The link about the French sprinter notes the first (black) American to run sub-10 was Jim Hines, back in 1968. (Forty year gap is hard to believe...) Jim Hines wasn't a good football player for the team that drafted him. He ran 9.95 and for 15 years was the only man under 10 seconds. But check this out, nate.

Unfortunately, Hines did not have the football skills to match his speed and spent the 1968 season on the practice squad. He was given the nickname "Oops" due to his lack of football skill.[1] He appeared in 10 games with Miami in 1969 catching just two passes for 23 yards, rushed the ball one time for seven yards and returned one kickoff for 22 yards. Hines then appeared in one game with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1970. He never played pro football again.

He's faster at his age than Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Carl Lewis and Usain Bolt were. Jamaica’s Yohan Blake, who is one year older than Lemaître, last year clocked 9.93 seconds for 100m to set a world age-19 best.

His form needs a lot of work, but to run that time on pure talent alone is saying something. His stride frequency is a thing of beauty though, like Asafa Powell's.

Good for him, he's young and he has loads of space for improvement, but they need to chill on the "He's ready to take on the Big Guns" talk. He's not anywhere near sniffing the Holy Trinity of Bolt-Gay-Asafa. His winning 100m tme would have been good for last place in the Beijing 100m final.
