Go Wiz!
John Wall wins Eastern Conference rookie of the month By Michael Lee
John Wall finally ended the stranglehold that New York Knicks guard Landy Fields had on the Eastern Conference rookie of the month honors, as the No. 1 overall pick was awarded the honor on Tuesday for the month of January.
Wall averaged 13.9 points and 10.5 assists, but more importantly, he played in every game, although he was admittedly pushing through pain in his left foot, both knees, and sports a deep gash inside his left thumb from a floor burn.
His production in his first two months of the season had been overshadowed by injuries that sidelined him for 12 of the first 27 games. But he had a memorable January, in which became the first rookie in NBA history to have at least nine assists in 10 straight games. He also had 164 assists in the month, which were the most by a rookie since Mark Jackson had 172 assists for the Knicks in 1988.
Wall played in all 16 games in January, and collected 10 double-doubles, as the Wizards went 5-11. Jackson holds the record for most double doubles by a rookie guard since Jackson had 12 in March, 1988. He had five games with 13 or more assists, and ranks fifth in the league in assists at 9.3 per game.
Wall scored 22 points with nine rebounds in a win over Sacramento, had 19 points and a career-high 15 assists in a win over Utah, and scored 16 points -- including the game-winning three-pointer -- in a victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics. He arguably had a better month in October/November, when he averaged 18 points and 9.1 assists, but he also missed six games because of a sprained left foot.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin, the front-runner for rookie of the year, won Western Conference rookie of the month for the third time. Griffin averaged 26 points, 13.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

The pass he threw last night to Thornton > this award IMO. That sh** was niiiice.
Hopefully last night was a sign of things to come. He didn't put up a huge statline but to me it was the best game he has played in weeks.

Is Blake the most dominant rookie since Duncan?

As I said in another thread, Blake is having one of the best rookie years in recent history. But that doesn't mean Wall isn't doing a phenomenal job as well.

He's certainly the most dominant 2nd year rookie.

Check this out: Blake is a better rookie than either Barkley or Karl Malone were.
It's a little unfair to compare him to a hybrid C/PF like Timmy. Blake cannot impact games defensively because he's not as long as an octopus, like Duncan. Blake likewise is not as long as Hakeem, but if he were, he'd be the very same caliber player. He's kind of like Hakeem mixed Shawn Kemp mixed with a more conventional PF like a Terry Cummings. Griffin is really impressive.
It's easy to say that Griffin will be a top-3 player within a couple years if he stays healthy. He's a legit future league MVP candidate. Legit future HOFer ..... IF he stays healthy.

As for Wall, I'm thinking this might be the first of THREE East Rookie of the Month awards for Wall.
I like the rotation on the three against Dallas. I like that he's squaring up on his shot. I think he's taken his lumps and that his young legs should kick in around the time the rest of the league is slowing down.
I've talked BAD about John Wall, but dude's got superstar genetics. He's gotta get tougher mentally--and that definitely will happen.

If Wall played every game--which isn't a legit excuse--he would have 3 ROTM awards.

How does this impact his stock for being an All-Star reserve? Sure, his team stinks. But he's still Top 5 in APG last time I checked and this shows that people are noticing. I think that 12th spot on the East team is up for grabs.

Felton gets the nod over Wall for being a Knick and for being on a better team. It'd be cool, but Wall isn't dominant enough. I wouldn't vote for him, though I'd love to see him participate.

I kinda hope he doesn't make it. I want him to feel like he has to work for it.

Wall was just named to play in the rookie challenge (no surprise there) at the all star game. At least he'll be there at all-star weekend.

So Wall's had a good day--the Rookie Challenge invite and the ROTM award. Hopefully he leads the team to their first road W tonight, because good things come in 3s.

i forget which game it was (but it was about a month ago) john had a sequence of several possessions just before the end of a quarter where he went from the typical nba fast pace - and then he suddenly switched into turbo overdrive... leading into the buzzer (believe the last shot was by kent).
for about 4 possessions he looked like bionic man out there.
sitting in my seat i didnt know what the f happened so i know the other team didnt either.

Good job by Wall, but i am not happy with the scoring numbers. The season is basically over so it is time to start shooting about 15 shots a games even if he isn't efficient, this will probably lead to a faster development.

It puts it all in perspective when you think about his age. Wall is twenty years old. 2 years removed from High School. He played 1 year of college. Take any other PG out of college let alone high school and you will not see close to that production. And he isn`t even healthy.
The guy will be one of the very best players in the NBA very soon. I mean, I think Blake Griffin is great. But people need to remember, he played 2 years of college, had 1 year of being in an NBA environment, and worked out with NBA trainers daily. Also, he plays PF, which is not the weakest position in the NBA but certainly not the strongest. Whereas PG is clearly the toughest position to play and learn, on top of the fact that the NBA is going through a golden era of PG`s.
Once again, it is quite scary to think what the guy will be like even next year.
