Moving to DC for the summer! Help!

So I got offered a job out in DC for the summer and after accepting it, realized I live about 1,000 miles away from there and have no idea where I'm going to live.

Being the only people I know who live in that general area, I figured I'd ask if anyone knows anywhere I could live for 3 months for a relatively low price? Keep in mind that I'm already a poor college student and I'm not getting paid to go out there at all.

Thanks!

In your situation affording a place of your own isn't realistic. DC and cheap don't go together. I would say your best bet is to share a house or condo. Check the Washington Post classifieds for roomate ads.

are you seriously not getting ANY money from your internship? does your program provide any sort of help in finding housing? you can find cheap housing in local schools renting out dorm rooms for summer sessions. GWU comes to mind.

Rent a room in a house. It's your best (only?) bet to find something close to affordable.

I was thinking my only option would be to rent a room in a house. Anybody have a spare room I can have for the summer?

Also, I do have relatives in 'the area'- It would be about an hour commute each day. Opinions?

If you can get a room with relatives go for it.

I am curious about something though. You are a young guy living 1,000 miles away, what possessed you to follow the Wizards lol?

Hour commute each direction -- meaning 2 hours a day? Or 30 minutes each way? An hour a day isn't much of a commute in DC.

If you can stay with relatives for free, that sounds good. If you can stand them. :)

You will arrive just in time for metrorail's latest round of fare hikes. :D

My dad grew up in the 70's when they were actually good and one of the only teams on TV.... and then he brainwashed me as a child. So much so that when my mom bought a Michael Jordan shirt when I was a baby, he toot it back.

As for the commute- it's an hour both ways. As in 2 hours a day.

I have an old friend down on his luck. I rented him an apartment in Vienna for 500 a month.....utilities included.

All depends the level of neighborhood you can withstand. Check Craigslist, there are a lot of cheap rentals right now. Even in DC itself.

Another option is airbnb.com. They have people who rent rooms by the month, and negotiate.

I am a leasing agent at an apartment community (WRIT). Inbox me if you need housing. Our properties offer flexible lease terms of 3-15 months.

Do you know what happened to Michael Jordan back in the day when he tried to dunk on the Bullets?

I used AirBNB last summer for a trip to Atlanta. Split decision. The arrival was a nightmare. The host was out of town and left it to her brother to clean and set up the apartment. He locked the ONLY key available in the apartment, then just left. The lady was extremely apologetic, but her brother didn't give a crap. We ended up getting a hotel for a couple nights.

Split decision, though, because another airbnb host offered her place, and it was fantastic. Exactly what we needed, and she lowered her price so we wouldn't have to pay anything extra for her place (which was better).

BUMP

Quick Update: Found a place to live! It's expensive but a short walk to work in the Capitol Hill area. I'll be there throughout the summer.

I'm sure there's a lot, but any thoughts on where to go, what to see, where to eat etc. Maybe places where I might run in to some RealGMers? Also, warnings on where not to go and what not to do would be helpful.

Thanks!

DC has one of the best public museum systems in the world, and it's free, supported by your tax dollars. If you have the slightest interest, you should get some return on that investment and use some or all of them: all the Smithsonians, Air and Space Museum, Freer, National Gallery, etc. One of them is right across the street from Verizon Center.
