Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed swingman Othyus Jeffers from the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy to a 10-day contract. Jeffers (6-5, 200), a two-time D-League All-Star (2009, 2011) and the 2009 D-League Rookie of the Year, has averaged 21.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists this season through 38 games (18 double-doubles) with Iowa.

Jeffers has also appeared in 15 NBA games over two seasons after being called up by the Utah Jazz in 2009-10 and the San Antonio Spurs this season. He will wear uniform #12.

Apparently, Dray won't be the only "bulletproof" player on the team. From Wikipedia:

Just a few weeks after being named all-conference, Jeffers was shot while attempting to defend his sister in a fight with her boyfriend. As a result of the shooting and his conflicts with UIC coach Jimmy Collins, Jeffers opted to transfer to Illinois' Robert Morris University for his senior year.

We have a spot and we could certainly use another body right now.

This guy is going to be awful. But we all know that already.

Lots of 30% shooting nights in the D-League.

I would expect his percentages to go up within the Wizards more structured and polished offensive system. . .

if the Spurs organization saw something worth calling him up in the past, maybe there's something there. i'm all for taking shots on their sloppy seconds considering our state of affairs.

 I was just going to say, we are getting the Spurs sloppy seconds. The Spurs tried-out several D-League guys, but appear to have settled on Danny Green. I would rather we run-through these guys early like the Spurs do rather than wait for injuries. Whatever, this guy will probably get scant minutes anyway.

Edit: The Spurs also signed Steve Novak for the remainder of the year from the NBDL.

$10 says they just give him an old Jeffries jersey.

They would have, except they decided it was too costly to buy more mothballs. So they'll just use old Wallace jerseys and invest in a thick Sharpie.

Anyone else looking at the tea leaves and thinking that this might mean that NY's knee may not be doing well, and that he is going to miss more time?

If Young and Martin are out I don't think the team can rely on another 48 minute performance out of Jordan Crawford. Jeffers can at least slash and rebound well for a 2-guard. He probably won't even shoot much.

Jeffers hasn`t shown much in two games. He has shown that he can play tough D, and REBOUND! He came in against Toronto played 11+ minutes and ended up with 5 or 6 rebounds.

Yi played 33+ and only ended up with 4. Really shows that our bigger guards have no excuse not to pull 5 or 6 boards down a game.

A 2nd 10-day awarded, 21 minutes and zero points last night. A warm body out-there I suppose.

He played pretty good defense on Monta Ellis when he was in there. At the very least he's hardworking on the defensive end.
