Practice? We talkin' about practice?

MikeJonesSports Michael Sweetney will not be on the Wizards summer league team because of a family emergency.

MikeJonesSports Nick Young and Al Thornton are practicing with the Wizards summer league team. Andray Blatche, who's in a walking boot is watching.

MrMichaelLee John Wall is tearing up this practice. Getting to the hoop @ will, tossing lobs to JaVale McGee & hitting Js. Kid's put in work on that J

It's also good to hear that Young and Blatche seem pretty engaged with the team, even if they're not playing in summer league themselves.

McGee could average 8 points per game easily just by getting lobs from Wall.
Bickerstaff: who's up for kickball?!!
Ed Wood: Only if it's the no-pants variety.

It's summer league basketball.

The Detroit Pistons TRAINER just got kicked out of the game for picking up his second T of the game for yapping at the refs from the bench.

Dude, you are a fricking TRAINER. What the heck are you doing picking up two separate techs from the bench. OF A SUMMER LEAGUE GAME.

If you read this on Friday night, as I type this, 10:20 p.m., Wizards opponent on Sunday Golden State is getting ready to tip off vs New Orleans on NBA TV.

How about this quote:

"The 22-year-old McGee, who got an opportunity for extended minutes last season after Brendan Haywood was traded to Dallas, has returned on a mission to build upon that campaign. He arrived in camp seven pounds heavier and now stands 7-feet-1 1/4 after hitting an unexpected growth spurt. "

Whaaaaaaaat???

Oh my goodness. If he can just play defense, the boy is going to break all known alley-oop records with Wall running the show. Yes please!

Summer League 2010 Thread

I haven't seen one - so merge if necessary...

I just watched DeMarcus Cousins. Yeah he could stand to get into better basketball shape but I didn't realize that his basketball IQ was that high. Then again he was going up against a few stiffs. His most impressive plays were making a pump fake at the 3 point line, causing the shot blocker to react and then drove for an easy dunk. He also hit the game winning basket and had the courage to do so after airballing his previous shot.

Of course, Cousins needs to get in better shape. He seems to struggle in transition defense. But overall, he's an impressive prospect at the center spot- and he played well against a team that passed on him in the Minnesotta Timberwolves.

Yeah, I think that might have motivated him a little bit. I agree he has a nice feel for the game. He threw good outlet passes quickly, for example. It's too bad there was no realistic way to get both Wall and Cousins. Oh well, at least he's in the Western Conference.

The games I saw, Lance Stephenson, Dereck Caracter and Devin Ebanks all looked like total steals, Caracter could start as an NBA PF tomorrow.

Russell Robinson from D-league select looked quite nice, 20pts and 2 assist vs Cleveland (not his fault his team mates missed open 3s). I think he is going to be on someones roster as 3th or maybe 2nd PG.

Caracter was a guy who I targeted before the draft. But... it's Summer League. Summer League success does NOT come close to equalling NBA success. A lot of guys who look good in Summer League never play in the NBA. Ebanks will stink in the NBA, imo.

No disclaimer needed re: Summer League, it is Summer League, but Kuptchek is thrilled by their haul.

I think the general rule of thumb is: poor play in summer league usually means poor play in the NBA, and good play in summer league means nothing. AKA summer league is better used as a tool for spotting duds than finding gems. There's always exceptions, of course, and human nature means it's tough not to feel good when you see guys you tagged as steals playing well.

Yeah, I know Character had an impressive stat line for a couple games -- something like 16, 10, a couple steals, a block...something like that. But in that same game he had 8 fouls and 8 turnovers. So maybe he could start as an NBA PF tomorrow, but my guess is he'd get eaten alive and would foul out in the second quarter.

For anyone wondering what the heck happened to Sweetney, this is from today's Hoopshype.com:

Scott Schroeder: Things you need to know: source says Michael Sweetney weighed in at 348 pounds in washington and thus didn't make the trip to vegas. Ouch. Twitter

That's sad.
