Roger Mason Jr. expected to sign one-year deal with Wizards
The deal is expected to be for one year at the veteran minimum.

Been told Roger Mason's signing would have no affect on Nick Young. None at all. Team needs depth & more veterans. He provides both.

He's a scrub now, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have a vet that's had experience with a few successful organizations.

agreed and for the vet min its a decent signing... and he does provided some outside shooting we desperately need.

Given that he's not being signed to be rotation guy I really like this signing since Jr. Is a quality guy and should be a good role model.

Great signing. Low risk, high reward.
The reward is that it makes it less possible for us to overpay anyone.

I would rather have gotten Mo Evans.
What has Roger done recently ? Not much.
But he is a nice enough fella.
I guess this would be the first sign that they are going for a tank year.
No center added is the real key I'm looking at though.

Dat, no way Cleveland, Toronto, and Bobcats are better than the Wiz this year. Add Hornets when they trade CP3 for the Minny pick, Minny themselves, and potentially the Bucks.

Don't doubt the tank, lol. Remember how bad we were last season? Only four teams had a worst record. We only won 4 more games than Cleveland did and they added a #1 pick and a #4 pick. Toronto only won one game less than we did. Minny added arguably the best player in the college last season. It's not like we added a boatload of talent either.
Bottom line, the lottery race is wide open. I like our chances of sucking. Only thing stopping it if Wall turns into superman or McGee or Blatche suddenly decides to give a ****.

Eight players with a year or less experience. Lewis getting half the team's salary. The madcap trio of McGee, Blatche, and Young. Mason will seem like the wise and reasonable one. S'Tank

Good defender, probably a good vet. signing provided saunders gives minutes to the young guns first over Roger. Hopefully Crafword etc. pick up some of his better traits.

Outside shooting and vet leadership are big needs for this team. I doubt he was getting huge amounts of interest, but it isn't a bad sign that he was willing to sign early.

McGee is in a contract year. But in his case that probably means he'll try to play point guard more often.
However. We no longer have Yi for Flip to turn to when we really need a veteran tank anchor to jack 18 footers and fail to grab key rebounds. That means more minutes for Booker. I'm less sanguine about our ability to tank effortlessly. It's going to take a little effort some nights. Or the usual run or bad luck. Or, heaven forfend, our medical and training staff. Pray for mercy.

I can't call a pure tank just yet.
Rogers makes little difference in game play if they sign Nick. Wall, Craw and Nick would get most of those minutes. Rogers would simply be a 3 pt shooter and vet presence and they still have what appears to be a solid young mature back up PG/SG in Mack. That would be a pretty nice blend at the PG and SG.
We can't call it a tank until we see what they do with Nick and see if they add a center. Not adding either would be a pure tank. Adding a center and no Nick would be a moderate tank.
So for those who think tanking another year is the right path, get out your rabbits feet.

I don't think this move indicates anything, really. This is just a minimum signing to start filling out the end of roster.

Solid move by the Wizards IMO. Just like Rashard Lewis, Roger Mason is a good guy to have around young players.
Mason can be a backup at either G position. Eddie Jordan used Roger Mason behind Antonio Daniels at PG the season the Wizards made the playoffs (almost all the season) without Gilbert.
Other reasons to add him: Mason is a very smart guy who is respected around the league. He is there as a mentor more than anything else. He knows his role and will accept it, unlike some other veteran backup Gs the Wizards might have added. I believe RMJ will be a voice of reason and good practice player. He is from the area. Knows the Wizards organization from previous experience.

That playoffs, when the Wizards stomped the Cavs 108-72, Mason had a great game. At the vet minimum for one year, I don't see any real downside to that signing.

At the vet minimum for one year, I don't see any real downside to that signing.

no real downside there barring an opportunity cost (who else might
we have been able to sign to a similar deal?) that no one that I'm
aware of has identified.
