Mustafa Shakur, a 6-foot-3 point guard, is expected to be called up from the NBA D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers to the Washington Wizards for a 10-day contract, according to a source close to the situation.

Shakur, in an interview with FanHouse on Friday night, said that he expected to be available to play in Washington's game Saturday night at home against the Boston Celtics.

"Hopefully, if everything goes right with my flights, I'll get there and get situated and then be ready to play against the Celtics," Shakur told FanHouse.

Ernie has been reading our posts (*cough*, my posts) I guess MArtin or Neck is gone, that would explain Neck not playing of-late.

Ernie has been reading our posts (*cough*, my posts) I guess MArtin or Neck is gone, that would explain Neck not playing of-late.

Yeah, Ernie hadn't even heard of the D-League until you started posting incessantly about it.

I would have liked to have seen Kyle Weaver, but Shakur is worth a shot...

I remember him. He was the point guard on that talented but under-achieving Arizona team with Channing Frye, Andre Iggy, and an athletic tough 6'4 college PF who was drafted but whose name flew out of my head. He was a good pure PG who couldn't shoot very well. He kinda reminded me of a poor man's Rod Strickland.

Word from Givony and those who follow the D-Legaue is that Shakur's games has really matured in the last couple of years. We shall see.

"They were actually interested in me since last year but I ended up signing with Oklahoma City," Shakur remembered. "They've shown a lot of interest in me since then."

Knowing Washington might have a need for a third point guard, Wizards Vice President of Basketball Administration Tommy Sheppard scouted last week's D-League Showcase where Shakur earned Second Team All-Showcase honors.

"They're bringing me in because they like me, I guess. We haven't really talked about what I'll focus on yet, but I'm excited to go," Shakur said. "As soon as I get there I'm going right to the gym so we'll probably go over plays and get right to it

."

Hmm, could Kirk be part of an up-coming trade?

Shakur is strong, experienced, and not afraid to shoot PG.....very timely addition.

Is Scottie Reynolds still in the D-League? If so, I'm surprised his name isn't mentioned more what with the local connection and all, and the added benefit of the ticket sales to Cramer alone.

talk about thin-slice but i've never been very impressed with shakur (or frye) after that superhyped 'zona team lost to UVa back in '05. BUT.... 6 years is a long time, and it's a marginal move so... what they hey. go for it.

Not a good-enough PG...wasn't even mentioned as a top prospect coming out of the Showcase, but Shakur was.

Or they are concerned that Kirk's injury could keep him out a while.

I read this last night and knew that someone would be thinking trade - it's possible, but it's just as likely that the team realized they needed a 3rd guy who can play decent PG, cut Lester (who couldn't), and have been looking around to be able to make a solid choice instead of being forced into whatever when one of our actual PGs went down again.

That's him. Adams played inside better than Frye did - even though Frye was 6 inches taller.

Speaking of D League, Danny Green is expected to clear waivers on Tuesday and make a comeback in the D League. I still say dude will have a successful NBA career.

Did we have an open roster spot? This could be a 10 day try out for both Hudson and Shakur.

If we had to cut someone, I doubt it's Cartier or Neck. Both have proven to give more substance and value than Hudson. Hudson has stunk every time he's been on the court.

Good game tonight, 5 assists and 0 turnovers. I like this kid already, he can push the ball and seems pretty quick

Hudson should be packing his bags right now. He had his chance.

Give it up for Shakur, stepping off the plane and contributing. Ernie should have called-up someone like Shakur the last time when he went with Hudson a 2nd time, but it's all-good.

Can we please get Shakur a REAL jersey, not one that looks like it was bought from the sale rack at Target??

Obviously this relates to Hiney's injury, but the he real thing is we can only sign this guy for two ten day contracts until we'd have to guarantee the whole season. However, as we're a Nick Young injury away from being in an emergency situation at shooting guard too, it's hard to come up with an actual solution considering that we only have one more roster slot. When you basically have 11 front court players, you're rather hamstrung for options.

The surprise was that we didn't cut Hamady when his contract wasn't guaranteed - that would have given us a lot more flexibility as cutting guaranteed guys mid-season due to roster imbalance is not the sort of thing front offices generally like to do.

Really, the best way to get out of the roster imbalance is a minor trade of bench players.
