Gil's antics thread

Post#1 » by leswizards » Wed Oct 13, 2010 9:43 pm

I know this has been discussed in the Gil Shrine thread, but I don't want to get yelled at for posting anything potentially negative about Gil in that thread.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=a ... fakeinjury

I guess this answers whether Flip knew about the injury or not.

From my perspective, Nick got 15, 17 and 17 minutes in the first 3 games. It is nothing spectacular, but it was more than enough for Nick to show what he can do. Nick shouldn't have been complaining about his minutes, and Gil shouldn't have been faking an injury to force Flip's hand. However, now that it has been done, Nick looked better at SF than Gil has looked at SG so far this preseason, so stick with it and teach Gil a lesson.

Nick looked better? Really?

Starting Nick instead of Gil does not help the Wizards one iota.

Don't be such a wuss. Just chime in on the shrine thread and take the beating. Well, no beatings anymore. You missed that opportunity.

But serious. Dude. As long as your being reasonable, post your thoughts. Its a bulletin board.

Does anyone think that Gil's "injury" was related to the insult of not being named a Captain or, at least, a Co-Captain???

Tiny I am going to back off that speculation. I heard Gil's explanation and will take it for why he did it--to get Nick Young minutes.

Doubt it. It was just a few years ago that Gilbert didn't want to be the captain when they gave it to him.

Ruzious wrote:Gil's probably going to take as much crap for his blaming the media line as he did for faking the injury. Gil, if you can't edit yourself before speaking, just don't speak.

But to the folks who say - Gilbert's nuts, and that's why we love him... sorry, but that's pathetic. If you love the guy, you don't want him to make a fool out of himself. If you really care about him, you don't want him to look like a clown to the rest of the world.

It's only a tiny bit different than what most people have actually said, but it's a big tiny difference. The gun thing wasn't lovable; sure it was blown ridiculously out of proportion, but it could have gotten further out of hand (if say, Crittendon started firing), had extreme consequences regardless, and Arenas was at the center of it. If he hadn't brought the guns...end of story. That's the worst, but he bears at least partial responsibility in other areas (defense, the willfulness of his rehab), and is answerable to his fans.

I don't think of Arenas as stupid (because he's not), but very immature, with some big blind spots that have repeatedly caused him trouble. Maybe he is bipolar or has some other classified psychological condition, but that's not my field. I'm occasionally amused by Arenas' antics, but if I want laughs, I'll go to the comedy club. It's not that funny. I'm here for basketball, and he brought the most exciting ball I've seen here in years. He scores bonus points by clearly having a big and generous heart, and even when he's effing up he's not malicious. Still, that immaturity has hurt him and the team.

Based on what I've read, I think a wide range of Arenas fans could relate to at least some of this. Only voyeurs love him because of his behavior. He's often a headache, but he's a talented headache and he's our headache. The season can't start soon enough, and no more fake injuries, and I hope his game returns and allows him a release he's missed for so long, so he'll just shut up and play, which is when I like him best.

I love Gil's antics. That's what makes him a one of a kind human being, it's Gil being Gil.

What if the Wiz won the lottery last year and made Blake and Miller the Captains of the team, would that have been disrepectful to Arenas, Jamison and Butler? I think Blatche did a good job last year and deserves the same respect they would've given Jamison and Butler. He should've been named a captain this year. It's NOT FAIR! Saunders keep up this mess, he'll lose the respect of this team. I haven't heard an interview where he's not mentioning Garnett's name.

Kelly Dwyer nailed it, I think.

I have nothing against any fans who are sick of Arenas' antics at this point. I mean, honestly, if it were some other player on some other team who had been doing all the stuff he has over the years, I think I'd be more than sick of them. What if it was LeBron who just faked an injury, how many of us would be giving him the same "Oh pish posh, no harm done" treatment?

As for me, I haven't really cared in a long while. Arenas has been with us for years and will be with us for years to come, so allowing myself to get in a tizzy every time he does an "antic", good or bad, quirky or weird, funny or eye-roll-inducing, seems like a waste of energy. I'll stick to caring about what he does for us on the court in the games that actually count and leave the in-depth discussion of the outside stuff to others.

From the article:
There is, unequivocally and absolutely, nothing wrong with sitting out a preseason game in order to let Nick Young work as a starter. If you go about the appropriate channels, there is no story here. There shouldn't be a story.

This is why it frustrates me so much. All this drama was so unnecessary.

Later in the article it mentions that Arenas will likely need to take some games and practices off. That he will face increased scrutiny when he does is probably the worst part of this incident. Another issue is overshadowing the story of a promising preseason from Arenas and the Wizards. Ironically allowing Nick Young to play starters minutes and perform well, is an encouraging sign from the preseason.
