have a bearing too with a good record/general team-wide effectiveness making it more likely that they'd want to stick with Gil.

I'd really like to get Varajeo over here. And it seems to me that Cleveland would be willing to deal him for the right young player. Would they do Varajeo for Blatche? Would we? It would leave us without a low post scorer, but then, it's not like Blatche is setting the world ablaze with his low post efficiency either. It sure would be nice to have a big with some defensive IQ.

The Varajeo/Blatche trade is something I'd definitely consider - but not till waiting for at least a month. We have to think long-term over short-term. V would definitely help short-term, and it sure would make it easier to watch the team, but losing now is not necessarily a bad thing. And Blatche's upside means ya bend a lot more than ya want to - when you're rebuilding. My heart says trade him; my head says - keep waiting.

I like Varajeo but I think its a huge downgrade in talent.

I'm as frustrated with Blatche as anyone but I'm not trading him for a role player who plays decent defense.

while i agree that ernie was probably trying before the season (and before ted said something) all the rumors on this subject seem to be extremely orlando slanted (first otis laughing at the proposal and now suggesting blatche is included). my guess is that they are strategic leaks from orlando to try and influence things in their direction. there is absolutely no incentive for the wizards to be pushing this now. gil has been playing well and has been very helpful with the young players (obvious from watching the games). orlando meanwhile (though theyve been playing very well of late) needs help in the backcourt to truly contend and long term replacements for carter and lewis. switching carter/lewis for arenas/blatche is almost a dream scenario for them and would significantly extend their window. they are just trying to make it a self-fulfilling prophecy and it's pretty transparent. hopefully ernie isnt the fool who falls for it.
Until Grunfeld goes there is no rebuild.

I think I would trade Blatche for Varejao.

Blatche is a much better distributor, ball-handler, and potentially can be a good scorer. However, this season I think Washington having three ball-dominant guards takes away some of Blatche's effectiveness. His assists are down from last season.

Varajeo is an effective defender and a hustle player. As you say nate, he's got good defensive IQ. I can see pairing him with McGee and the Wizards becoming much better defensively. Right now, Blatche is the biggest culprit in what's wrong defensively with the Wizards.

However, my mind would be to follow Ruz's caution and wait. Right now Blatche isn't shooting well. I'd wait another month or so to see if he turns it around.

My gut feeling is that even though Blatche is 4 years younger and a far, far better offensive player; Varajeo would help this Wizards team more at PF.
The Wizards shoukd have drafted Derik Queen

I told you so :banghead:
