Interesting Perry Jones Article

Such an interesting player, I've been arguing for a while that he's a beta, not a bad guy or a jerk, or a no motor guy, but a guy with other priorities, and who basically has a beta temperment, he's essentially "too nice".....this seems to bear that out, although it also suggests hope that he could turn the corner as he matures and perhaps develop a papa bear personality. I like him a lot, i just wish I could see how much love for the game is in him, and how much passion to win is in him. Can't really tell. Oddly, he seems to have his priorities straight, but remains a bit of an enigma.

hmmm, finally finished it, he's an interesting character, with everything he's been through, i remain intrigued by his psychology and I believe it is definitively the key to his development. He, more than any player, needs to land on the right kind of team with the right kind of leadership. He could be a great player, but its still hard to tell if he's passionate about the game, or if he's like Courtney Brown and Michael Westbunk, and simply "just playing it". Life has clearly dealt him and his family a very tough hand, he had tough lessons, and his priorities appear to have always been his siblings and his parents. Not basketball. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and everything right about it. The question now is, can he take his talent, take his situation and determine himself to impose his will on the sport so that by extension, he can most effectively help those around him, or will it simply be a case of nature and environment will out? Not sure. But very intriguing, I'd love love love for him to find his stardom for us, but to be perfectly honest, I dont think it would happen here. Our room is a hell hole and we lack the leadership to help foster his development. He'd be better served landing elsewhere although the lottery doesn't appear to have any teams that really fit him well. Maybe Cleveland, or New Orleans, or New Jersey if they kept Williams and got Howard.

"......"My heart goes out to him," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "He gets judged on his potential instead of where he is now. If he wanted to be judged like an NBA player, he'd be in the NBA."

Instead, at least for a few more months, Jones remains in Waco. The 20-year-old cartoon fanatic who loves to play paintball returned for his sophomore season because he realized he lacked maturity. Before turning pro, Jones said he "wanted to become a man."

The past month has certainly been a test.

Jones is averaging 13.2 points and 7.3 rebounds for the 25-5 Bears. But he's scored just 5.3 points per game and shot 27 percent from the field in Baylor's past four losses, three of which came against top-10 teams.

Jones tries to stay upbeat, but it's difficult. When Baylor loses, he said the criticism "goes through the roof" on Twitter -- the bathroom walls of the Internet. "I can't get on there without hearing about how soft I am," Jones said.
Two weeks ago, when Jones tweeted about his excitement over earning a B on an English paper, a "fan" responded that he should quit worrying about his grades and get back in the gym.

Less than a year removed from braces and acne medicine, Jones shakes his head. Last season he said he would've responded to such a comment.

"But now I'm more mature," Jones said. "I realize I don't even know who these people are. "And they definitely don't know anything about me...."
That's what frustrates Jones' inner circle. Everyone thinks they know PJ3, as he's called by his friends, but the perceptions are far from true. The people who believe he was getting money from Baylor during high school might feel differently if they knew Jones was homeless -- bouncing from one $95-a-week hotel room to another -- throughout much of his final prep season.

Good for the kid. Smart move staying in school and out of the microscope he would be under if he came out last year. Maybe he should stay the course and stay there another year.

Barnes also did the right thing and I hear MKG is thinking about staying in though his coach will try to talk him out of it.

It is good to see these kids starting to realize that coming out early isnt the answer to everything without evaluating who they are and what they want out of life. People do need time to grow up and you cant go back and experience that college experience once you leave.

Sure, everything is a risk. You could get hurt but most players recover from injury. If they are good, they will still make it in the NBA and they will still make millions. 3 years in school is probably the right length for most players. Then they can always get their degree later because 1 year isn't much to finish.

It had to be absolute agony making that decision knowing the condition his mom's in though. Agony.

He seems like a good guy but he is a pretty big underachiever as a player. If you are any kind of competitor and the guy guarding you is inferior to you ..... abuse him. If people are calling you soft then the natural reaction for a competitor is to take it out on the opponents.

He should be dominating and he isn't. That is a big red flag.
