Dwight Howard will become a free agent

report today
According to Scott Howard-Cooper, Dwight Howard will definitely become a free agent rather than signing an extension with Orlando.
Howard expressed his desire to stay in Orlando, but stressed the importance that he wants to see the team win a championship before putting pen to paper and signing an extension to remain with the team. This news just adds fuel to the fire that Howard is considering playing elsewhere, but above all, his desire to win a championship remains priority number one.
Having Cap space means nothing if you cant sign a free agent like Dwight Howard.
How do we convince him to come here? I think we have a much better framework for him to win a title than Orlando
1) We have a stud point guard
2) we have cap space
3) No killer contracts except for Rashard Lewis
4) Up and coming players
5) 3 lottery picks(2 this year and 1 next year)
I think Howard could make us an instant contender in 2012 where we could win 60 games

Hmmmm, I actually do think this is worth it's own thread.
Even if we couldn't get him, some teams would look to just dump salary in order to get into the running and we might be able to pilfer a bit as an enabler.

I've alread posted a number of trade down scenarios where we get expirings for guys like Lewis or Blatche. Those options are even more viable now IMO.

What would the Wizards do with McGee?
Keep him as a super sub? S&T him for Howard? Use him as trade bait for an upgrade at another position or to clear cap space?

Plus, wouldn't he demand Chris Whitney's old number? That's a non-starter for me.

I'd trade damn near the whole team for him. Except Wall and Crawford...
Teddy would have to do the sell job of a lifetime to get him here though. Doesn't his ex live in the area?

maybe we dont have to trade for him...if he is signing as a free agent. We dont have the assets to trade for him so a pure FA signing is the only chance we have. Plus if you trade good assets to get him, he will be in the same situation he would be in Orlando
Wall and Ted have to sell this. This is what Ted has been working for. Its his time to shine and get this done

Trade McGee, 6th and 18th for Derrick Williams. Sign Howard.
Wall
Crawford
Williams
Lewis
Howard
Championship!
(See, wasn't that easy?)

Well, they would certainly win the 3-on-3 tourney during All-Star Weekend.

I've been thinking a bit about the comments Derrick Rose made about PED's being a, "huge problem" in the NBA. Look at Howard. Does anyone here think there isn't a close to 100% chance he has been using PED's? If they ever clean the league up, and Howard has to stop juicing, he could really suffer, both in terms of size/performance, but also in terms of becoming susceptible to recurrent soft tissue injuries.
Regarding trading for Williams and adding Howard, obviously we would wind up very good. Honestly, if we trade up for Williams, how could Howard not look really closely at coming here. Wall, Howard and Williams would make a dynamic trio. Honestly, with Wall and Williams on rookie contracts, if a hard cap isn't put in place, we could sign Howard and another big name FA in 2013, and be right up there with any team in the league.
Pipe dreams probably, but still fun to think about. The first part of this plan is soon to be shot down. I really, really doubt that we trade up for Williams.

Hold on. I'm confused. I was told a long time ago when was forecasting a plan for the team that there was no way ever that Howard could end up in Washington. Now I didn't say we would get him but the option was clearly off the table. As I was told by our experts and no experts alike.
You mean he future isn't cast in stone ? Must be the release of the final Harry Potter changing everything.
