Next years roster assuming: Howard, Thornton, Armstrong & Yi are not invited back.
PG: Wall,
SG: Young, Hinrich
SF: Lewis, Martin?
PF: Blatche, Booker, Seraphin
C: JaVale, Ndiaye
Holes everywhere, who would you target?

Well, Dwight Howard should be here in 2012 right? So I guess we're not signing anyone this off-season while we tidy up for Dwight.

I've given up hope that the Wiz can acquire Dwight...he's already talking about moving to LA and joining the Lakers. We'll see how that works out, but he has his mind set on much bigger and better things than trying to bring the Wiz out of the celler.

There isn't going to be cap room in LA, NY, or Miami. If he's looking to move, he may have to look at us and th Nets. Whether or not he is likely to come, we need to try to develop Wall and lut in pieces that could make us attractive to Dwight. If he doesn't come we haven't lost that much as long we don't pass on keeping JaVale or on grabbing another great center if they come availabke.

Splitting hairs, but I'd say it looks more like this:
PG: Wall, Hinrich
SG: Young
SF: Lewis
PF: Blatche, Booker
C: JaVale, Seraphin
Hinrich is a better PG than SG; Seraphin can only play center; and N'Diaye and Martin do not have guaranteed contracts next year. We'll also have our lotto pick.

Afflalo and Battier. Both are solid lockeroom, productive, bench guys. The Wizards fornt court needs to have minutes open for the young guys so I don't think they need to add anybody who's expecting playing time.

Two years out it didn't look like the Lakers had cap space to land Shaq in 97, but they made a series of moves and also acquired Kobe that same off-season. If NYK saved their max space powder until 2012, rather than using it after this season, they'd have space to sign Howard. Clearly the Heat won't have space unless they move Bosh, which I could see Howard working well with Dwade and LeWhine as he's a pretty big tool.

Why are we assuming Howard is not coming back? I like his game, think he fits well on this team, and he seems to like the city.

All the guys that are on 1 year deals should not come back. Just my opinion. Clear as much salary as you can. Howard has played like 5 games this year. Why bring him back?
What I'd do with Nick Young is bring him back on the qualifying offer. I'm not ready to give him an extension just yet. This is the one and only year Young has really broken out.
Second, we need a bruser down low. A Jeff Foster type, someone who can put the ball in the basket but also rebound. A 9 and 6 guy off the bench.
Third, we need a long term solution at small forward.
Looking at the list hoopsworld provided, nothing really jumped out, and I took a look at the 3s and based on that, Josh Howard and Al Thornton may be the best of the bunch.

Im for keeping Nick Young (never thought id say that). Of course there is the worry that he is just playing well in a contract year, but he meshes with Wall perfectly. What other SGs that fit well are available? Actually, I wouldnt mind Afflalo, as he is a 3 and D guy, is still young. JR Smith is available but he will probably cost more, is similar to Nick, and i think overall id prefer Nick.
Im for keeping Thornton (at least until Booker develops). But i dont think id go too far over the qualifying offer.
Josh Howard is too injury prone and im sure he will bolt for a contender.
Who we go after really depends on what area of concern we address through the draft. But a couple of guys i wouldnt mind (for the right price):
Chuck Hayes. Not sure how available he would be, undersized, but he could sure teach our bigs a thing or two about position and footwork.
Kurt Thomas. As above.
Reggie Evans. Rebounding. That is all.
I dont think any of the bigger names would be available without overspending.

I moved Kirk to SG, my personal bias/preference

. I put question-mark by Martin, depending on who we draft, he would be cheap bench-filler in the likely event that Howard and Thornton are not extended.
Re: N'Diaye, we drafted him and now he's in the D-League, I think he'll be our cheapie 3rd Center on the bench after Armstrong is gone. Serpahin is raw-enough that we could school him into a PF/C role IMO.
Non bank-busting FA's I would like to see this team consider: (Subject to change after the draft)
PG:
Sebastian Telfair
Aaron Miles
SG:
Gary Forbes - A guy who worked his way into the NBA, possible pinch from Denver
PF: (I would try to trade Booker)
Jeff Adrien - Has made huge strides, a true post-banger not afraid of the post and can score around the basket.
Josh McRoberts - McBob is a dirty scrapper, he might be available for cheap
SF:
Eark Clark ( check him out at-least)
DaJuan Summers ( Never got a chance in DET and he's a strong SF who can shoot the trey)

I don't think the Wizards are going to sign any free agents worth getting excited about. I expect Kirk to be moved at the trade deadline. I also expect Howard, Yi, and Thornton to either be moved at the trade deadline or for the cap space that comes from their expiring contracts to be used in a BYOD deal similiar to the Kirk move last off season. These moves should net 2 first round picks in the range of 17-23. Consequenly, I expect the roster to look like this next season:
PGs: Wall, late first round pick
SGs: Young, late first round pick
SFs: Lewis, lottery pick
PFs: Blatche, Booker
Cs: McGee, Seraphin
Consequently, I only expect Hilton Armstrong type signings this off season.

I think the Wizards would like Howard back, but I don't see any way they'd offer anything longer than a 1-year contract. Howard is too old and injury prone to keep gambling on 1-year offers. I figure he'd sign with whoever gives him the most generous long-term contract. Either that or he'll join a title contender.

At his age, Afflalo will surely be looking for a long-term contract. I don't think the Wizards would pay long term money and sacrifice free agency plans in 2012 just to acquire a backup SG.
Battier might be an interesting pick up. Other teams would probably offer him a longer contract than we would, but maybe we can overpay him to play here on a 1-year deal. On the other hand, SF is our one position where we already have the "veteran mentor" (Lewis). We'd probably be better off trying to find a young SF either through the draft or free agency. I'd certainly rather add Chandler instead of Battier if possible.

Wilson Chandler is going to cost an arm and a leg and we don't know if he's a product of D'Antoni's system or just a really good player.

We will surely extend the QO, but that only gives us the right to match another offer. Someone is sure to come along and extend a better offer than that. The question is: if that offers is roughly the full MLE, do we match?

It's a risk. Is there any way you can bring up players that are or have posted similar stats that Young is putting up? And from there, I guess we can take a look at what kind of contracts they are getting.
MLE is too much money. That's what...almost $6 million a year?

McBobs is the player you mentioned that I'd look at. Afterall, we need under-achieving bigs of all colors.

Seriously, I thought he'd be a better pro than Hansbrough when they were freshmen at Duke and UNC. I don't know what's held him back - He's got nice size and strength, nice athleticism, nice touch with some range, he's an excellent passer, doesn't turn the ball over much, and can play with a mean streak. But some intangible is missing and dude always seemed to look unhappy. And sure enough - he's now seemingly in the Indy doghouse - losing out to his old nemesis - Hansbrough. He's still just 23ish. If the light goes on, he can certainly make the step up that Humphreys has made with NJ. He's got a halfway decent PER of 14 plus, so there's something to build on. I'd definitely make an effort to get him.

Here's a list of NBA swing men 6-3 to 6-8, who, in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th season, managed to average 18 points per 36 or better, with a TS% of .550 or better, and with an assist percentage below 10% (which is roughly 2.2 assists per game, give or take). It's not an overly impressive list, but it's not awful either:
