Also, Big Z does, in fact, have a ninja turtle face.

In retrospect, the jersey with a leading zero and tiny decimal point was prescient.
And mean.

The circle of humiliation is complete, Leonard is the series MVP and Jan Vesely will bust out of the league.

Yep I think Ves is done in the NBA. I could see another team offering the minimum to take a flyer but he's probably going to have big offers to go back and play in his home country. Why would we pass up being a hero in his home country to rot on a bench in the US?

Flip Saunders said the Wizards identified Vesely "a few years ago" as a guy they wanted. Grunfeld elaborated on that, saying the Wizards had followed him for "three years, at least." He added that they "intensified that process" the last couple years, when Vesely was potentially draft-eligible. He even said that they would have considered taking him last year had he stayed in the draft and had the Wizards not won the lottery.

As I've written more than once, I would have picked Leonard in 2011 -- but sort of with a sigh and the thought that there was just no one better to take at that spot. He looked like a sure thing to be a solid NBA player, but like most others (apparently Popovich not included!) I didn't anticipate he'd become a star.
Popovich traded George Hill, a guy he liked a lot and valued pretty highly, for the opportunity to pick Leonard #15 -- and how the guy dropped that far I really don't understand.
I think Ernie's 2011 draft must be among the worst any team has had in the era of modern media (i.e. that let you take a close look at pretty much all available players before the draft). Passing on Leonard isn't even the worst of his work that year. His total focus on Vesely, his pick of Singleton, a guy who there was really no reason whatever to think would be a good NBA player given his college numbers, and in a way worst of all his complete waste of the only even a little bit good pick he made -- Shelvin Mack -- who has actually become a solid journeyman backup point guard and whom Ernie waived!
I wanted Chandler Parsons at that pick, as I've also written here before; the value there was extraordinary given his college numbers. But I didn't and don't think Mack was an awful pick. But we wasted him!
Then we wasted a high R2 pick in 2012 (and had discarded a lower one that could have brought us a terrific young big, Kyle O'Quinn) and followed that up by wasting our '13 R2 pick, when we had a chance to pick a very solid prospect at a position of need (backup point guard)!
Oh well... I suppose it's pointless to keep staring at the holes our dog of a GM dug in the garden.

2011 was a very strange draft. Usually a draft is a mix of "drafted about right", "busts" and "steals". 2011 was so many busts and most of the best players were steals(Leonard, Faried, Jimmy Butler, Parsons and Isaiah Thomas) from the mid-1st or later.
Jonas V, Shumpert and the Morris twins seem to be about the only players who were drafted where they should have been, although the players around them would be completely different.

The board here was dead right on Vesely; there was a strong consensus that he would be a bad pick with our 1st DC. I remember a generally good vibe on Singleton who looked like a good defensive forward with decent rebounding from the 3 that (like Kwahi Leonard) if he could develop a 3, would be a solid 3 and D NBA player. Kawhi developed that shot, Singleton didn't, but I don't remember any consensus that Singleton would be a bust.
Was Vesely called the White Ninja because he turns invisible for large stretches in games? And if he didn't have bad baggage here, I'd be willing to sign him cheap for a bench energy guy. I didn't see much energy out of Singleton.

I believe the problem of Singleton was that he lost his play time to develop.
I saw signs of a great bench player in him when he was starting. He just needed that extra development. But Wizards flipped the switch to playoff mode and never sent him to the D league. So no room to develop pretty much. Wizards are a badly organized team at its core of staff members.
