Youth Hoops Camps

I heard good things about a camp called Point Guard College.

Just wondering how many RealGMers have specific knowledge
of any of the competing summer camps for kids.

I have a daughter (13 - 8th grade) who is playing on a travel team
this year. She is still quite small for her age but has good skills
due to our getting her with a coach running the Hoops the Right Way
program nearby.

The Point Guard College looks good in their ads/website but is
not cheap at ~$1000 bucks for a 5 day 'residential' camp.

Not sure how hard I should encourage her as far as going
to this camp. She has some reluctance but I think she would
end up loving it if she went. They have a session in Harrisonburg
in late June that would work ok with the rest of our family schedule.

I sent my 11-year-old niece to the Wizards holiday camp (they held it at GMU) and she loved it. It was like $200 for 3 days, non-residential. Several of the Mystic players were on the staff, and Kevin Grevey was one of the shooting instructors.

On a personal note, I spent many summers of my adolescence attending various area hoops camps and had some incredible experiences. And I got to play with/learn from some amazing people. At the GMU camp (then called the Northern Virginia Basketball School, run by then-WT Woodson HS coach Red Jenkins) by random draw I somehow lucked into playing on a team with Grant Hill. Our coach was Billy King (now Nets GM). Not sure if Jenkins still runs a camp, but if he does, that would be one worth looking into - he's a great teacher.

The only "residential" camp I attended was the one at Navy, which, at the time, was run by Paul Evans. It was a great skills camp, but sort of "hard-core" in a "drop and give me twenty" kinda way. It would be a great camp for "discipline-challenged" kids.

I worked for Dan Harwood (he has won at least one state title at JRo's alma mater -- Magruder) at his summer camp when I was in college. Great camp. Kids had a ton of fun an learned a lot.

Great guest speakers -- Pete Strickland (Coastal Carolina back then), Billy WHitaker (Gonzaga assisstant, maybe? My memory is fuzzy), Glenn Consor, Jerome Williams, Tracey Jackson, Spinny Johnson (still doing youth stuff in the area. Former globetrotter and a great guy).

There's also a company called One on One basketball run by a great teacher named Jonathon Scribner. I think they do camps now too.
