KEY MATCHUP

Wall vs Lin

Lin is red hot and is looking like the Knicks savior right now while Wall is coming off one of his best games in the season. Both teams styles will fit into these guys hands for this game. Lin is running there system great but Wall is a different type of monster if he's on his game. Should be a great battle.

Game Preview

Thanks to tremendous back-to-back efforts, relatively unknown Jeremy Lin has come out of nowhere to make quite a name for himself around the NBA.

With Carmelo Anthony sidelined due to injury and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Amar'e Stoudemire, the New York Knicks are counting on Lin to lead the way for the time being.

Looking to post three straight victories for the first time in almost a month, visiting New York tries to extend its winning streak over the Washington Wizards to eight Wednesday night.

After seeing limited minutes in nine of the first 23 games, Lin made the most of his first significant opportunity -- scoring what was then a career-high 25 points in leading New York (10-15) to Saturday's 99-92 win over New Jersey.

"I was afraid to do anything, we're already in a little bit of a crisis and I just can't be, you know, pulling straws, just trying something, a whim," coach Mike D'Antoni said.

"Other players would be looking at me like 'You crazy?' if it didn't work. Now he just kept showing stuff a little bit, a little bit. When he got one opportunity, he took advantage of it."

The Harvard product came out with an even more impressive performance in his first career start, recording 28 points and eight assists during Monday's 99-88 win over Utah.

"The excitement he has caused in the Garden, man, I hadn't seen that in a long time," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "The way he can penetrate, and can get in that lane, and either shoot it or dish it, has really made them a better basketball team.

"When you get a spark a like this, especially in a season like this, this could carry them for a long time because they needed something to happen positive."

While the hype surrounding Lin -- the first American-born NBA player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent -- continues to grow, keeping things going could prove difficult without Anthony and Stoudemire.

Leading New York with 22.3 points per game, Anthony suffered a strained right groin versus the Jazz and is expected to sit out for at least a week. Stoudemire will miss at least a second straight game as he continues to mourn the death of his brother.

The Knicks have taken 11 of 13 meetings with the Wizards (5-20), including seven in a row by an average of 10.5 points. New York won 99-96 in the nation's capital Jan. 6 behind 37 points from Anthony and 23 from Stoudemire.

Washington also carries a bit of momentum into this matchup after snapping a four-game skid with Monday's 111-108 overtime win over Toronto. The Wizards blew an 18-point lead with 3:02 to play in the third quarter but regrouped in OT, holding the Raptors to three points.

"I'm not disappointed -- not for this team," coach Randy Wittman said. "If this is another team, and we're 20-5, we should be. We're taking steps here. I'm not disappointed. I can't be disappointed. We got a win. This team needed a win -- both mentally and physically.

"These young kids have to learn to play in the fourth quarter when it becomes hectic."

In addition to a combined 60 points from John Wall and Nick Young, power forward Trevor Booker also came up big, scoring a season-high 19 while adding three blocks and three steals.

Averaging 85.8 points during a four-game road skid, New York hasn't won three in a row since a season-best four-game run Jan. 6-11.

Washington last won back-to-back games April 9-11.

Predection

Amare's brother passed away yesterday (R.I.P.) so everyone thinks he will miss his 2nd straight game, espically against a bad Wiz team while Melo is out 1-2 weeks with a bad ankle. That lineup they possess doesnt have many scorers. There D will be better with those 2 out but its still going to be average at best with that system. We're at home and they havent been consistent all year. We're bad and we suck after wins.

This game is also on NBA TV where we suck now (oh for the days that Gil use to average 40 on that channel). I think Wall will be confident, he will want this matchup, Shard shuold be on the bench even if he's back, and McGee could easily bust out of his slump against a team he ususally has great success again. You never know with our team but if we cant get a winning streak in this game then there is no hope for us.

Crank up the defensive pressure on them with no scorers and we should be out & running all game. Wiz win 104-89

All I know is I will DVR this game and make sure to watch closely.

Wall has to remember going against Lin. Lin is coming off back to back 20pt games. Now Wall has the chance for pay back. At the same time, Lin already plays with swagger. He is not scared of Wall but could he be over confident?

