I don't think he really duplicates Seraphin. He might be closer to Booker. He is more offensive minded than Seraphin, but does not have as much potential as a shot blocker and rebounder. I think he could be a good addition because he is physical and a scorer.

Bass is statistically comparable to Blatche for rebounding. Better on the offensive glass (10.3% v. 7.4%), worse on the defensive (15.4% v. 16.6%). Bass' rebounding hasn't changed much since his days in Dallas, so it's not clear that there is a significant Dwight effect.

I don't know enough about his defense, but the game impact seems quite positive.

Absolutely. Doesn't matter where we're picking, I'd do it even with the top pick. I think Granger is the perfect fit for the team. Young enough to grow with the core guys, veteran enough to be a leader and an actual professional basketball player. Fills the biggest need on the roster. Too bad it'll never happen.

fishercob wrote:Let's say the Wiz land a top 3 pick. Would you trade it + Blatche for Kevin Love and Wes Johnson (+ necessary fillers)?

Uh, yeah. Fast as you can, before Minny comes to their senses. Would actually make the Wiz a balanced team. Only downside is that there's be a lot of extensions due within a 3-year window. Again, too bad it wouldn't happen.

LyricalRico wrote:Yi+Thornton+minimum contract for Bass+Pietrus?

Yes, again - makes us a more balanced team, with actual veterans who actually know how to play actual NBA basketball. Orlando's owner might be tempted from a financial standpoint, but it robs depth just as they're gearing up for a Championship push. Can't see them doing it.

All of these deals speak to the needs that the Wiz have: SF, inside scoring & rebounding. In fact, several of my top targets (hypothetically) are on here. These are the guys who I would add, from any roster in the league, based on the Wiz' current lineup:

1. Blake Griffin
2. Kevin Durant
3. Danny Granger
4. Dwight Howard
5. Kevin Love
6. Nicolas Batum

Others: Pau Gasol (age an issue?), Paul Millsap, Emeka Okafor, Arron Afflalo, Carl Landry, Luol Deng (flame away...)

Rookies/Young guys: Tiago Splitter, Wesley Johnson, Patrick Patterson, Taj Gibson, Derrick Favors, James Harden, Xavier Henry, Evan Turner

Great/Good players - but positions that are less of a need: Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Brook Lopez, Marc Gasol (could he play next to McGee? If so, he moves up), Kendrick Perkins

Guys who are on the back half of their careers - great players, but not with the youth movement: Kobe, Pierce, Garnett, Gerald Wallace (lotsa mileage), Joe Johnson

Guys who I just couldn't stomach on the team: LeBron, Bosh, Joakim Noah

What's interesting is how many of those guys were picked outside of the top 5. I'd be real reluctant to trade away this year's pick unless it's for one of those top young players, because it's entirely possible to draft the next Granger/Batum/Wallace with a late lottery/mid-first rounder. (Tyler Honeycutt, Jared Sullinger, Derrick Williams, Chris Singleton - for example...)

Don't know if it was a conscious omission, but I think Eric Gordon would be the perfect running mate for Wall.

Also, Evan Turner is terrible and would not be a good fit for this team, since he needs the ball in his hands to be effective.

I honestly think the perfect fit for the team in the draft would be Jared Sullinger. Is there really a consensus top 3 yet anyhow?

So, if Irving and Barnes are say the consensus 1 and 2....I would just trade down with the 3rd team etc to land Sullinger and asset etc.

Assuming we do plan to offer Nick Young a contract, can't move Gil and also hit McGee with an extension, I'd advocate doing something wild and stoopid by way of a BOYD. Even if just two of those transpire, we might well be cutting into our cap space to where a significant acquisition is not doable in 2011 or 2012 (be it absorption or signings), so I'd just go further yet and completely put my foot in it on an all you can eat BOYD platter. I know a lot of people would like to just get some useful Vets instead, but the point is that there's not really enough money/assets to do that in a particularly profound sort of way under this scenario. And theoretically, we'd probably still have the MLE here anyway if Ted's feeling spendy. Also, if Hiney goes out, you might be able to do both a BOYD and pull a 2011 signing.

But how stupid of a BOYD? Well, something like Hinrich + expirings or just straight expirings in exchange for something hideous but manageable so long as it's conjoined to a mid-late lottery pick. You can't do it to where you're actually propelling your BOYD partner into the playoffs and you're taking back a mid-round pick, so it's a fine line. But I'm talking Maggette or Diop/Carrol type shenanigans here (so long as Hiney's outgoing from a fiscal perspective). I think near full on recklessness is looking like the best card if cap space isn't in our future. I think Ted would be interested in this, but I don't know if his pockets will go that deep on a gutter-ball squad (I'd imagine he's at least tentatively enthused about our later picks in this past draft).

Charlotte is probably the best partner, but it would have to be a draft night trade as they already dealt their 2012 pick. As to them..... A) they're choking on bad contracts and won't go over the tax B) Their owner is impatient and impulsive C) They have a win now roster D) They have a horrible draft/player development history and they know it. If not both of Diop and Carrol, there's Najera, Livingston and Henderson (Maybe Boris-D too, though he could opt out) - lot's of cart filler there. Might be the 10th or 11th pick, so you'd want $10 million or so to be the compensation level that negotiations would start at.

