While I think this is likely more of a courtesy interview, I could certainly see Sam impressing enough to be a realistic candidate.

Here are some other names they are supposedly considering:

UPDATE: According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 Sports in Houston, current Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell will also interview for the Rockets' job next week.

---

The Houston Chronicle reports general manager Daryl Morey will spend this week interviewing candidates for the head coach vacancy.

Tuesday, Milwaukee assistant coach Kelvin Sampson will meet with Morey. On Wednesday, it's Mario Elie's turn, along with Rockets assistant coach Jack Sikma. And on Thursday, former Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson will try to convince Morey that he should be hired.

According to the newspaper, Morey is also interested in the following assistant coaches: Dallas' Dwane Casey, Boston's Lawrence Frank, Dean Demopoulos of the Clippers, Memphis' Dave Joeger and San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer.

Morey has not scheduled an interview yet with former Cleveland head coach Mike Brown.

If the Rockets hired Joeger, how many folks on this board would jump off the nearest bridge?

Budenholzer I think is a really talented coach as well.

If you're a Wizards fan, you've already passed up many opportunities to jump.

I first felt the urge to jump in the RealGM era when I posted "Don't draft Kwame, try and trade the for Battier and another first and pick Zach Randolph or Troy Murphy." That was 10 years ago when it made all the sense in the world to get Battier from what he'd projected at Duke and Zach Randolph fresh off an NCAA Championship at Michigan State. I could post at least 5 more big time moments where I felt the Wizards let opportunities slip by or they committed to the wrong course of action. Add to that probably another 10-15 minor gaffes.

Not hiring Joerger as an NBA head coach will be worse than not hiring Thibs. That guy was like a Kobe Bryant would be in the D-League. Way too good for the minor leagues or the assistant ranks.

I know the Wizards have millions wrapped up over the next 2 seasons with Saunders but IMO I'd rather see them hire Joerger than I would see them draft Derrick Williams. If they got BOTH this team would be the next OKC starting next season.

However, I expect Joerger will never be Wizards coach. Almost 40 years as a Bullets/Wizards fan has taught me to curb my enthusiasm when I am tempted to expect the best and to also suspend my disbelief when the worst happens. Things are better under Ted, and EG is making great moves, but he's not going to leave that much money on the table to get a new coach in a rebuilding year with a lockout looming.

I just hope Joerger doesn't get hired before the end of next season.

CCJ -- I was with you on trading that pick instead of taking Kwame. I wanted to trade the pick plus Rip Hamilton for Elton Brand and the #4, which I would have used on Battier. Oh well.

Houston has a pretty good list of coaches they're interviewing. Several of my pals around the league have told me that Demopolous is terrific. He might be a good fit with Morey because he stat guy. Same with Casey, apparently. Budenholzer is supposed to be good. I thought the Wizards should have hired Joerger when they hired Flip.

If they hire from this group, they'll get someone good.

Keith Smart out in GS. Maybe Cassell gets an interview there, too?

I think Houston brought in a good group of candidates for head coach.

Hopefully they think Cassell is second best :) Assuming he is not hired away, I think having him in the group of candidates is a good sign of his coaching ability.
