BREAKING: Carlos Carriere Commits to Maryland

A week after adding one Georgia receiver, the Terps have added another. Alpharetta (Ga.) three-star Carlos Carriere publicly announced his commitment to Maryland Saturday morning.

The Terrapins have led in Carriere's recruitment for the spring, and offensive coordinator Walt Bell's trip back to Georgia to see the 6-foot-5, 170-pound wideout this week solidified his decision. With two commitments at the position -- Maryland added itsfirst, Langston Hughes (Ga.) three-star Sean Nelson, eaelier this month -- D.J. Durkin now likely has two spots remaining at the position.

The Terps are now up to nine commitments in the 2017 recruiting class, and Carriere’s commitment gives them the nation’s 14th best recruiting class. Maryland is also fourth in the Big Ten in the recruiting rankings, behind Ohio State, Michigan and Iowa. Carriere is ranked as the 97th-best wideout in the nation per the 247 Composite.

Here's What Cole Field House Looks Like Now

When last we checked in on the construction at Cole Field House, construction crews had just begun breaking ground after removing all of the seats, which are being sold as memorabilia for 10 more days. We've got a new look at how the interior of how the place looks a couple months into its transformation from historic basketball arena to ultramodern indoor football and academic facility.

Image

As you might have noticed, the playing area has been gutted from floor to stands. But why so much light beaming in from the far end? This is why:

The facade has been torn almost entirely off the of the building on the Maryland Stadium-end of Cole, which is about three months into construction. The first phase of Maryland's efforts to create a state-of-the-art $155 million facility (full details here) is expected to be completed in spring 2017, with two more phases to come thereafter.

The project is already helping first-year head coach D.J. Durkin, who's been able to show recruits the site of a future home that will compare to some of the best football buildings in the facility-rich Big Ten; Maryland football's recruiting class ranks 15th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten in the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Melo is returning to College Park for his senior season. He officially withdrew his name from the draft last night. Very smart move for him and great for the program!

Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

BREAKING: Top-40 Recruit Justin Jackson Picks Maryland

Yesterday Mark Turgeon found out his star point guard was coming back. And today, his top remaining high school recruit announced his commitment. Top-40 forward Justin Jackson is a Terp.

With at least four of five of his starters from last season leaving school, Turgeon entered the middle of the offseason in need of immediate reinforcements, but also facing a market lacking many high-quality options. Today, though, Turgeon reeled in one of the few upper-level prospects available when the 6-foot-7 Jackson announced his pledge to the Terps -- which came yesterday, according to InsideMDSports sources.

Jackson, a Canada native ranked the sixth-best small forward and No. 40 prospect overall in the high school Class of 2016, switched his commitment from UNLV -- where he committed a year-and-a-half ago -- to Maryland , where he officially visited in late April. Jackson, who becomes the fourth member of Turgeon's 2016 class, is a major addition from Turgeon, especially late in the recruiting cycle, and should help fill the vacancies created by departing forwards Jake Layman and Robert Carter.

Jackson, who weighs 229 pounds and has a 7-foot-3 wingspan, isn't the polished product Layman and Carter were, but he's a skilled forward with impressive ability to handle, pass, shoot and rebound for a big man his age. He chose Maryland over Oregon and UConn, each of which he visited in May. With Ducks standouts Dillon Brooks and Tyler Dorsey returning and the Terps' small forward spot thin on depth, Jackson saw the opportunity for immediate playing time at Maryland and made his decision.

I think getting Jackson is even bigger than Melo returning. Now Md, though certainly not a NC contender, can at least make the tournament and has some potential.

And I assume Jackson coming is related to Melo returning. It was getting depressing to look at the likely drop in talent next season, and all of a sudden - we're looking good again.

Turgeon Excited About a Cowan-Trimble Backcourt

One of the biggest questions following Melo Trimble's decision to return to Maryland: how will Turgeon employ Trimble with the point guard who was recruited to replace him when Trimble inevitably -- but not so inevitably, after all -- was going to leave for the NBA after last season. In freshman Anthony Cowan, Trimble, a player accustomed to dominating the ball, will be joined by another decorated point guard on the roster for the first time.

