Match-up of the Night

John Wall versus Expectations

When you're the #1 pick, it's hard not to step onto the court without carrying the weight of a hopeful and down-trodden franchise on your back. If you're #1, it generally means your team sucked last year. (Or that your team is suck.) Will the Great Wall of Chinatown be the Wizards savior? A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. That first step occurs at the Cox Center.

( Expect lots of editing to this post as the rosters become clearer.)

-- Can the Wizards new movement toward a speed, aggressive, physical game begin to take shape?
-- What will you be specifically looking for when watching the game?
-- Does Sweets still have something to offer on an NBA squad? Is he in tip-top shape?

Post your thoughts, opinions and predictions here.

I heard he don't want none of it and is begging management for a trade to New York for David Lee. Randolph can run, but he can't hide.

I remember it well. I didn't have cable at the time so I went over a friends house to watch it. It was against the Boston Celtics and I think he actually had 17 points. He had this one play where he rec'd the ball at the top of the key, pump faked, and blew by his man for a dunk.

Sadly, it was all downhill from there. :nonono:

I remember this game and this exact play as well. It's funny because this was the only move Kwame ever had in the NBA.

Warriors will be buried by a barrage of powerful left handed dunks.

Bullets: 190-14

Players can look so good before the scouting report on them comes out.

I'd like to see evidence that McGee has worked on his game. In particular his defensive spacing and positioning, and actually holding his space on the block, rather than conceeding space and just going for a shot block. I'd like to see evidence that McGee has worked on some post moves.

First, it's cool to have Pine back.

I'm not so interested to see Wall as I am to see Sweetney and Randle. Any doubts we might have about Wall won't be answered in a summer league. Remember, Sweets had PERs in the 17's with the Knicks while being overweight - before becoming plain obese with the Bulls. If he's in shape, he can fill a need - at least for this season. He seemed like a good hard-working tough kid, but... he's struggled with weight all his life. And Randle is... fun. Is his offense good enough to make up for his defense?

So, the lesson is it would be a bad sign if Wall rec'd the ball at the top of the key, pump faked, and blew by his man for a dunk?

:dontknow:

I'm curious about Kyle Spain and Ben Woodside having followed their stats in the NCAA without access to eyes-on images. Ditto Lester Hudson, Mr QuadDouble. Small conference supastars. They all should look askance at Reggie Williams, who seems to have made the transition.

I'm always interested in Sun Yue, he's got significant size and creativity with the ball, but has never been able to make a game of it. He's got all the razzle dazzle to become a star except that he's got no kill in his game. Looks pretty, but can't shoot, can't finish, doesn't defend. He draws attention to himself with a nifty handle, a dexterous move, then simply passes the ball.

Sweets is another puzzle. Any player who can dominate in the Big East is worth a peek. He actually managed to score a bit at the NBA level before he ate his way out the league. Defense (and fouls rate) was his shortfall-- or widefall.

It's always interesting in SummerCamp to see how badly Anthony Randolph will absolutely destroy the league, eventually, you know, when he stops sorta sucking. He's gonna be evolutionary, as an, um, undersized too-skinny forward. He'll be like Kevin Durant, crossed with Kevin Garnett interbred with Tracy McGrady, when he finishes developing into a player who is actually not mediocre-ish.

Actually there's a swarm of players in this game that pique my interest beyond the Wiz' new picks. Since I always root for the underdog (Go Wiz...) I'd love to see Jerome Randle make it to the next level. SummerLeague would be great if the quality of play didn't always totally suck. And the players. Well, it would be great if the players lived up to our hopes and dreams and prognostications. Then it would really be something to see.

But the easy prediction is: The top highlight from the game will be the Wall-to-McGee alley oop hammerdunk.

Pine's back?

That should be thread worthy in and of itself. I know that there's all this LeBron hoopla going on but you'd think we'd have heard that the world had been saved.

Yep. All downhill for him and the other K.Brown that starred in that Shaw League in 2001. :(

Kedrick Brown was never much after that, either. But both he and Kwame looked great in that game and in that league.

who could forget Hall of Famer Macro Belineilli who lit up summer league like he was Mike Jordan. I remember being so pissed that we took Nick Young over him especially in light of how he played in the Summer

Booker and Wall have signed, per Mike Lee. Not really sure what thread to put that in, but this one works.

Nice to get it done!