Again, that's if we're going to kill our cap space anyway (i.e. retain Nick/extend Javale), but from there, you're probably looking at a consolidation trade at some point down the line with all those rookie deals swimming around in our roster pool.

It's a flawed plan, but the alternatives probably have even bigger holes other than maybe signing Wilson Chandler if we're not drafting a small forward.

A couple ideas to help balance the roster:

Wash in:
Brand, Louis Williams, Songaila
76ers in:
Arenas, Yi, Booker, protected future 1st

Wash in:
Brandon Wright, Rad-Man
GSW in:
Hinrich, Thornton

The Philly trade might be a stretch, but Booker, who has shown flashes, and the protected first might be sufficient incentive to get Philly to bite considering the annual salary implications will be roughly the same. Also, with Louis Williams going out the 76ers could actually use Arenas and Lou Williams is a better fit with Washington than Arenas because he's pretty much used to being a 6th man. Further, there'd never be the awkward 'who's gonna bring the ball up' moments with Wall/Williams like there is with Wall/Arenas.

Regarding the GSW trade, if the Wiz bring in Williams it'd make sense to clear Hinrich. Removing Hinrich's salary for 2011 thereby increases the chance of resigning Young and potentially bringing on Chandler while still retaining cap flexibility.

Wall/Williams
Young/2011 draft pick?
Chandler/Howard?
Brand/Blatche/2011 draft pick.
McGee/Blatche/Seraphin

Good young two way players at 1-3, 5, and a veteren two way player at 4. With Williams and Blatche off the bench they'd still have the bench scoring punch that N1 is currently providing.

I'd rather leave the Philly deal at Gil for Brand. Booker's a guy I want to keep. If you want to include somebody else, include Blatche since his lack of conditioning and stupid plays would only get worse if he's benched.

I love the idea of trading Arenas for Brand. That's probably something that we could have made work in the offseason. Unfortunately, Brand has played pretty well of late and Philly already has a Gil-like player in Jrue Holiday, so I don't see how it could work out now.

To trade Arenas for Brand, we'd probably have to make it a 3-way.

How about this if Orlando lets Vince go in the offeason:

Wiz trade: Arenas
Wiz receive: Brand and Pietrus

Magic trade: Lewis and Pietrus
Magic receive: Arenas and Iguodala

Sixers trade: Brand and Iguodala
Sixers receive: Lewis

TRADE ID 5760682

We balance our team with solid vets. Orlando reloads without adding any short-term salary. They are taking a risk with fit but they need to keep the cupboard stocked to ensure they keep Howard. Philly gets short and longterm cap relief.

Pacers trade TJ Ford
Wiz trade Kirk Hinrich

I think Hinrich is the superior player and could make the Pacers better. But is there a compelling reason for you to move his contract a year early?

It's worth noting that if New York trades for Melo in-season, they'll almost surely just go ahead and retain Wilson Chandler. With Chandler's play of late they might just prefer him over Galo anyway.

I could see something like this:

New York incoming: Melo (and small filler)
Denver incoming: D. Gallinari & Utah or Memphis pick from 'Sota
'Sota incoming: Big fat Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph & New York Cash (some small filler going out)

That's a pretty sorry package for Melo aside from the tax benefits, but he's crimped the Nug's position rather mightily.

As to us, that deal (or something similar) would effectively take Wilson Chandler off of the potential get list as Yonkers has him as a restricted.

It's just not fair. NY is going to end up getting Melo for practically nothing. And if they do it via trade, they'll be able to use Larry Bird Rights to retain Chandler, plus use the MLE to sign another starter. Maybe they add Troy Murphy as a floor-stretching big:

PG Felton/Douglas
SG Chandler/Miles
SF Melo/Chandler
PF Amare/Turiaf
C Murphy/Turiaf

Hmmm. What about pushing the reset button on Blatche and trading him for Anthony Randolph + filler (Azubuike)? The premise is that we have given up on Blatche ever being more than the dreaded "good player on a bad team", and instead, we're taking a chance on Randolph. NY considers it because Blatche has the size to be a center in NY's system. He could back up Amare and play the same kind of role, or he could play alongside Amare as a "stretch 5".

NO! The Wizards shouldn't even think about this trade for 1 second. If you think Blatche is lazy, Randolph is on another level. He has extremely low BBIQ, has a TERRIBLE work ethic, and is lazy on the court. He is a great athlete and very talented, but he will never be a superstar like many people were saying he would become in the offseason. He was the main player in the GS-NY trade in the offseason, but isn't contributing like it. He is in Mike D'Antoni's doghouse, and has only played 11 games and is only averaging 2.2 points. He's a waste of talent. Maybe he develops into a good role player down the line, but he will NEVER be a superstar.

As for Blatche, I don't think he has peaked yet. People are underestimating how much of an impact that foot injury had on him. He still isn't in great shape, but is still contributing decently. I think he is getting better right now. He looks quicker than he did at the beggining of the season. As the season goes on and he rounds back into shape, I think he will prove all of you wrong.

I'd be up for a Booker and Yi for Gortat trade. We'd gain an experienced and competent big man to help us right he boat as a respectable team this year, and the playoffs next.