The other match ups highly favor the Wizards. However, the Knicks beat the full strength Utah Jazz by playing very fundamental, team basketball. New York's players took quite a few charges. Jeremy Lin ran pick and roll or pick and pop with Jeffries. Jared made shots and got to the line. Shocker that can't happen twice. Can it? The Knicks got a ton of open looks from three off Lin's penetration. Steve Novak is deadly from outside, even better than Kleiza if you leave him open.

Exciting matchup, but one I think the Wizards flat dominate inside. I think Lin won't have three great games in a row. (But I have him in fantasy and hope he does. :) )

i think the Wizards get a win streak going. The offense will be on full display. I will say Wizards win, 108-82. New York's bench is shaky.

I think Wall is going to take ALL of Lin's cookies tomorrow night. With McGee at C, the lane is shut off and Wall can press Lin close like white on rice.

I made an oversight in my earlier post.

The matchup at C of Javale McGee vs Tyson Chandler might not be pretty.

If Lin gets his lobs inside off of pick and roll down Chandler could have a big game. There is a pretty good chance Kevin Seraphin will see a lot of action. I hope Javale plays well, but I was wrong to say Washington has a huge advantage inside. They will be missing Amare and Melo, but Chandler has a big advantage at C.

well in the 1st game the Knicks fans felt like McGee kinda outplayed him even if the stats dont say so and some of them were even saying that they would rather have McGee at the time.

Tyson is going to kill the McGee of late but if the guy who was playing before that shows up then he should be fine and he ususally plays well against the Knicks

I don't know about you guys but I just want us to go on a nice 15 game winning streak to get to .500. I know the chances are 1 in a million and it would set back our lottery chances, but I don't care. I just hate cheering every game for a team that I know is going to lose. I feel happier when we win. That is all. Go Wizards! :D

The rust of the lockout/sophmore slump is finally leaving Johns game, I expect him to have a great night against this defense. I also expect to see Shumpert guarding Wall after he dominates Lin which will be an interesting match up.

Jeremy Lin is currently sleeping on his brother's couch.

I fully admit to rooting for the kid. I hope he makes it.

you old enough to remember Pearl vs Clyde? Gus vs Debush?
Wes vs Reed?

to a 12 year old Balt sports fan in 1969, NY can never be rooted for.

ps - could one of you stat hounds point me to a good compare/contrast
page that I can print out and take to the game tonight for the season tix
holder sitting next to me who still really likes Nick. I used to be forgiving
of his lack of non-scoring production but not so much anymore. Would
appreciate a SG ranking that shows just how poor his complete game is.

Here ya go:

Code: Select all

PER 40  NY      Avg.SG  RANK
MIN     30.7    24.8    11
PTS     22.6    15.9    5
FG      8.1     5.8     5
FGA     19.7    13.8    5
3FG     2.1     1.7     18
3FA     5.5     4.7     19
FT      4.3     2.6     7
FTA     5.0     3.2     8
REB     3.3     4.4     46
AST     1.6     3.0     40
STL     0.9     1.3     42
BLK     0.4     0.4     26
TOV     1.7     2.2     17
USG     26.2    20.0    7
TS%     .517    .524    27

Stats are per 40 minutes for shooting guards who have appeared in at least 10 games this season and average at least 10 minutes per game. He's right about where you'd expect him to be in per minute scoring given how much he shoots. He's 5th in scoring among this group, and 5th in FGA and FGM. His usage is high (7th), turnovers on the low side, shooting a shade below average.

But, among the 52 players in this group, Young ranks 46th in per minute rebounding, 40th in assists, 42nd in steals. He's average in shot blocking.

To Young's rebounding in perspective: he gets 3.3 per 40 minutes -- Jordan Crawford gets 4.0, Boobie Gibson get 4.3, Willie Green gets 3.8.

Try this one

Code: Select all

Stat                           ON     OFF    Net
Minutes                       611     348    63%
Offense: Pts per 100 Poss.   95.2    95.4   -0.2
Defense: Pts per 100 Poss.  103.7   112.3   -8.7
Net Points per 100 Poss.     -8.4   -16.9   +8.5

Young still dominates all major-minute players in on/off differential. The D is embarrassing when he isn't on the floor. He also leads the team in scoring while posting the highest TS% of anybody averaging at least 5 shots a game. He's second only to Booker in ORtg. And he's third in WS/48.

Maybe your fellow season ticket holder has a point.