Trimble will remain Maryland's point guard by default, and he'll have the ball in his hands again of course, but based on Turgeon's comments Tursday on the ESPNU College Basketball Podcast, it sounds like Trimble's ready to play more off the ball than he has in his first two years. That will allow him to use his offensive attack while Cowan takes some of the distribution duties off his plate.

"I think they all fit well together. I think Anthony and Melo are completely different basketball players, so that's good for me. They'll fit together well on the court. I think Anthony's gonna take some pressure off of Melo. The ball won't have to be in his hands all the time. Melo can score in a variety of ways. He hasn't been able to show that. I think it's mostly been off ball screens and on the break. I think Melo will show his complete basketball offensive arsenal next year," Turgeon said.

Coach Turg was a HUGE disappointment this past season, I never saw any evidence that he was a better than average coach.

Maryland Recruiting Class Begins its Era in College Park

The incoming Maryland basketball recruiting class, a highly regarded group that could determine whether Mark Turgeon's program continues its upward progression during the next several years, officially began its arrival in College Park yesterday.

Freshman signees Anthony Cowan and Micah Thomas moved in on Monday, the first two arrivals of a five-man class that also includes freshman guard Kevin Huerter, freshman forward Justin Jackson and senior forward L.G. Gill, a transfer from Duquesne. Gill told IMS he'll also move to College Park this week, while Huerter and Jackson will get to campus in three weeks; Huerter was selected to try out for USA Basketball's Under-18 team, on which Turgeon is an assistant coach, from June 14-18.

Maryland's class, boosted last week by the late commitment of Jackson -- the No. 8 small forward and 44th-best senior overall according to 247Sports -- is ranked ninth nationally and second in the Big Ten in the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings. Cowan and Huerter are expected to play significant minutes immediately, although it remains to be seen how Turgeon will intertwine a suddenly-crowded backcourt cast following Melo Trimble's return. Jackson and Thomas will compete for opportunities at small forward, while Gill is the favorite to start at power forward.

Spanish Forward Joshua Tomaic Commits to Maryland

Maryland has added its fifth and final member of its 2016 recruiting class. Joshua Tomaic, a 6-foot-9 forward from the Canarias Basketball Academy in Spain, announced his plans to commit and sign his letter of intent on Wednesday via a school press release.

“I’m very extremely happy because I can make my dream come true," Tomaic said in a release put out by CBA. "My family and I are very thankful with (head coach) Rob Orellana and all the CBA coaches; they gave me the great opportunity to be part of the Academy. I have worked so much and I have lived two hard years, but it doesn´t matter now because I´m going to be playing in the states. I think that Canarias Basketball Academy is the best place in the world to make your dreams come true and to achieve your goals".

Tomaic is the second player from the Academy to sign with Maryland, joining junior center Michal Cekovsky
. He's a highly-skilled forward prospect who can play both on the perimeter and in the paint. He's a strong ball handler for his size with a decent shooting stroke and a good feel for the game. While not the most explosive athlete, he's a solid rebounder and finisher with a good nose for the ball. He's far from a finished product and could develop into a starter down the road.

“Joshua’s improvement has skyrocketed in the last two seasons," Orellana said in the same release. "He has made a conscientious decision to work both on the court and in the books and what we are seeing today are the results of those efforts although he still has a big window for improvement. Also, the trust that Joshua and his mother put in us when Joshua had the opportunity to play for other clubs in the Canary Islands made us want to push him as much as possible. Knowing we helped a young man from the Canary Islands achieve his dreams makes it all the more gratifying”

Tomaic joins four-star guards Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter, four-star forward Justin Jackson and three-star forward Micah Thomas in Maryland's 2016 recruiting class. The Terps now have the maximum 13 players on scholarship for the upcoming season.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.
